Video: Grouping Tracks in Pro Tools LE March 11, 2008

This is The Studio Files.com video on how to group tracks in Pro Tools LE. Probably the easiest place to group your tracks is going to be in the mixer window, and youcan open that with Command+= key command. First you are going to want to open up the “Mix Groups” window. Do that by putting your cursor in the bottom left hand corner of the screen on the double arrow, and that will pop-out the sidebar. Notice that Pro Tools already creates a group for you called “ALL”, and if you enable that group, every single track in your mix will be selected together. Let’s make our drum groups. So first, we will make an ALL DRUMS group, just like we did in the Logic video. So select all your drum tracks, and to make a group, hit Apple+G (same thing as Command+G). Call the group ALL DRUMS, and we want them to be edited and mixed together. Just like in Logic there are other options for mutes and solos, but for now, we are just going to leave those as is. Hit OK. Notice that right here, a letter is placed to indicate the different groups. Watch as we make new groups, those letters will change color, change capitalization, etc. It all depends on the groups you’ve made and have active. So now lets make our snare group. We have a snare top, a snare bottom, and a snare sample. Hit Command+G, type in Snares, and make sure Edit and Mix is checked. Make the toms group the same way (low tom, mid tom, and high tom selected). And finally, our overheads group. Right now, our ALL DRUMS group is selected (and active), so if I move one drum fader, they are all going to move in proportion to each other. But let’s say I didn’t want to move all my drums at one time. Just go into the Mix Groups window and click “ALL DRUMS” so that it is off. Now when I move my kick drum mic fader, it doesn’t move anything else. And notice, that the letters have changed. The Kick mic, which had no other groups, now has no letter. But, the snares, toms, and overheads (which all have their own groups), the letters became lowercase. If I turn off the Snares group, that “b” goes away. Again, with my snares group active, if I move the snare drum top mic, it moves all the other mics in proportion. This same principle will apply to all your other tracks (bass tracks, vocal tracks, guitar tracks, effects tracks… etc). And, now you know how grouping tracks works in Pro Tools LE.
