Digidesign Core Audio Leopard Problems (Logic too) February 17, 2008

Posted by ConnorSmith in : Digidesign, Leopard, Pro Tools , trackback

If you are one of the many people who need Digidesign and Leopard to “play nice”, this is a quick note that may help you. If you cannot get Pro Tools to open or are having problems with Logic Studio 8 crashing on startup, read on!

If Logic or Pro Tools is crashing, it could very well be a problem with a ReWire plug-in (Reason, Melodyne, etc.)

Navigate to Library > Application Support > Propellerhead Software > ReWire and delete files ending in “.plugin” that contain the word “ReWire”. If this doesn’t fix the problem, you may have to delete the other files in that folder as well. Note to Melodyne users, supposedly this problem is solved for you with updates which you can check out here. Read The Studio Files’ other articles on compatibility to try to get your Digidesign hardware/software working.

EDIT: Pro Tools 7.4.2 is qualified to work with Leopard 10.5.4, and Pro Tools 8 is qualified on Leopard 10.5.5.

[...] Digidesign and Logic Core Audio Problems in Leopard [...]

2. Daniel Plomp - March 9, 2008

Hi, I tried to install ProTools LE on Leopard 10.5.1 and also on 10.5.2. Both no luck. I’m using an Intel Imac.

Strange thing is that when I install it on my Macbook Pro, it works okay?!? Now I’ve update my Macbook Pro to 10.5.2 and I can run Pro Tools and Logic Studio without any problems. (using a 003 Rack)

What could be the reason that it isn’t working on my IMac? Anyone knows about this problem?

3. ConnorSmith - March 9, 2008

Hi Daniel, I have a few questions for you (which should help us figure out your problem):

What version (including cs packs) of Pro Tools are you using? Sometimes this can make a difference.

Also, with your Intel Mac, was it originally a Leopard computer, or did you just upgrade to Leopard from Tiger?

Also, when Pro Tools won’t work on your Imac, what exactly is the problem? (Does it fail to load, and if so, at what plug-in? Is it just buggy/glitchy etc..)

Let me know, we can hopefully get things working for you.

4. Daniel Plomp - March 10, 2008

Hi Connor,

Thanks for your reply.
About the questions:

- Pro Tools LE 7.4 CS3
- It was originally a Leopard computer
- It says it doesn’t find the hardware or sometimes it says the hardware is already in use.

Strange thing is that I have had it working a few weeks ago. I installed PT on my Imac just to see if I could use my 003 to play some iTunes songs. So I only needed the Digi driver, but I installed ProTools. That time I had upgraded Leopard to 10.5.1 and used Pro Tools LE 7.4 CS2.

I installed my iMac yesterday with that same config (PT LE 7.4 CS2 & Leopard 10.5.1), but no results…

Luckily it works on my Macbook Pro (PT LE 7.4 CS3 & Leopard 10.5.2)

Very strange that hardware is making a difference now, so it seems!?

Any idea’s?

5. ConnorSmith - March 10, 2008

Unfortunately, getting Pro Tools to work on Leopard can sometimes just not happen… Different hardware configurations sometimes keep it from working (and actually, with iMacs, I’ve noticed it the most). You are lucky that you have an additional computer that you can get it working on (most people are just stuck).

Although I doubt it will work, if you get bored one day, you could try just installing 7.4 (with no cs pack). Hopefully Digidesign will have an update soon!

6. Alastair Lindsay - March 16, 2008

I’m so glad i found this tip. I was going mad wondering why i was having Logic not launch, but all my other audio apps were ok. It worked once i deleted the Rewire plugins.

7. ConnorSmith - March 16, 2008

Well, then I am glad you found it too^^

8. Michael Tuminello - March 19, 2008

Hi –

I happened upon your site, and will try what you suggest although I am not sure the problem sounds exactly the same. I get Logic up and running fine with my 002r, but then, in the middle of recording or playing back at some later point, all audio will just stop working. I need to reboot logic to get it running again.

Just wondering if you think it might be the same problem and if not, if you have any other suggestions.

thanks – I have tried looking everywhere else I can think to look without any solution.

9. Damon Sink - March 20, 2008

Michael,

Can you give us OS and software versions? That will help to narrow down the problem.

Thanks. (Connor will probably chime in here too)

Damon

10. Michael Tuminello - March 20, 2008

Latest Logic (8.1, I think?), OS X 10.4.10 (which I know is not technically supported but I rolled back to 10.4.9 and it made no difference, and accidentally let it upgrade later on.) Have tried with PT LE cs5, have currently uninstalled PT LE and installed the standalone Core Audio in the hopes that would help (didn’t). This has also been a problem with other audio apps I have used – Guitar Rig 2 and 3, iTunes, and Garageband.

I could upgrade to Leopard if it would help (I have it, but have not installed on this machine).

Any suggestions appreciated.

11. ConnorSmith - March 20, 2008

Have you ever had power harness problems with your 002R? It can cause the unit to lose communication with the computer fairly regularly. Its a very inexpensive (~$20) and quick (~20 minute) fix.

It also could be firmware stuff, software problems, incompatibilities… etc, but I’m actually about to get on a plane… so I will look into this and give you a more thorough response later!

CKS

12. Michael Tuminello - March 20, 2008

I did actually replace the power harness once (got a new one from sweetwater, which is who I bought the 002r from).

Thanks SO MUCH for helping. If you come up with a solution I’m going to have to fly to Ohio and buy you a drink. Actually Digidesign should buy it for you, but I doubt I’ll have any luck talking them into it.

13. Ashley Best - March 21, 2008

So I was patiently waiting for Digidesign to become compatible with leopard and when I found out it had, I had already updated to 10.5.2. Is there a way of undoing an update? I haven’t tried running my m-box on my macbook on 10.5.2 yet, but I would rather not. Any suggestions?

14. Alex - March 23, 2008

I have 10.5.2 running on my new macbook 2.2 ghz intel and I’m using Pro Tools 7.4 LE with an mbox micro….and no matter what kind of session I’m working on, every few minutes I lose audio and then my keyboard and track pad go dead. Sometimes this will only last 10 seconds, other times it will be for good and I have to restart the computer. Clearly it’s unusable so I’m just leaving it be. Laptop works perfect for everything else. Just wondered if anyone has had this issue and if there was anything thing I could do to fix it? I wish I had 10.5.1 still…..

15. ConnorSmith - March 24, 2008

Michael – hey, I didn’t forget about you, I’m still looking into it. I am out of state right now, but will be back in the studio soon and can help better then.

Ashley and Alex – Did your computers come originally with 10.5 or 10.5.1?

If so, if you use the Leopard install discs that came with them, that will install that (and if its 10.5, then just go to apple’s site and download the 10.5.1 update). Hopefully 10.5.1 will work for you! Let me know if you don’t have those discs, there are some other options (but that’s the easiest way). Just back all your stuff up before you start messing with things.

16. Michael - March 24, 2008

Hi Connor –

That’s very nice of you. I thought for a bit your rewire trick might have done it, but nope…

If there’s even any way to identify whether the problem is for sure hardware or software that would be helpful.

Michael

17. Aidan L - April 2, 2008

Hey, this looks like a useful page to query. I’ve got a digi002 rack which i havnt used for a while as its at home. Ive got an hd3 system running at my studio away from home working fine with a g5 bla bla. The working senario recently has demanded that I have another setup in my main studio in another room. I’ve got my 002r out of hibernation to use in the other room. but as I havnt used it for ages I dont have protools on my laptop to use with it (macbookpro). I downloaded coreaudio (i think osx 10.4-.9) which should enable me to use logic 8 _ which i tend to use these days, with the002r. My computer is not picking up the interface. Is this my 002r or leopard or some software i missed or what? all i want to do is use logic studio 8 with my macbookpro with leopard. please help.

18. ConnorSmith - April 2, 2008

Hi Aiden

People using Leopard with Pro Tools are having varying degrees of success so far (although the update should be out in April or early May). I have PT LE 7.4cs2 running successfully on OS 10.5.1.

I haven’t used just the stand alone coreaudio driver though. I installed Pro Tools from the disc (which in turn installed the coreaudio drivers). Many people are having problems with them though, as the driver isn’t approved for Leopard.

See if you can get the computer to communicate with the interface while running Pro Tools. That’s a good first step, then we can continie to troubleshoot from there.

19. Michael Tuminello - April 2, 2008

hey kinda guessing you all didn’t find out anything, which is cool (since nowhere else I’ve tried has offered any help either). I greatly appreciate your looking. If you do find out anything let me know. glad to hear a date on the PT update anyway. Unless they are moving to using core audio I doubt it will help, but you never know.

thanks

20. ConnorSmith - April 2, 2008

Howdy Michael

You know, I haven’t been able to find a solution, BUT

I have been kinda experiencing a similar problem (but only with Pro Tools). Its seems like when I do random things, the audio cuts out or I lose communication with my 003R… mine’s probably a leopard thing, but interesting.

Could be a hardware problem (?) Sorry, I’m out of guesses… If I was in the room, I may be able to think of a few more things… hmmm…. I’ll keep my thinking cap on.

21. champ22 - April 3, 2008

yep that was it ……the reason …..your the man boss!!!!

22. letmeknow - April 10, 2008

question? When I called Apple Support they said that Pro Tools wasn’t working with leopard because the digi002 hardware is not compatible, so my question is what driver or hardware would be compatible?

23. ConnorSmith - April 10, 2008

Well, Digidesign products are not compatible with Leopard right now at all.

But, what computer/OS version/Pro Tools versions are you using? Its very likely that you can get a working setup, even though it isn’t officially qualified.

24. stanley Spilman - April 12, 2008

Hi
I’m kind of new to this stuff but I was wondering if anyone could help.
Im running osx tiger on a 2gb macbook, with logic express 7.
when i try to record something via line in it states that there is no input in the I/0 box.
I think it has something to do with the core audio interfacing with logic….

cheers

25. Aleksi - April 17, 2008

Hi,

I’ve been reading this thread and it seems to me that you know a lot about these stuff.

My setup is:
- A brand new Macbook 2.4GHz 10.5.2 + Logic 8 Pro
- Echo Audiofire 4
- Bootcamp Windows XP2 + Cubase SX3

OS X side:
Logic seems to be using only one core and after few minutes CPU overloads and displays that “Audio overload 10011″.

I have done about everything, searched the net but there is no solution to get both CPUs up and running and getting the max power outta my fine Macbook.

On the Windows-side: Cubase SX3 just can’t play projects about at any sample rate I use. Normal projects which should play. I figure that this is a problem related to the bootcamp?

I have been disabling all apple products (bluetooth, wireless), but there is no difference. Even tried to install Microsoft patches for Firewire and CPU power consumption. But no, nothing is different.
Hope you can help me.

Thank you for your help in advance!

26. ConnorSmith - April 20, 2008

Aleski –
With all the problems Leopard is having with CoreAudio, its likely that your problem is rooted in that.

I would first try downgrading to 10.5.1, as many people are having more luck with that version of Leopard. See what that does for you on the Mac side.

Was it a fresh erase and install of WinXP?

27. Aleksi - April 21, 2008

Hi,

Thank you for your answer.

I have tried to re-install whole Leopard without any updates and that was the most downgraded I can get. And it didn’t do anything different.

With Windows, I did everything as the installing prochure said. It was formatted (not quick) NTFS (90 Gb) and installed straight XP Pro Sp2.
But the result was this. I even tried different soundcards, no use.

28. ConnorSmith - April 21, 2008

Hmmm… that’s odd.

Yeah, to downgrade Leopard you will need to find an installer disc for 10.5.1…

I am unfamiliar with the Echo unit as well, that could also be causing problems. I would check the manufacturer’s website for hardware/software/OS incompatibilities. I’ll ask around to see if anyone else is having similar problems with different hardware.

29. Tom - April 28, 2008

I tried to install digidesign core_audio_driver on a intel imac with leopard 10.5.2

Unfortunately digidesign and logic audio 8 does not start.

Maybe I damaged something with the driver?

30. Daniel Plomp - April 28, 2008

I had some trouble with running Pro Tools and / or CoreAudio on my iMac (Intel/2.8ghz).

Because I run Pro Tools without any problem on my Macbook Pro with Leopard 10.5.2, it was very frustrating to not getting it to work on my iMac. Even with Tiger installed, Pro Tools said it could not find any hardware etc.

For some dark reason Pro Tools runs okay now and also the CoreAudio driver. (so I can run Logic also). It all runs on Leopard 10.5.2.

The only thing I did was a PRAM reset (CMD-ALT-P-R) and then I swiched to another firewire cable in a different firewire port. Now the iMac could find the 003 hardware!??!
After the PRAM reset it still didn’t work, but when I tried another cable, Pro Tools could suddenly find the 003. I really don’t know why.

Of course, I swiched back to my original firewire cable and the original firewire port on my 003. It still worked. Then I did a shutdown reconnected all the cables and started my iMac. Pro Tools still runs without any problems.

So, you can try this very strange workaround?

Daniel

31. ConnorSmith - April 28, 2008

Tom – try this page http://thestudiofiles.com/?p=49
If that doesn’t work, let us know a little more about your system, and what actually doesn’t start (when it stalls, etc…)

Daniel –
Well, if its working, that’s a good start. iMacs have seem to have had the most problems with this Leopard and Digidesign “situation”. If its working, I would just leave it at that. Was the firewire cable that worked shorter than the one that didn’t work? I do know there was a problem with longer firewire cables with the 003.

32. Tom - April 29, 2008

My System: iMAC 24″, 4 GB RAM, Leopard 10.5.2, Logic 8 and I use M-Box 2 mini via USB…

I guess I damaged the Apple Core Audio Driver… Logic and Protools do not work anymore… Does anybody have an idea how to fix that problem?

Thank you! :-)

33. ConnorSmith - April 29, 2008

Yeah, iMacs seem to have the most problems… I would reinstall the OS, Pro Tools, and Logic. Its probably the simplest way (just back everything up first)

34. Luis Patrón - May 12, 2008

Hi, I have a MacBookPro with OS X 10.5.2 Leopard and have a M-Box that came with my ProTools 6.7. I don’t care about using Pro Tools but I do want to use the M-Box with programs like LIVE and REASON. Could you please advice which drivers I need and where I can get them in order to install my MBOX? Thanks in advanced!

35. Tom - May 13, 2008

Hi, this one worked for me:

Download Version: 7.4

http://www.macmusic.org/software/view.php/lang/en/id/742/

But first you need to remove all previous digidesign installations…

36. Damon Sink - May 13, 2008

Glad that worked for you, Tom.

So since you installed PT 7.4, both Digidesign and Logic are working with the MBox?

37. Tom - May 13, 2008

Logic works fine with m-box and Leopard 10.5.2 with stand alone driver from digidesign.

Attention: Don’t install ProTools 7.4 because it crashes Core Audio in Leopard.

38. Damon Sink - May 13, 2008

That’s what I was afraid of! [Edited--should have asked Connor first. He is not recommending going back to 7.3]

39. Art Hays - May 15, 2008

I don’t know if anyone else had a similar situation, but I had PT LE (002 Control surface) running on Leopard on my new Mac Pro for a week and then it became unusable. It now keeps saying to increase buffer size and that it lost communication with the interface. No audio. Lots of clicks and chatter. Why would this happen after a week of successful operation? Beats me.
I luckily have my old PowerBook G4 that I am using until this storm passes.
Would be interested in hearing any similar situations and/or possible solutions.
thanks!

40. ConnorSmith - May 15, 2008

Maybe try to repair your disk permissions? I havne’t heard of anyone having this problem.

Software update didn’t run by mistake and upgrade you from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2 did it?

Hopefully the update will show up soon…

41. Art Hays - May 16, 2008

hey Connor-

I will look at disk permissions. I actually did update to 10.5.2 though. ooops. read somewhere that it was solving problems. However, the problem arose before I updated.

i’m gettin’ in line for the digi update. and crossing fingers.

great forum! thanks….
-a

42. ConnorSmith - May 16, 2008

Yeah, unfortunately, 10.5.2 was supposed to fix coreaudio problems, when in fact, it hurt a lot more than it helped…. gah….

That line is getting longer and longer by the day. Many people on forums are using the argument of “you guys shouldn’t have upgraded…. you knew it wasn’t compatible….” etc… But what they need to remember is that you can’t run Tiger on any Mac purchased approximately after January.

Oh well… hopefully soon! I think Digidesign is just waiting on 10.5.3 now.

43. Nina - May 19, 2008

Hi!
I just bought a new mac pro 2×2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, MAc OS X 10.5.2 together with logic 8.0.1. I used to be a pro tools LE 7.0 user on my G4 powerbook but after thinking about switching because of the limited midi functions pro tools offers I finally did. So I kept my Digi 002 and am extremly bummed now after spending all this money to find out that my Digi 002 will not connect to my intel based mac! Is there anything I can do to use my new set up?? After spending all this money on the switch I sure won’t go out to by the apogee or RME interface! I would really appreciate any help I could get on this!
Thank you, Nina

44. ConnorSmith - May 19, 2008

Have you tried it out yet? What is happening (is coreaudio just not seeing it, not syncing, etc..)? There may be some things you can do to get it working.

Digidesign has tentatively suggested that the leopard-compatible pro tools (as well as the stand alone core audio driver) will be ready by the end of May. At worst, you should only have to wait around 2 weeks or so.

45. Nina - May 19, 2008

Thank you so much for your response!
Digidesign CoreAudio Manager says Status: Not Connected (HW in use) and it will not allow me to connect.

End of May wouldn’t be so bad after all……eventhough I am really impatient! I just heard a joke regarding my relationship: Someone prayed, God give me patience and please give it to me right now!!

Is there anything else I could try?

Thank you so much, Nina

46. ConnorSmith - May 19, 2008

That’s a problem that people with certain configurations are having.

You may have better luck on Leopard 10.5.1, but I can’t guarantee that.

47. Luis Patrón - May 25, 2008

Hi, I have a MacBook Pro running LEOPARD MAC OS X 10.5.2 Intel core 2 duo and I have created a partition to install Windows XP where I have installed LIVE 7 and other music software I want to use through Windows XP and an M-BOX I have.

I have problems trying to install the drivers of the M-BOX in order to use it form my Windows XP partition (this is where I’ll be running my music programs from, not on the MAC partition).
My problem is I don’t know which drivers to install…Should I install the ASIO Drivers on the Windows hard drive or should I install the CoreAudio driver on the MAC partition?

Thanks for ur help in advanced,

48. Damon Sink - May 25, 2008

Hi Luis,

If you are never going to use the MBox on the mac side, then just install ASIO drivers after booting up in Windows. After that, check for updated drivers from Digidesign and you should be all set.

49. Gelao - May 26, 2008

Hey guys, looks like i need the leopard updatefrom digidesign, but thought id ask anyway,

my 002rack works fine with pro tools on my white macbook with 10.4.11. but have recently bought a Macbook pro 2.2ghz core duo with 10.5.1 installed and pro tools fails to find the 002 on startup.

I get an error saying that hardware is missing or in use by another program. have checked audio prefs but 002 rack is not selected by default. downloaded and installed PT LE 7.1.1 from digidesign site but no change in status. Is this just what leopard and pro tools do?

50. ConnorSmith - May 27, 2008

It works for some people, for other people it doesn’t. It seems to be based on what hardware you are running (and the computer), but I don’t think anyone can really predict how its going to act (since its totally unsupported).

We should be getting news from Digidesign soon here, (they suggested to at least have some better info by the end of this month), but don’t get your hopes up too high… we’ve been waiting since October…

51. Bill - June 23, 2008

I have a 002 digi console board .all was working fine for couple years . now the dock bounces and once and a great while the pro tools logo in the dock moves . i know it has something to do wih the 10.4. 11 .i use an I mac intel based computer. I have had an error come up unable to copy the song due to volume/ this and that etc. this is an error,i ciuld not even get it to copy in my extra hard drive it would not copy the copy after i made changes to the song, in other words it will not replace this copy as it always asked. i now hear that even stepping up to the osx lep is not working what is.

52. Johan / Soundgram Post - July 25, 2008

Hi All,

I’ve been a Logic user for a long time, and finally a place where people know stuff!

1. The rewire fix works (remove those files)
2. Tried to install protools 7.3/7.4 on osx leopard (yes I am a trained music tech expert) but it crashed my system bad.
So my advise, make sure you got the right digidesign download files, and than make a BACKUP pref. time machine.

Than crash your system. (I had to buy a new 1TB drive for timemachine) Have fun!

53. ConnorSmith - August 8, 2008

^^Pro Tools 7.4.2 is qualified to run with Leopard 10.5.3/4

(I know I am a little late on the reply here…)

I have been running it for a bit here now without hiccup.

54. lamme - August 12, 2008

Hi i am a musician/producer connorsmith u seem 2 b very knowledgeable of theris digidesign stuff. ok 1st off i have:
Intel Mac Pro
xeon quad core 2.8ghz processor
2gb RAM
two 250gb sata hard drvies
one 80gb hard drive (3 internal hd in all)

my machine came with os x tiger which i later upgrade to leopard and running windows with bootcamp (clean format and install – not a run over)

my problem is:
(1) i have a digi 002 and protools le 7.1.1, 7.3 and 7.4.2 and NONE of them seem to work on either the leopard or the windows xp sp1, sp2 or sp3. Ttried them all) when i open a project and play it i keep getting error messages about increasing or decreasing the buffer size and it drives me crazy the project which is very light no plugins r assigned to it yet it just has couple of tracks cannot play in full without this message interuption! what is the cause of this and how can i fix it?

(2) ever since i chaned from tiger to leopard my system keeps shutting off on its own and restarts and when it does the fan starts to spin at very HIGH revs which is LOUD and annoying so far the only way to stop it is to turn the AC up very high which sometimes im frezzing my ass of and can hardly focus to work (and yes i did open it to see if it was dusty it wasnt, it was squeeky CLEAN – since its just about a year old and in a properly ventilated area, and all the fans are working perfectly i checked) i also had to take it from under the desk and keep it on top of my table? :O PLZ help i did 3 weeks worth of googling and nothing.
PS. after spending all that money on the equipment i bought (which is how i recieved so many software cds in the first place) paying that fee for consultancy from apple and digidesign is SUICIDAL!!!! @!#%^&*!! they need to cut us some slack@ :[

55. ConnorSmith - August 12, 2008

Well, as far as the Windows side goes, you may have to check on Digidesign’s page as to which service pack is your best bet (I haven’t been in windows for over 1.5 years for audio). My first guess would be to check your startup items and spyware/etc as well, because Windows is notorious for that.

For the Mac side, Pro Tools 7.4.2 is now qualified for Leopard 10.5.3 and 10.5.4. I would do a clean install of Leopard and try to then install the latest version of Pro Tools.

When your fans kick on, do you lose control of your mouse? I had a hardware problem on my machine which turned out to be faulty ram. It caused the fans to turn on full blast and the computer to stall without notice.

Also, just to be sure, boot up from your Leopard install disc holding the C key (<- I think thats the key, check the front of the disc) to run the Apple Hardware Test. Go ahead and spend the time to do the full length test (not the quick one). That should tell you if there are anymore serious underlying problems.

Personally, I would only run Pro Tools on one side of your operating system (so, the Mac side). That will keep your files organized and consistent.

56. lamme - August 12, 2008

Hi much respect 4 ur prompt responce.
as for windows bcuz i had so many problems when i did a fresh install of windows nothing was installed on it but the drivers boot camp and protools and itunes cuz it has quicktime and the pro tools mp3 codec uses quick time. so there was no start up items. even when i went into ms config the only items starting up are the regular system stuff and drivers. i did not connect it to the internet when i format it was just to test the pro tools to see if it would work and if there was any software conflict (surely enough it didnt work so it was not a software conflict – sigh :( )

for the mac i have pro tools 7.1.1, pt 7.3 and the latest PT 7.4.2 which dont seem to give me much problems but my plugins are on the windows side and my nuendo 3.2 is on the windows side which i didnt even bother to install. :(

well my plugins were authorised online for windows seeing that was what i was using b4 $7.899.00 for the waves mercury bundle it went out of my league $$$s ago so if i can get the PT and digi 002 working on the bootcamp windows my woes will be solved.

im gonna try that thing u mentioned about:
Also, just to be sure, boot up from your Leopard install disc holding the C key (<- I think thats the key, check the front of the disc) to run the Apple Hardware Test. Go ahead and spend the time to do the full length test (not the quick one). That should tell you if there are anymore serious underlying problems.
Not sure i understand fully but ill do it step by step per your instructions and c how far i get.

THNX much 4 tha responce will b back later to tell u the result.

57. MT - August 12, 2008

just to cover the obvious points – do you have enough RAM? is your harddrive fast enough? do you have anything else on firewire that might interfere with performance? it sounds to me like a system performance issue. As such, i would look at anything that might be contributing to poor performance.

58. lamme - August 12, 2008

well i have 2gb ram and 2 duo core processors and im not doing any huge recordings with outrageous plugins…and the only thing i have on the fire wire is the digi 002

59. ConnorSmith - August 12, 2008

Yeah, I don’t think the computer specs are the problem.

If possible, I would just try to transfer everything to the Mac side and run it off of there. I’ve personally always been a little leery of running my main audio rig through a bootcamped Windows XP.

I don’t own Waves plug-ins right now, but I’m sure there has to be a way (although likely fairly painful with Waves’ reputation) of transferring authorization data onto the Mac side.

Yes! Deleting .plugion Rewire file made my Logic Studio Pro 8 alive again. Tnaks man, very happy with your solution! Greetz from the Netherlands, Peter.

I have the 002 pro tools le intel i mac never had problems at all until a few months ago . is there anything that just happened then . i have the 10,1,1 i do music and dj and radio commercial etc .i have not picked up and instrument for 2 months to record instruments, what is really going on. should i buy the up date which everybody says it doesn’t work or what. as far as the rewire . i use all waves plug ins which i never at all had any type of problem .i do have a rewire plugin to use and to work with on the vocal bundle pitch corrector. is this the rewire that is targeted or is there another pro tools rewire. what do i really need to do , is digi design still working on getting these bugs out and how many months does this go back when problems started with fellow pro tools users. once again i have pro tools LE 7 with intel based i mac.and i use all the waves p;lug ins as they are totally night and day over the stock digi plug ins , but my main problem was when i went to close a session it would not copy it gave me a error. i could not even make a copy to my outside hard drive which i use for back ups. i wound up getting rid of all my music and radio commercials etc that i did in the last year,
All i want is a working studio so i can get back to my music and cd. please help

62. ConnorSmith - August 19, 2008

Hi Bill

I’m confused as to what your problems are and what you are asking. It seems you are using PT 7 (what specific version though, such as 7.4.2) on an intel Mac. What operating system are you using?

Waves plug-ins are slightly notorious right now for having some problems with the Pro Tools world, ut from what I understand, almost all have been solved with updates.

I also am unsure as to what you mean when you discuss closing a project and copying it. Are you exiting Pro Tools and then trying to drag a backup copy to an external drive; or are you simply trying to do a “Save a Copy In…” from Pro Tools?

Thanks, hopefully we can get you up and working again.

63. Bill - August 19, 2008

Hi Connor,I have the intel computer i mac. using version 10.5.1 on the computer. Using pro tools LE 7.4.2 which a while back was their update. My pro tools console type will not “Copy” as you asked about save. It says it can not copy. That is when i figure i will make a copy in my external drive but it won’t copy to that. It first won;y “SAVE” and it won’t let me make a copy that leave me no way at all to re open the session,Many times my songs would loose the regions and i have the pro tools books all options no luck just lost out there and maybe not even so called saved by pro tools when it said saved,I want to make a real cd etc and can’t think of lost files. What is going on with pro tools. I had no problem until only around may -june of 2008 then i have lost interest in my music over not trusting pro tools. Any ideas. or comments?

64. Bill - August 19, 2008

OH Connor , I have version 10,4,11 on my i mac sorry the last notice said 10,5.1.

65. ConnorSmith - August 19, 2008

When you upgraded to 7.4.2, did you remove the older version of Pro Tools first? That is highly recommended.

Did you try opening any of the automatic backup versions of the files (saved automatically in “Session backup files” folder in the project folder)

See if those work and let me know. I know PT can be a bear sometimes… I am just about to do a clean wipe of my system and reinstall everything. As annoying as it is to do that a few times a year, it keeps everything healthy.

66. Bill - August 20, 2008

Hi Connor. When i up graded from 7.4.1 to 7.4.2 i don’t remember if i removed the 7.4.1 version . I don’t think i did. But that was about a full year ago and i did not have any problems at all. I will have to check into that. Is there a way to find out in pro tools LE console if i have both versions in my pro tools.

67. Bill - August 20, 2008

Hi Connor. I have the pro tools LE 7.4.2 on a intel i mac. With problems to lost files and pro tools not making a copy . I have the pro tools on auto saved as it was a standard setting,I did try to record into pro tools cd player music into a session, It did get it back it saved it but the bad thing was early summer it all happened out of no where. A error message could not copy THIS IS IT i remember “Due to VOLUME” that was the mail error.volume. and on tpo of that each song i tried to re open had all lost files which i mean were out lost in space. All of each song and things i just totally deleted. I figured i would just order few pieces of outboard gear and redo my songs over better. I Am involved in my own music and intro spots few radio commercials and few jingles here and there. so the rush to my own was delayed but now i am just about to restart things. The main problem was in the volume. I don’t know if there is a section to open to check on if anything jumped. But all happened few months ago. Any info. on this error unable to copy due to volume. I still have to find out what that error number was.Its really great you are there for all you do. Thanks. BM

68. ConnorSmith - August 20, 2008

Can you copy the exact error message that Pro Tools (or the computer in general) is giving you?

69. Bill - August 20, 2008

Hi Connor I will have to look in my papers to find the error on volume as to our past notices. Let me try to find it on the pro tools as the pro tools are all empty.

70. Raul Quesada - August 20, 2008

hi, I just install Pro Tools 7.4.2 and I took out the rewire files. But before installing it, the Mac OS X 10.5.4 udate was required. Now my Pro Tools is working fine, but my Logic Pro 8 crashes when reading the Core Audio…I tried installing Logic again, but it didn’t solve my problem…I also updated Logic to the 8.0.2 version. What can I do??

Thanks!

71. ConnorSmith - August 20, 2008

Raul – Did you uninstall the old version of Pro Tools before installing 7.4.2?

72. Raul Quesada - August 20, 2008

My old version was PT 7.3.1. Yes, I uninstall it. Then I install PT 7.4, then download the update (7.4.2) and is working fine. Do I need to do something in Logic? I started Logic holding the control button so I can view the program, and I change the audio preferences to “built-in” just in case, but it didn’t work either. What can I do to fix that? Before Leopard, both programs worked well. I use both of them. Tha’s why this is important to me.

Thanx!

73. ConnorSmith - August 20, 2008

Raul –
You will probably want to uninstall Pro Tools again. The 7.4.2 package from Digidesign’s website is a full installer, not an upgrade. So technically, you installed 7.4.2 over the 7.4 installation, which is not advised.

That may fix the CoreAudio problems. You also may want to trash your Digidesign and Logic preferences, and possibly even scan your hard disk for errors.

74. Raul Quesada - August 20, 2008

I’ll try that, makes a lot of sense to me. Finally I find someone who can help me! Somehow I thought the 7.4.2 was an update.

Thank You very much! Connor

75. ConnorSmith - August 20, 2008

Yeah, I can’t guarantee that will solve the problem though :)

Leopard/Digidesign/CoreAudio has been a slight pain for me lately. I actually spent the last two days formatting all of my drives and reinstalling both the operating system and all of my recording programs.

(Be sure to have 2 copies of backup before deleting!)

While it was a slight pain to do that, everything seems to be running much much more smoothly now.

76. raul Quesada - August 20, 2008

Ok, I uninstall the 7.4 and install 7.4.2, took out the “Digirewire”, and works fine. But my Logic still does the same thing. Where are placed those files (Digidesign & Logic preferences) to trash. I haven’t done that yet. Neither the scanning of the hard disk.

77. Mark Davini - August 21, 2008

I upgraded to Leopard, and found that Pro Tools would no longer work. The frustration begins. Tried staying at 10.5.3 and all that for about a week – no luck.
Uninstalled the Pro Tools and CoreAudio Manager software. I did a COMPLETE uninstall of only Pro Tools; I’ve still got Reason, Melodyne Essential, etc.
Updated Melodyne Essential to 1.8.3
Switched to an Edirol Audio Capture device. OS boots up and just, FINDS IT!!! That was a joy.
Go into the root library (in my case HD/Library/Application Support) and get rid of the ReWire plugin.
Don’t leave yet. Now, go into the ReWire folder within the Propellerhead Software folder and get rid of the ReWire shortcut AND the ReWire.bundle. This file will create ANOTHER ReWire plugin if you don’t get rid of it.
Empty trash, reboot and you should be stylin! If Garageband crashes, try launching again until you get the “Reset and Launch” option.

I am now running Mac OS 10.5.4 with Logic Express, Garageband, SoundTrack Pro, Reason, MeloDyne Essential quite happily using the Edirol FA-66. FCP Suite opens and runs flawlessly, and I feel very good. I hope this helps anyone who is looking for a way to remove the Digidesign elements of their lives. Peace.

78. raul Quesada - August 21, 2008

Hey Mark, so you’re not using Pro Tools anymore? I need to use both, Logic & PT.

79. Kat Gibbs - August 23, 2008

Hi i am having a nightmare of a time with my new mac pro 10.5.4 running logic 8 and protools 7.4.2. What i dont understand is that i was running both these programs on my last mac (ibookg4) no problems. Now i get ‘The application Logic Pro quit unexpectedly. I also get the same message with protools. People kept telling me to downoad software updates and so i did. I think that i may have missed something. Is digidesign yet to bring what i need out? I was reading in a forum last week that u can run logic fine if u hold down alt (i think, i forget the command) as it always crashes at the core audio part? can anyone help me? i am an audio engineering student going out of my mind because i cant use these programs!

thank you so much to anyone that can help me.

80. Damon Sink - August 23, 2008

Hi Kat,

If you haven’t already, go through the troubleshooting tips in this post (and follow up comments). If all of that is still of no avail, then I’m sure that Connor will weigh in. You are not alone!

A complete uninstall of PT and then re-install of 7.4.2 is where I would start.

Damon
The Studio Files

81. ConnorSmith - August 23, 2008

Its a little hard to troubleshoot these problems over the internet, but, I can tell you that I am running both Pro Tools and Logic on Leopard 10.5.4 without problem.

I accomplished this by doing an erase and install of Leopard, and then reinstalling all my recording software. You don’t necessarily have to do this, just make sure (especially with Pro Tools) that you UNINSTALL the old version before making the way to the latest version. Remember, the Pro Tools 7.4.2 download is a full installer, not just an upgrade to an older version. They are suggesting a clean uninstall first.

82. Kat Gibbs - August 24, 2008

Hey guys

Thank you so very much for going out of your way to help. I feel as though i have done everything EXCEPT re-installing Leopard! I really hope this is it! Connor, its really good to know that you are running both programs on Leopard 10.5.4 no problem!

Ill keep you posted! Thanks again!
Kat

83. raul Quesada - August 24, 2008

Hi guys, this is what I’ve done so far.
Everything was fine, I had my Logic pro 8 and Pro tools 7.3.1 working togehter (not at the same time) with the MBox Pro 2. And these are step by step to get to PT 7.4.2. Also notice that I didn’t uninstall Logic in all this process.
1. Uninstall Pro tools 7.3, (running on Tiger”)
2. Install Leopard (after finishing Logic is still there)
3. Update Leopard to 10.5.4 (it was required to install PT 7.4.2)
4. Install Pro tools 7.4.2, install Logic AGAIN! (just in case)
5. Update Logic to 8.2
6. Update to Pt 7.4.2 cs1
After doing all this, Pro Tools is working fine, wich is awesome. But Logic won’t start (crashes right in the moment of reading the Core Audio).
SO, Is this order ok? Something gotta be wrong I guess.
Should I go back to Tiger and wait for everything to be fix??
I’m using a MacBook Pro.

86. ConnorSmith - September 9, 2008

I might need a little more information to help you out.

Can you take a screenshot of your system to let me see the routing? You can email it to me.

87. BILL - September 9, 2008

Hi Connor. Well as i messed up giving you wrong info before hearing and reading all 10.5 etc. As you know i held off from pro tools due to other musical ventures for 2 months. As i left off i was having an error telling me unable to copy my files. Yes as you said was that save. Yes it would not say . as i open up each song all my regions were gone. Having the pro tools books it showed 4 ways and nothing worked. Well ALL NEW TOPIC. you know i am on pro tools console LE, totally cleared everything out of my computer and totally all pro tools files and everything to do with pro tools.I think i found my problem. All waves files thats waves plug ins. all etc. Well I am running on i mac 17″ intel , I STAYED AT TIGER 10 .4.11 Never updated to leopard 10.5 I re installed all my waves plug ins with waves on the phone as they are always great service.I have my pro tools running and recording. All is super clean and so far no problems. I even left my rewire in to see if any problems as i never had in couple years only problem started may of 2008 with that error. The only thing i can think of which i have a feeling you will say it is not connected is. I had a small bug in my hotmail email making it slow, not loading quick. and it got so bad i couldn’t even open my mail. this was getting worst over the summer. i had apple care as we did all steps different days until i did an ARCHIVE after that is when i reinstalled everything and it is running super quick and A1 tops. A NOTE< this is the only other thing at the same time. A few days before i sent my board out to Lion audio to have my board modified with a better pre amp and internal clocks and few other things which is great, That is when i kept getting that error which i have to still search for , I did get that error that would not save my music it was gone the next day and the same for every song i opened all lost files. NOW, the thing is when getting my board back it was a maybe to expect to have lost files since it was worked on. but i let it sit , that was when i first started writing to you about the error. it was there few days before sending the board out and still there when i got it back as i even called them i was hoping they can tell me the error, no luck. then i ran into your super great site now i read many of the topics. its great, well the only thing i can really think of it was a small bug that started in my email from opening those well only a couple of i won big bucks money will be willed to me, Well my wife warned me about those junk emails. i never open up ANY of those, I believe it hit my computer just enough to disturb the computer and it interfered with my pro tools, its all running better than ever, ONLY ONE QUESTION. do you think since i had i bug in my email hot mail i did get into my email and slowing down google ,did it effect my pro tools.?i did the ARCHIVE clean out and i really can’t tell you how great its recording along with the modified board, The modified board is to be a bit better than the new board out. I never A=B them.

88. BILL - September 9, 2008

Hi connor Bill again. Having the i mac intel based computer. Running on Tiger 10.4.11 I am on pro tools console 002LE installed was version 7.11 and 7.3 then last year adding pro tools updater 7.3.1. thats where i am at ,rewire is still in folder no problems yet.using all waves plug ins, as i don’t use the stock digi designs,All is running great. Where do i go from here .? is there one more i can step up to without going into leopard?I want to get the most out of my pro tools. I am worried about going to leopard. is there still problems as of sept 2008? I don;t want to walk myself into a wall of fire with problems. Did digi ever REALLY get it fixed or is their so called program still having bugs to fix?

89. ConnorSmith - September 19, 2008

Hi Bill

If everything on your system is working as you’d like, I wouldn’t upgrade.

No reason to potentially mess up a good thing.
I am running Pro Tools on Leopard 10.5.4 without any problems, but you are going to want to check and make sure all of your Waves plug-ins are also Leopard compatible before upgrading the operating system.

90. BILL - September 19, 2008

Hi Connor I came across the same error that sent me down having to totally clear out my pro tools. I am running on pro tools LE7.3 I using an i mac on tiger 10.4.11 and all waves plug ing. My problem i think is not in pro tools but in my external harddrive. Now so they may say not to record to the drive well i record were ever it take the music in my pro tools. I have the console board ant the rack. This is what happened. As to may 2008 I had this error appear. And as i mentioned I sent my digi out to get it modified at i think it was called red lion audio well its fine, they put a new master clock in ti and i guess a better pre amp etc. When i got it back i was expecting to have lost files over working on it , that is only to expect , if something is disturbed things may get lost. Well to keep on the picture A new small recording that i did i saved no problem at all all running great and sounding clear etc, So i say i want to save a copy. Well i saved a copy in my applications in my i mac which is connected to my pro tools le, Not problem i did this because it was only some little radio jingle that i knew was simple to delete from my applications folder. OK so good so far, But now Here it is,I needed to really save it was only a special few tracks of drum beats for a remake of a song which the tracks took time, I really wanted a copy in my “LACIE” external hard drive, now when i bought it it was correct as i bought it from the guitar center and i was told it runs on fire wire for my pro tools . Ok. So 3/4 of a year in use with it and maybe even longer all was well. UNTIL may. it was there and NOW ITS BACK . sounds like a movie well her is the error shown Now it did appear in the lacie but not to trust it to re enter the song back into pro tools this is my error that we were waiting for , A note i have not used pro tools for 2 to 21/2 months due to other musical ventures and a small radio show once a week many weeks i day but time during the week was needed, So i wasn’t using it non stop. And to say as in my last letter i had a bug in my email and had an archive cleared out all on my computer which i never did for few years, the small bug was a recent thing and not connected as far as i now believe, I think it is between my external hardrive and my digi pro tools> MY ERROR SHOWN. could not save a copy in copy of xxxxxsong name because Neo Assertion in “/Volumes/Development/vb-cliff/AlturaPorts/SDKs/Neo61/Libraries/Macintosh/Environments/Alone/../../../Source/CNeoIOBLOCK.cpp,line 164 thats first part then PROBLEM. I couldn’t close out of pro tools the screen on my computer read”Savechanges to the protools LE Documents “Copy of xxname of song before quitting. My Choices were the ovals don;t save cancel or save, I pressed “SAVE” this is the same style thing when just closing a session when it aks do you want to save , its the blue flat circle that appear. When i pressed save i got an error then i had to press ok on error. finally protools quit when i went over to lacie my external hard drive with an error i pressed to reopen pro tools then i was able to close pro tools down first then close down lacie, Note if i tried to just shut off lacie an error warning will appear warning must shut down pro tools session first of files may be lost in lacie . i did finally get it to shut down but it was many repeated attempts. This should be a real new article , May be for some reason external hard drives are getting foggy and not thing right?I have not called lacie as i still have an online warrantee for a few more months, I will wait to here from you if any idea, Is and can lacie go bad or just a little bad to “act up” at time. if i don’t use it my pro tools works great. And i can only truly feel it will work great as long as i don’t take my files outside of pro tools and or use the copy files in lacie, Sometimes when i went to get the files in lacie all my regions were gone on every song. this will be a real thing to figure out. I put the fault on my external hard drive lacie it was good but i can’t trust it for anything of real music that i WILL need, please reply.

91. ConnorSmith - September 22, 2008

Assertion errors are usually hard drive related problems.

You definitely don’t want to turn off or on any drive while Pro Tools is running. Pro Tools keeps track of any drives connected to the computer and doesn’t like when the status changes.

Have you ever formatted your drives and started from there?
I would backup your sessions and format the LaCie, then copy the files back to the LaCie and run it from there.

I’m having a hard time understanding your train of thought/figuring out your problem.

92. BILL - September 23, 2008

Hi Connor Sorry about the long email. The error did take alot of space, I never turn anything off ,Example if i record on pro tools i dod my recording,At the end of a session only if it something that i really can never loose “then i will turn on lacie. But if it a song i do the save button the standard save and sometimes I used to save a “copy “in my applications .That would all be a ok.But then If i needed another copy incase the impossible thing on pro tools ever happened i would have another saved copy in my lacie, Now the thing that i used to do is to have the lacie on with pro tools from start to finish, then i used to just leave the lacy off “unless” i felt for another place to save a copy. Question. Should I always have my external hard drive on with my pro tools during all my recording? and does it effect the quality of my recording when i have this so called external hard drive running at the same time?Do you think it “is” better to just leave the lacie on all the time same as the pro tools digi board that is when i am using it, I am now wondering “if” by having just my pro tools on doing my recording, “then “at the end of the session flipping “on” the lacie to make another copy , Is that throwing pro tools off like you said pro tools doesn’t like something just suddenly appearing?I am involved with my own music,Dj recordings, sometimes radio jingles and commercials, each are all of a different personal value to me, some i just trash after i make the cd but my music i save. As each song may be different in value to me if i lost it or not, No hit songs etc, just many hours as i play several instruments ,I can’t exactly pin point how much lacie was on during the error and or if it just happened on my music. Please try to give me an i answer on the above questions . Glad you are there. When ever you get a chance, Thanks, Bill

93. Adam Obernauer - October 8, 2008

Hi I just recently stumbled upon this site and wonder if you can help me. I just got a new computer and am running a DIGI 002 with Pro Tools 7.4.2 and a Leopard system and the 002 hardware is not recognized by the computer. Is there any driver that I have to download or is the 002 just not compatible with the newer software (which I really hope isn’t the case.) I’m sorry and hope you haven’t been asked this before but I hope to hear from you. Thanks a lot.

-Adam

94. ConnorSmith - October 8, 2008

Adam-

It really depends on the computer (processor, firewire set, mobo, OS, etc)

When buying any computer for use with Pro Tools, its really a necessity to go to Digidesign.com and make sure that your machine would be compatible.

I would go there and check out the compatibility tabs (or post your computer info here and we can try to help, but that might be slower)

good luck!

95. Adam Obernauer - October 8, 2008

Connor, Thanks for the fast response. The computer is an iMac 2.8 Ghz, 2 GB ram, 320 GB memory, 24 inch screen. I am running the Leopard system 10.5.4. I’m sorry I didn’t clarify that in the previous post I thought I did.

96. ConnorSmith - October 8, 2008

Couple questions:
1) Is your 002 cycling all the way through its power (if not, you need to replace the power harness)?

2) Is the firmware on the 002 updated?

Technically it should be working… hmm
You may want to check out Digidesign.com or Duc.digidesign.com (their help forum)

Did you install the software as recommended, and then are turning on the interface before the computer starts up, and then trying to run PT?

Also, when are you getting the error message (as PT starts and it won’t even open the program, OR are you getting errors that you lost communcation once you are in PT)?

97. Adam Obernauer - October 8, 2008

1.) My 002 is cycling all the way through the power. I can put it in standalone mode and into the actual mode where the faders move up to zero and it is ready to record.

2.) I haven’t updated the firmware. Where would I go about doing this?

I do turn on the board before I start the computer up, the LED light near the firewire connection is lit so I was told that the 002′s firewire connection is fine.

I’m getting the error message during the pro tools start up. The program never actually loads as it says “no digidesign hardware is located.”

Thanks a lot for your help, I really appreciate it.

98. Adam Obernauer - October 9, 2008

I checked the firmware specs on my board and they are:

system 1.04, sum= 32C9
Boot b1.00, sum= 47E6
Fader 1.05a

Hope that helps at all.

Thanks again for your help.

99. Adam Obernauer - October 22, 2008

Is there any verdict on something I can try or am I outta luck?

Thanks again for your help.

103. Bill - November 16, 2008

Hi Connor and /damon. All is great with my pro tools since i totally cleaned it out i mac and pt and re installed.I have a small question as to grid.pro tools le 7.4.1 i mac intel. i did not upgrade. when recording sometimes i am not in grid mood but before if i went back and forth from lets say slip or whatever to grid i would see the grids. for some time now i noticed that when i put it back to grid i do not get the grid lines. any ideas if there is something that turns off the grid yet acts as grid. i did try to tap a marker to get i sliver of a beat while in grid and it felt like it wanted to lock it in to a bar. maybe it was just too small to move and it felt that way. i still just don;t get the grids while changing , i will have to try to start a new song in grid to see if the grids appear but until then any answers.?

104. ConnorSmith - November 16, 2008

I’m away from my rig right now, but I’m prety sure showing grid lines in PT is a checkbox in Preferences.

The presence or absence of the grid lines doesn’t affect the grid itself though. The grid will still work.

Where cab i but it besides digi, and how many upgrade am i behind, “all i really want is that elastic audio”
I still see people having problems.

111. ConnorSmith - January 28, 2009

Bill –
I do not understand what you are asking.

112. ConnorSmith - January 28, 2009

You can go straight to version 8
http://www.sweetwater.com/feature/digidesign2008/protools8.php

But, you will need to be in Leopard.

It would be hard to find the installer discs, but 7.4 had elastic audio as well, and would work on Tiger.

If I were you, I’d make the jump to Leopard and version 8. Its really a substantial upgrade for the program.

113. Keny - February 26, 2009

Daniel I have Protools 7.4 and Logic 8 both working on my Imac with no problems. . You need to make sure you have your wireless firewire option is disabled in your network settings. that fixed the problem for me. Sure was frustrating, if you still can’t fiqure it out if that doesn’t solve the problem. make sure you update your interface drivers.

114. Daniel Pinci - March 1, 2009

Hi all. I’m running:
logic 8
macbook pro 17″ 2.6processor 2gig memory and 250gig hd
+external seagate 1.5 TB hd
Native inst. komplete 5
superior drummer 2
kore 2 hardware controller
m audio fastrack ultra
various other third party AU plug-ins for logic

When ever I run NI with superior drummer…
even with buffer to max
repaired permissions
wireless ntwk off
no runaway application memory usage

still…
song will barely playback…
coreaudio error system cannot process in time yadda yadda

got a major project due and cannot even finish a song.
HELP!

115. Damon Sink - March 2, 2009

Daniel,

Have you checked your dfd settings for the NI instrument? Not sure if that could be it, but I know lots of NI products are not playing nice.

An emergency workaround might look like this:

1. Remove NI tracks from your session
2. Do a stereo mix
3. Import that into another DAW (even GarageBand)
4. Program your drums with Superior Drummer and then
5. Move those tracks back into PT as audio and mix

I do not use PT for MIDI programming–it’s getting better, but obviously still a lot of bugs and incompatibility.

116. Kirk Bramwell - March 15, 2009

I was able to update the software to PT8, however I still can not get the core audio to work wtih itunes. I’ve tried to toggle between the internal and the digi002, and no luck. If i chose the internal, the songs play fine. When i chose the digi002 the song goes at a stand still. THis is very frustrating, please help, i’m not sure what else to do. I’m running a powerbook with leopard. The core audio drive shows connected, but NO sound!

117. ConnorSmith - March 18, 2009

@Kirk

So in Audio MIDI Setup, you are choosing Digidesign HW for the output device, right?

I would trash all your PT and coreaudio preferences, and see where that gets you. Update to the latest cs for PT8 (maybe even do a new clean install)

118. Kirk Bramwell - March 18, 2009

Yes and it shows in my audio settings under sound, however when I play itunes it does not work. I tried toggling between the internal sound and the digi002 hw and when the digi002 is selected the sound goes away and the track stops.

I was curious and created a track within garageband, when I choose the digi002 it works just fine. It seems that itunes is just completely broken.

I’ve tried all the steps you’ve provided and still no sound from itunes or playing audio from a webpage. I’ve de-installed, and re-installed 8 with the updates again…still does not work.

119. vale - March 19, 2009

hi all, i have a macbook 2.5GHz and a mbox1. it works fine with protools 8 and logic, but i cannot play through it audio from itunes or garage band or any system audio. i’m very frustrated. help me, please.

120. vale - March 19, 2009

i updated garage band to v.4.1.2 and solved. but the problem remains for itunes, and this is more important for me…

121. Damon Sink - March 20, 2009

Could be a problem with older hardware and digi drivers for current OSX coreaudio… What systems are you running?

ds

122. vale - March 20, 2009

10.5.6… pt8 and itunes 8.1 thanks.

123. ConnorSmith - March 20, 2009

Did you try/have success with an earlier version of iTunes (and/or the OS)??

124. vale - March 20, 2009

i try to downgrade itunes but nothing has changed. i had an ibook with panther and pt 6.9 before and all worked. since i have my new macbook with leopard i have this problem with itunes.

125. ConnorSmith - March 20, 2009

@vale

Are you using the latest cs of Pro Tools (I’m pretty sure its 8cs02)? I haven’t fully read the bug fix reports for the release, but there could be core audio fixes.

I haven’t had any problems, but I haven’t left 10.5.5. I know sometimes if I try to play movies in iTunes, I first have to play a song to “jolt” the PT Coreaudio into working properly. Other than that, I have no problems.

126. vale - March 21, 2009

great! i update from cs1 to cs2 and now itunes works from mbox. thank you connor, very very much.

127. ConnorSmith - March 21, 2009

^^great!

Bugs are a pain, glad its working now.

128. ConnorSmith - March 25, 2009

I think you are asking two different things.

To transfer to another studio to record vocals, you need to make a data CD of the Pro Tools session file, as well as the surrounding folders (which contain audio, plug-in settings, etc). When you first create a Pro Tools session, the program saves the session in a folder with the same name as the project. Grab that folder from the hard drive (which contains the session file, the audio files, fade files, etc), and burn it to a disc. If they are using an older version of Pro Tools than you, do a “Save Copy In” from your session, and be sure to click “Copy All Audio Files” and related boxes when asked. Then drag that folder to the drive.

When you are ready to go to the mastering house, bounce 24 bit wav files of all your songs. Then burn those to a data cd. (Make a new burn folder on your desktop, drag the files in, right click, and burn)

129. Shawn - July 23, 2009

Hi Connor, I have an Imac 2.4GHZ with 4GB RAM and OS X 10.5.7. The computer is just a few months old and since day one the Core Audio Drivers will not stay connected to the system. They cannot be used for anything on the computer unless i restart the system once the core audio has disconnected. I am using an MBox with the latest Core Audio Drivers 7.4.2 and Itunes 8.2.1 I have a boot to Windows XP where the MBox works just fine with Audio programs there(Acid, Reason). If I get it going it will stay connected until I stop playing itunes and using the computer. If I step away from the machine it disconnects. This is very frustrating since I just made the switch to Mac and get the audio to work for music and recording. I am not currently using any music software on the mac side except for Garage Band. Please help!!

Hello conner i have an imac running os 10.5.8 my protools an dlogic run fine through my 002 but i can not get my sytem to broadcast over the internet depsite anything from the net comes through my 002 mac audio prefrences set to in 002 out 002 i open logic set channels to record i hear everything but ustream doesnt hear nothin

131. Damon Sink - August 27, 2009

Hi Virgil (Damon here)

Can you select th e002 as the Audio Source in the ustream settings window?

132. virgil - August 27, 2009

Hey Damon yes I select the 002 on ustream but it doesn’t register any sound coming from the computer or the 002. Sound goes from the net and I bhear it but the level meter on ustream neve moves

133. Damon Sink - August 27, 2009

Hmmmmmm.

Try setting your outputs in Logic to Built-in Audio (don’t use the 002) and then select that at ustream. This could be a case of Digi drivers not playing nice… I dunno.

DS

134. Virgil - August 29, 2009

but if i dont use my 002 i cant use my mic and my keyboard

135. Damon Sink - September 3, 2009

I see. SO you are wanting to stream a live performance? This one is for Digi tech support, I think; but I’m worried that there is a digi/core audio incompatibility that is not going to be resolved. Do you know of any other producers using this combo to ustream?

I Have a Digi 003 rack and a new mac pro with 8gb of ram which run fine all of the time on Leopard 10.5.8. However a few issues! When i run Quicktime, it never plays audio and when i press the space bar to preview audio files via the finder no audio again. Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this problem?

137. Danny Moynahan - October 31, 2009

I’m having trouble opening up audio tracks in Logic 8. Whether I add new audio tracks from within a current and open session or open a new session from a template with audio tracks, they all show up as instrument tracks.

The problem started in the middle of a session. I had already recorded 3 tracks of audio and then the trouble started. Logic would crash every time I hit record. I realized many crashes later that I was trying to record audio on an instrument track and that no matter how I tried to open audio tracks (even from a template!) they all opened as instrument tracks.

I opened an old session-one that pre-dated this problem-and tried to open an audio track. No luck.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Danny Moynahan
G5 Power PC, OS 10.5.8, 2.5 GHz, digi 002 rack, Logic 8.0.2

138. ConnorSmith - October 31, 2009

@Danny
Hmm. That’s a weird one I haven’t seen before. Did anything in your setup change when the problem started (OS upgrade, new plug-ins, etc.)?

I would trash any preferences files related to Logic and see if that helps. If not, I would uninstall and reinstall Logic and see where that gets you.

Also, does this happen if you restart your computer without your 002R hooked up (so you’d be using normal Apple CoreAudio as your I/O)?

If you can, let us know what works/doesn’t as you try new things.

139. Desperate in Detroit - February 14, 2010

Well apparently, PT 8/Digidesign Core Audio are still not playing nicely together in 2010. I *used to* have a perfeclty stable system on a G5 PPC 2.3GHz machine running OSX 10.4.11 and PT 7.4 with the 002 rack. After upgrading to Leopard (10.5.8) and PT8.01 and the 003 rack, the machine has become perfectly unusable!!

Core Audio starts all by itself after bootup and then quits just as mysteriously (no audio programs have called for it….hmmm)

Core Audio drops connection to the 003 rack at random intervals during the odd times that a session actually runs

PT will crash with two tracks of audio and ZERO plugins.

iTunes is garbled, with pops and clicks

I have adjusted the hardware playback parameters to every conceivable permutation, zapped PRAM, upgraded to 4.5GB RAM, am using a digi-approved Glyph drive (GT050), replaced all FW cables, running the rack FW connection through the G5′s FRONT port, uninstalled all non-digi plugins, disabled Time Machine and Firewire Networking, verified that the FW interface on the Mac is okay, renewed and updated all iLok software, tried trashing all prefs, uninstalled/reinstalled PT and OSX 10.5.8 more times than I can count……AND STILL DO NOT HAVE A USABLE SYSTEM.

Avid/Digi are absolutely no help and seem to have given up.

The only thing not really checked out/verified is the 003 rack. Anybody know of a diagnostic to run that could check it out for intermittent connection trouble?

Or does this all boil down to super-crappy interaction between Digi Core audio drivers and Leopard?

Anyone else reached the end of the line like me? Ideas for a next move other than going back to PT 7.4/OSX 10.4.11?

140. ConnorSmith - February 15, 2010

@DesperateInDetroit

I would back track to 7.4/10.4

PowerPC’s are at the end of the road for Digi compatibility unfortunately… While they are tecnically qualified, I would guess that their compatibility performance is not at the top of the Digi priority list.

Sorry… stinks.

141. alcapaino.MG - May 4, 2010

Sup there,

My digi003 disconnects from Core Audio (Pro Tools LE 8.0.3/Leopard 10.5.6) frequently. Yesterday I noticed this to happen everytime when I turned ON the room tube-light which also failed to get ON due to low voltage problems around the neighborhood during evening/night. I think this is the reason for loss of communication and frequent timeouts. I’ll deploy a UPS or stabilizer and see!

People: Share this point or suggest if you ‘einstein’ it otherwise
