Creating Your Home Studio January 29, 2008

If you are starting to put together a recording setup, I would suggest asking yourself these questions first:
1) When all is said and done, what would I like to be able to accomplish in this studio? (i.e. tracking full bands, tracking solo artists and rappers, composing beats and loops, film scoring, mixing… etc etc.)
2) Do I have any equipment now that could be incorporated into the new setup?
3) Do I have any preferences? (Such as, Mac vs. Windows, Computer Recording vs. Multitrack recorder, etc.)
4) What sort of room will I setup in? What are the dimensions?
5) What is my budget?
Once you have these questions answered, it will be much easier to get going on the whole process. With careful planning and execution, people with all sorts of budgets and needs can make their way into a functional and fun studio. Over the next several weeks, I will be posting some possibilities for different budgets. These posts will be entitled “Build a home studio for X dollars”.

Dear Friend, i live in georgetown, guyana,south america.i want to set a digidesign-based 003 or 24. i am a complete newbie,but i’m also a singer-songwriter. my country is relatively small,so recordings of digi’s quality should do just fine here in the caribbean.but i need some guidance in putting together every bit of this studio from head to toes i’m into r&b,soul pop & rock. i like stevie wonder,michael jackson,james ingram,jeffrey osbourne,michael mcdonald etc.& then i’ll ask u about soundprofing,wiring,airco etc. st yr convenience.but i’m extremely excited.nobody here knows enough to guide anyone.and i want to write and produce performing artistes and learn how to become a producer. as far as a budget goes i would appreciate a mid to high-end setup.using the 003 and digi’s 24board.if u could find the time to help i would not forget u.please include software,plugins etc etc. computers and no computers .hope i’m not asking too much. thanx,Rupert Singh.
Building a studio is a big project, but definitely a possible project.
Here’s the most basic information I’d need to start thinking about recommendations:
- Total budget (for all equipment, treatment, computers, software, etc…). How much do you want to spend total?
- Is this a single-room or multiple room setup (i.e., is the control room separate from the live room, are there any additional booths/iso, etc.)?
- How many simultaneous inputs would you want at one time (i.e. a 2 track setup, 8 track, 48 track, etc…)
One thing to note is that the Digidesign Control24 and C24 are NOT interfaces, they are just preamps and control surfaces.
