Book Review: Sound Reinforcement Handbook November 9, 2009
Posted by ConnorSmith in : General Announcements, Project Studio, Troubleshooting , add a commentIn my opinion, this book is a must-buy for any audio engineer, whether you are in live sound, studio recording, etc. This book is also known by names like “The Yamaha Book” (and similar names), as this was originally written for Yamaha.
What? A technical book written in 1987 (last updated in 1990) is a necessity??
Answer – yes! This book is chock full o’ great information. Although it is technically (more…)
Help me help you! April 13, 2009
Posted by ConnorSmith in : Computers, General Announcements , 81commentsI’ve been getting a lot of emails lately on computer problems/DAWs crashing/etc. Please keep them coming, I’m glad to see systems are working the bugs out (plus it helps me document trends and figure out problems with patches/gear).
We’ve been able to solve a high percentage of problems, but often it takes 2-3 emails back and forth before we have all the information available to help.
If you are emailing us (or even posting in the comments) about a problem you are having, please include the following information, as it will make it possible to help you:
- Computer OS (which version of windows, leopard, tiger, etc.)
- Computer specs (processors, RAM, HDDs, firewire cards, etc.) – if its a Mac, let me know if its a Mac Pro, MacBook, iMac, etc
- Which DAW and what version (i.e. say “Pro Tools 8.0cs2″ not just “Pro Tools”)
- What interface you are using
- What plug-ins/VIs do you have installed

Human Hearing Physiology November 21, 2008
Posted by ConnorSmith in : Acoustics, General Announcements , add a commentOk, I know.
This academic stuff is a tough sell.
But! As boring as this stuff can be, its really important. I’m going to breakdown the complicated human hearing system into three parts to give you a basic understanding of what’s going on. I’m writing this article as sort of a preface to some upcoming posts (about things like safe listening levels and how to protect your hearing). Honestly, if you are working in audio, you should have a basic understanding of your own hearing system. (more…)

Posted by ConnorSmith in : Chit Chat, General Announcements, Troubleshooting , 1 comment so farHi all,
First off, thanks a bunch for all the great discussions and input (and the traffic) you’ve given The Studio Files. This community doesn’t happen without everyone’s contributions.
I’ve been getting a lot of emails lately, and I find that often I need to send 1-2 back and forth before actually getting to the “help” part. We like to answer everyone’s questions and fix as many problems as we possibly can to get us all making music as fast as humanly possible. Here are some things you can include in your questions that will help for an even faster response (and hopefully a solution!). : (more…)

Sending Large Files over the Internet March 17, 2008
Posted by ConnorSmith in : Computers, General Announcements, Studio Setup , 2commentsPJ’s post gave me the idea to share my experience with sending large files of the internet (Thank’s PJ!). If you need to send session files, wavs, other sound files, omf interchange files, etc… over the internet, its unlikely your email provider will let you attach such large files (plus you will clog the receiver’s inbox). Here are the two ways I like to send files. (more…)
Celemony previews Direct Note Access March 13, 2008
Posted by ConnorSmith in : General Announcements, Studio Setup, plugins (plug-ins) , 4commentsWow. Everyone should watch the video link I have posted at the end of this article.
Celemony’s Melodyne plug-in has helped define pitch correction in recent years, but only for monophonic sources. The new Direct Note Access technology lets you manipulate audio from polyphonic sources. Yes, you heard right. Polyphonic audio. Guitar tracks, piano tracks, string quartets, you name it. Where Pro Tools made it possible to edit the timing of audio like MIDI (with the very powerful Elastic Audio), Celemony lets you dissect audio’s pitch like MIDI through Direct Note Access. (more…)
