Your Man about Town here, bringing you more from the studio world. We are continuing our sweep of the mid-west with a stop in Dayton, OH. We had a chance to sit down with Bill Sellers, owner of Encore Studios. Bill has been cranking out projects for clients all over the country, ranging from rock, classical, and jazz, to voice overs, jingles, and promotional videos. Bill gave us a tour of his space and showed us his gear. We also got to chat about some of the projects he has done over the years and what he is currently working on. Awesome music, cool studio, and a lot of great stories.

Hi . I have pro tools LE 7.3.1 console style 80% of waves plug ins and their extra. v series, ssl, L3 -16 etc. this is the thing. i want to do a single cd as no problem but i have a friend who has a producer and i have been talking about my project. i have a small studio but the producer want to go into a large studio. Well i agree. but before i do which will lead into thousands extra. i was wondering the real truth or real guess. If the song is going to get mastered at a mastering studio can a pro tools le recording sound close to a recording which has been done in a million dollar studio. i know the difference. but is able to be done with good ears to pull it off. as some times in the larger studios if a person is not a star they may get a lesser experienced tech which may not get that super mix etc. compared to someone who knows their pro tools and has their own little studio which is at no cost for unlimited hours.how good can an le sound when sending the mix out to get pro mastered. i just have this little thing in me which i know pro tools is not the brightest sounding just a bit flat as i feel but i am out to really do a single for radio as i have the connection but its a matter of thousands different, can a le pull it off?

Good questions (and a lot of them!)
The short answer is, and maybe I’ve just been listening to too much politics lately, it depends…
There have been SCORES of radio hits in the last few years that started out as Pro Tools / project studio productions. Most of them would have been finished in a big studio though, especially mastering.
A person doesn’t really know how great ANY daw software (PT included) will sound until you hear it recording an amazing talent through a $15,000 signal path. That being said, you can get within shouting distance of that kind of sound with MUCH cheaper gear, if your ears are on and you know what to listen for and how to use your gear. Finding a great small studio guru is golden for just that reason.
You are right to be cautious about throwing down big bucks for studio time–you might just be paying a lot to sit in an expensive chair while an intern screws up your tracks. Know the sound you want. Research the mics that will be right. Ask about preamps and processing before you go and ask for a sample of the work of the engineer that is going to be working your session. A pre-production consult could save you lots of time when the clock is ticking.
