In this video from The Studio Files .com, I am going to show you how to make and use instrument tracks in Pro Tools LE. Make a new track by hitting Shift+Apple+N (or go t the track menu). I know that I am going to load up Xpand on this channel, so let’s rename this to Xpand by double clicking on the name. The output should be fine at 1-2, but I need to set it to a bus (I have background routing going on so that you guys can hear my output). Now up in the inserts, we can put in a new multichannel instrument, Xpand. If you record enable this instrument and play on your MIDI keyboard, you are going to get sound. Now Xpand is really cool (we’ll have a more in depth video on Xpand later), since there are 4 banks, you can layer sounds together. Let’s layer is with a clavinet (and play the MIDI keyboard). Another way to access sounds is, rather than just using the instrument tracks alone, is to make some accompanying MIDI tracks to target them with. The bonus of doing this is that if you have an instrument that can accept multiple MIDI inputs, this is the way to use that feature. Hit Shift+Apple+N to create a new MIDI track. Let’s call it Xpand channel 1. Now for the MIDI track’s output, choose Xpand channel 1. Now if you had an instrument that could accept multiple inputs (such as structure, strike, etc…) this is where you can choose. If you record enable that, notice that sound is triggered from our instrument track when we play this MIDI track. And that is an intro on how to make and use instrument tracks in Pro Tools LE.
