Apple Releases Leopard 10.5.2 February 11, 2008

A much-awaited release from Apple finally came out today. The 10.5.2 Leopard update fixes TONS of bugs and errors that existed in 10.5.1
There are fixes in many applications (including iCal, Time Machine, Mail, etc) as well as bug fixes and visual improvements to the OS overall. But… [drum roll please] it supposedly also provides fixes for problems in Core Audio. !Ding Ding Ding! So, all the pro audio people are getting excited. Perhaps soon, updated versions of Pro Tools (and other DAWs) will become available. Supposedly many DAW manufacturers, including Digidesign, were waiting until 10.5.2 to release their updates. Be sure to Time Machine before installing big updates like this!

NOTICE: Pro Tools HD is now compatible with 10.5.1, so hopefully Pro Tools LE will be as well. But, I would suggest that Pro Tools LE users NOT upgrade to 10.5.2 yet. This is not only in case Digidesign only approves LE for 10.5.1 (which they probably will not), but mainly because users are reporting additional problems with 10.5.2. If you have everything working on 10.5.1, do not upgrade. If you did upgrade, hopefully you have a Time Machine backup, or you could just reinstall.

Thanks for this message about Digidesign and Leopard. I have a new MBP without Tiger but only Leopard. I do have a 003 rack with Pro Tools 7.4.
I also use Logic Studio (most of the time).
Do you think I can use the stand-alone driver of Core Audio with the 003 Rack on Leopard, for use in Logic Studio? I really hope Digidesign is coming with an update very soon. I find it unbelievable that when there are so much people using an Apple with Pro Tools, they didn’t have an update ready with the release of Leopard.

Well, I’ve had some luck with my 003R with CoreAudio and Logic. Actually, yesterday I did some demos for thestudiofiles.com theme in Logic with no problems. I am using Leopard (10.5.1) on a Mac Pro, I haven’t upgraded to 10.5.2 yet. I am going to wait until some other people do it first to see how it works.
But, to get Logic to play nice with your 003R hardware, it should be fairly headache-free. Here’s what I did. Just install Pro Tools (which it seem you already have). It will install the Digidesign CoreAudio program. Then I installed Logic 8. Now, hopefully its this easy for you, but just make sure no other “CoreAudio” programs (iTunes etc.) are running. Launch Logic, and it will automatically launch the Digi CoreAudio Manager. That should be it! Post back in the comments here if you have problems, and we can get it solved.
As far as Digi taking forever with the update… Digidesign has a history of actually physically testing EVERYTHING before they release updates. They test it themselves so they can actually approve and recommend hardware. So, this alone takes a lot of time. Another factor is that Leopard is very very buggy (especially with CoreAudio errors). I have communicated Digidesign a few times myself, and from what I understand, they have just been waiting on Apple to update Leopard. I guess they had no reason to make Pro Tools compatible with a buggy CoreAudio system…
So, it should all be resolved soon. Pro Tools HD is now compatible with 10.5.1 (although I think only for the new 8-core computers). Hopefully LE is next!

Personally, I would wait.
If 10.5.1 is working with LE 7.4 for you, I wouldn’t risk messing things up. If you really want to try it, make sure you have a Time Machine backup ready to go.
Digidesign obviously very much wants to get LE up to speed.

I’m interested in what everyone has to say and here’s my tupence worth: My Powerbook died so I got a spanking new iMac intel dual blah blah and they shipped it to me with 10.5.2 on it. At the same time I decided to upgrade from my crappy little mBox (or is it Mbox?) and splash out and get an 003 Factory which came with PT 7.3. As soon as I started the thing up, it and my iMac between them conspired to connect me directly to Digidesign and upgrade the PT to 7.4, and the whole thing works, more or less. A couple of gliches were ironed out with 7.4cs2. BUT…the problems start to happen with the use of other audio and midi programmes running under CoreAudio: sp. Finale running Garritan as a plug-in has gillions of hung notes that never receive a note-off (if it’s midi problem) or a “shut-up” (if it’s an audio problem). It does all come down to drivers at the end of the day…The PT software itself seems to run fine.
Yep^^ the coreaudio drivers are buggy… gah.
Unfortunately (and I don’t know why specifically), but I always hear that iMac users are having it the worst. I run a MacPro with Leopard, and other than some glitchy pro tools things and the occassional kernel panic in Coreaudio, I’ve had a fine setup.
Hopefully the update will be out soon… although Digidesign has said it will be 1-2 months, I’ve heard that that may be a slightly long estimate, just to cover their tracks in case some major problems arise.
Do you have anyway of downgrading to 10.5.1? Most people say that 10.5.1 works a lot better than 10.5.2 in this situation (do you know anyone with an install disc?)
