An Update from Digidesign on Pro Tools LE + Leopard compatibility March 4, 2008

This article is outdated, Pro Tools is now compatible with Leopard.  For the latest info, click this link.

I know we have made a lot of posts on this.. but we have another update from Digidesign.  This time its a slightly apologetic message on the front page of Digidesign.com.

Digidesign says that they are working hard to get Pro Tools LE compatible with Leopard, and that they are sorry for our frustration.  It is nice to see that they acknowledge that this is a big deal for Pro Tools LE, and that many users are really starting to get antsy.

Get ready to wait a little longer for Pro Tools and Leopard compatibility… March 3, 2008

When will Pro Tools LE be compatible with Leopard?

Well, we’ve been waiting since October… and it looks like we will be waiting until April.

Both Digidesign and a few of the big pro audio retailers are hinting that Pro Tools LE will not be compatible with (the latest version of) Leopard until April or later.

Transferring between different DAWs without OMF/AAF March 2, 2008

Click HERE to see our video on how to export OMF interchange and AAF files from Logic Pro.  I also cover how to import OMF and AAF files, as well as how to export all tracks as audio files (which you can use to import into Pro Tools LE).  A great video on transferring between DAWs.

Many times, a project will travel from studio to studio during production. Each studio might be running a different DAW, with a different interface and computer. While exporting a project as an OMF or AAF and then importing to another DAW is sometimes possible, a few DAWs don’t allow this (::ahem:: Pro Tools LE….) So, its a good idea to know how to transfer the audio files without the use of OMF or other “universal” file formats. (more…)

Problem with Firewire, Audio on new MacBook and MacBook ProI March 2, 2008

12-13-08:UPDATE

Haven’t heard much about this problem in a while–I think things are pretty much sorted out. If anyone has other info, please add a comment. [Damon]

[ORIGINAL POST] Be very careful if you are in the market for a new MacBook or MacBook Pro to use for audio production. It seems one of the chipsets Apple is (was?) using (Agere) is not compatible with audio functionality from anybody(!) MOTU, Presonus, RME, Windows, Mac–nothing. There is apparently a “workaround” but it doesn’t seem to be possible for all users. If you were thinking about pulling the trigger on a new macbook, make sure to find out if the unit you are looking at has this hardware–it could save you a big headache.

Apple – Support – Discussions – New Agere firewire chip …

The recent firewire audio interface issues on the new iMac are now a problem on the new MBPs. According to RME this is due to the Agere fw chip used on those machines which causes a firewire bus reset when starting playback in isochronous mode. The problem also manifests on Motu and other devices.

Digidesign releases 7.4cs3 for Pro Tools LE March 1, 2008

Well, we did not get the big announcement from Digidesign that Pro Tools now works on Leopard.

But, we did get something. And Digidesign did not announce this, rather, I just found it on their updates page. Obviously I doubt this is the “big fix”, as they would have told us… but it confuses me why Digidesign would release a small bug fix update when they are “on the verge” of making the giant Leopard release.

Digidesign has released Pro Tools 7.4cs3 (customer service pack 3). Supposedly this fixes some problems that 003 users were having with pops and clicks when monitoring all inputs, as well as a few other small bugs (with automation thinning and others). I am going to install this today and I will post my results.

Composition: MIDI Makes the Difference March 1, 2008

Composers have always pursued talented musicians in the hopes of convincing them to perform new pieces of music. The main challenge is communicating some sense of our musical ideas in a way that will let the performer know what we are all about–that is, we try to answer the questions in advance: “So, what is your music like?” “In what style do you write?”

The real question behind these polite, superficial questions is, “Will I, as a performer, find it rewarding to spend the time necessary to learn and perform your new piece?”

This is a really good question. If your art form is painting or sculpture, then you can produce new works on your own, fully formed, without ever really relying on the (more…)
