DIGIDESIGN PRO TOOLS 8: Pro Tools 8 (which includes Pro Tools HD, Pro Tools LE and Pro Tools M-Powered) has been completely updated with a new user interface, dozens of new bundled plug-ins (including five new virtual instruments and 20 effects), fully integrated MIDI and score editors, and expanded editing features. The user interface is enhanced with a more modern color palette and higher-contrast text and graphics, yet the key functions users rely on are still right where they should be, while enhancements—such as dockable Editor windows and a configurable Edit Window toolbar—make it easier to navigate than ever. Pro Tools 8 software will be available in late 2008 for Windows Vista (32-bit Business or Ultimate), Windows XP and Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)-based Pro Tools HD, Pro Tools LE and Pro Tools M-Powered systems. I’m actually not going to AES either… too many papers/reports/projects etc… But, plenty of people up here are, so I will be getting a full scoop.
Here is why I am super anxious for PT 8. Yes, this is my full and biased opinion

Yes, although I am a big fan of Pro Tools, I know that (the LE line) really has its shortcomings, including some basic features contained in even FREE daws. I’ve learned that its mainly because PT was originally coded as a hardware-based software, and that the LE was initially created as a “light” version of TDM, not as a true native system. So, the problem lies that when trying to “slim down” Pro Tools, the millions of lines of arguably outdated code weren’t an easy task to modify.
There have been talks that Pro Tools would need basically somewhat of a complete rewrite to be able to make the changes that users want. Version 7 has been out for quite awhile… and what that short preview of version 8 says means a LOT of changes (and I’m sure that’s only skimming the surface).
What we are really hoping for is a new line of higher-end LE interfaces (or at least some more options) and ADC for plug-ins (if not also for external routing). The improved MIDI implementations are also going to be awesome.
Personally, I hope they don’t alter the user interface that much. I very much prefer the simple layout and design to the more flashy DAWs.
That being said, I won’t be rushing out to buy the first version. I’ll wait for the first patch
