Get ready to wait a little longer for Pro Tools and Leopard compatibility… March 3, 2008

When will Pro Tools LE be compatible with Leopard?

Well, we’ve been waiting since October… and it looks like we will be waiting until April.

Both Digidesign and a few of the big pro audio retailers are hinting that Pro Tools LE will not be compatible with (the latest version of) Leopard until April or later.

Although Digidesign is very limited in what they are allowed to say regarding the compatibility issues, it seems as though the DAE just cannot be written to be fully compatible with the current (10.5.2) version of Leopard. Apparently, it’s possible that once Apple releases 10.5.3, then Digidesign will be able to get the ball rolling.

This is bad news for project studios running LE as their main DAW. Now, obviously Digidesign wants to get this release out as SOON as possible, but its just not happening quick enough for many of us.

Personally, I think Digidesign is really at a crossroad here. Pro Tools was engineered for hardware-based DAW (dsp cards, etc). The “native” scene (especially considering the power of current computers) is relatively new. LE (in its original design), I believe was not intended to be used as a professional, full-featured DAW. Now LE has to compete with many other powerful native DAWs, whose base features tend to outshine LE on paper and in many cases, in practice. Digidesign representatives have suggested that the company is fully aware of this situation, and that LE will begin to develop more fully the native application and its feature set in the future. But, this requires some major re-writes and workarounds (as Pro Tools is almost 20 years old, and has an unbelievable number of lines of code…).

I love Pro Tools, and will continue to use it (alongside other DAWs). But I really hope (for Digidesign’s sake) that they can get LE up to speed with Leopard, and in the future, begin to transition LE towards becoming a more powerful native application. For now, anyone trying to run PT LE on Leopard should try 7.4cs2 (or cs3) on Mac OS 10.5.1.
