Does your Pro Tools 8 install freeze? March 20, 2009

Posted by ConnorSmith in : Digidesign, Leopard, Pro Tools , trackback

I’ve been getting a lot of emails from people who’s Pro Tools 8 LE install is freezing or stalling.  Most often it happens during the “Running pro tools creative collection installer script” message.  95% of the time so far, the solution is:

…patience.

Some users have reported waiting over 30 minutes at this stage.  Apparently a long install is normal, so take a break and let your computer go for it.

Now – if you are waiting an hour or more, and its still stalled, then I would start to think that something is wrong.  Send me an email/comment here, and we will try our best to get your setup working.

Ironically I was just loading this when I hit your website.
I was in repair mode already.

It was taking so long during creative collection that I thought the disk was dirty, so I pulled it out and cleaned it, then went to add/remove programs to repair PT8. At this point it did repair load and the creative collection loaded the same slow way. On a fast PC it took about 18 minutes.

Everything is fine now.

2. ak - April 1, 2009

Funny, I was experiencing this “hang up” (at the “Running Pro Tools Creative Collection Installer Script” phase of the install) and finally opened up Safari and googled the problem after about 15 minutes of no progress.

The moment I loaded this page, the install completed.

3. ConnorSmith - April 1, 2009

^^Glad to hear it worked out.

4. Raphael [FR] - April 12, 2009

Fiou !! Thank you, I was about to relaunch all the process ^^

5. BBmi109 - April 13, 2009

Any recommendations for the other 5%??

6. ConnorSmith - April 13, 2009

@BBmi109

How long did you let it sit there before you determined it was not going to install? Are you doing a clean install of 8? What computer (specs, OS, etc.) are you installing this on?

7. cornelius - April 21, 2009

i was waiting but on my mac it will ask me to restart it again any help i have a mac 10.5.6, 1 gig

8. cornelius - April 21, 2009

do I need to install new updates for the plugins?

9. ConnorSmith - April 28, 2009

@Cornelius

I’m confused by your question. Is your install stalling? What is asking you to restart? Are you doing a clean install of 8?

10. alex - April 28, 2009

mine freezes at the “welcome to pro tools 8″ little box thing!!

how do i fix it?

11. ConnorSmith - April 28, 2009

@Anyone needing help
Read this please http://thestudiofiles.com/?p=848

@ Alex
Can you give some of the information mentioned in that link above^^ (especially system specs, etc.) Also, can you be more specific on what that screen is? How far into the installation process is that? How long have you let it sit? Are you doing a clean install of PT8?

12. Pony Hill - May 10, 2009

I have already installed from the Protools 8 install disk (installs fine) but when I try to open it freezes at “Structure.dpm” every time. I let it sit there like that over night, but it was still froze there the next morning! I still haven’t even got to the authorization page yet! I even had a computer tech come over and try to figure it out, but he was at a loss.

Paying this kind of $$ for a couple’a CD’s you would think it would be a simple download and not such a headache.

I am actively trying to find someone to trade me out this 8 program for the old 7!

13. ConnorSmith - May 11, 2009

@Pony
Read this – we may be able to help (impossible without knowing more info)

I am trying to run Protools m-powered 8 on my Dell which I’ve got XP sp2 and even added 2G memory. I have an Maudio fast track pro which I wanted to use as the interface, however it is virtually useless since I cant get the Protools to open. I’ve unistalled all digidesign programs and then tried to reinstall without plug-ins, but installs them anyway. Like I said, no matter what I try, when you try to open it it freezes at “Structure.dpm” every single time.

15. ConnorSmith - May 11, 2009

Did you delete your preferences and databases?

Have you tried moving plug-ins out of the plug-in folder? (You can just throw them on the desktop temporarily to see if you can get PT to boot)

Does the fast track work with other applications?

16. montrealaudio - May 17, 2009

Ive got a brand new Macpro 8 cores. 6 gig ram, 1 TB HD. Just bought the Mbox2 PRO and am trying to install PT LE 8. My installer has been hanging at “Finishing Installation – running pro tools creative collection installer script”, I am reluctant to close and restart the installation in the hopes that it will somehow snap out of it. This is a brand new PT installation, I got it because I was told it would be more stable than the 500 dollar apple software I was using. Seems to be giving me problems right from the get go! When I try to quit the installer it tells me that It cant because its busy. Sooo I guess I will wait and check this forum for replies.

17. montrealaudio - May 17, 2009

IT CHANGED!!! I waited it out, it finished! We are a bunch of impatient ones arent we…!!!

18. exquire - May 20, 2009

I’m having a similar problem but mine won’t even begin the Installation Process it freezes right on the main Pro Tools set up screen.

20. jmes - May 22, 2009

It freezed at “Installing Digidesign hardwaer drivers…” plees help!

21. Tulikari - June 9, 2009

Thanks a bunch! It took my mac mini 25 minutes to get past the freeze at the finish the installation. Maybe they wanted to teach new PT8 users the old proverb – patience is a virtue.

So patience my fellow installers!

22. Terry Peck - June 20, 2009

Same here. Waited it out and it installed. I went to the website to complete it. However, when I click on the icon, it won’t load. As a matter of fact, it doesn’t do anything! Uninstalled and reinstalled 3x. It acts like it installs okay, but when I click on the pro tools icon…nothing. has this happened to anyone? MacG4 1 TB

23. mahesh - June 23, 2009

my protools 8 dosent load it takes a long time to load my mac g5 duel processor with 1.5 gb ram

24. max - June 24, 2009

25. Tom - July 8, 2009

Hi,

I just tried installing Pro Tools 8 LE on my 1.8 Powermac G5. The install screen in so confusing because lighting quick, it installed about 87% of the way and then stops and I get beach ball of death. I thought something freaked so I shut Mac down and reinstalled. Same thing happened. I don’t know why they couldn’t fix the timing of the install window. Patience is one thing, but making it look like the screen got stuck is counter-productive and annoying. So finally, I just waited and then it worked. However, I installed the 3rd party plugin and the same thing happened. I thought again that something had gone wrong, b/c it paused around 87%, Turned off computer again (For some reason, Mac can never just get Pro Tools to “Force Quit”) and now my computer won’t start. I have been trying to diagnose, but think it might be PRAM or battery. My best guess. But please communicate to Pro Tools that this is horrible. Make the install window accurate on time. I don’t care if it is a 5 min install or a 2 hour, but just have the screen reflect some sort of progress, not super fast and then crazy long pause.

26. ConnorSmith - July 10, 2009

@ Terry
We’ll need more detailed information on your setup (computer specs, program versions, etc.)

@mahesh
Im confused – does it not load at all, or just take a long time?

@Tom
Confused – are things working?

27. orjime - July 11, 2009

i installed pro tools right and then it freezes at structure.dpm i think!!whats is wrong??my cmputer can hadnle pro tools???whats going on??

28. the dougfatehr - July 11, 2009

I have spent my entire saturday trying to sort this.

Powermac dual 2.5GHz, 8GB Ram, 10.5.6.

I reinstalled Leopard from a retail DVD, installed the 10.5.6. combo updater and attempted the Pro Tools 8 install.

Still the same behavior, can’t get past the creative collection install script, if you move the mouse the spinning beach ball comes up and then you get kernel panic forcing a machine restart.

WTF?

29. the dougfather - July 11, 2009

Just too add.

Patience doesn’t appear to help, the longer i wait the more starnage stuff seems to happen. The graphics start going crazy, digitl looking distortion up around the clock in the top left, it then spreads across the top of the screen.

I love Pro Tools but i only ever get this crap with Digi products, never any other vendor.

30. ConnorSmith - July 11, 2009

Although the Power Mac’s are supposed to work with PT8, I have heard some complaints from users having problems. Granted, these aren’t really completely confirmed, and I can’t say for sure that the computer itself was causing the problem, but it was a common element in each case.

If you have a version of 7.x, does/did that work in Tiger? Have you tried it in Leopard?

After you reinstalled Leopard, did you try installing any other software? Have you had this problem with anything else?

If your problem continues – I would highly recommend starting a thread on duc.digidesign.com. Digidesign has tech support guys on the forum constantly and they can usually work out the more buggy problems.

31. Raj - July 12, 2009

Is there anyone who can solve this damn issue of pro tools getting fuc&ed up at the Creative collection install page ??? it doesnt seem to work out at all for me , its just stuck , and says it returned an error all the time

32. ConnorSmith - July 12, 2009

@raj

We’ll need more information, such as:
Pro Tools version, clean install?, computer/specs and OS, how long did you wait, etc.

33. Mike - July 13, 2009

Hi guys,

I got on the phone to Digi today and they have sent me a link to download Pro Tools 8 via digidelivery.

Interestingly, this download is 1.5GB bigger than the one from the ‘My Digi’ page.

In response to the question earlier, Pro Tools 7.4.2 installs fine on the machine, it’s only 8.0 that’s giving me grief.

I’ll post back the results of my new Pro Tools 8.0 download.

34. Raj - July 13, 2009

Hey guess what ??? I followed a hint from Chunk’s comment , I installed Pro tools several times , but was getting the same error , then instead of reinstalling I went into repair mode by running the installer , and Voila !!! It finished the installation this time , try it , I think it might work for other’s also …

35. Mike - July 13, 2009

Hi guys,

Just to let you all know the alternate install link that Digidesign supplied to me has worked perfectly.

So in short, if you have a mac and your installs constantly fail’s don’t waste any more time and get on the phone to Digi.

The installer is totally different, once it mounts it has a Pro Tools backdrop as opposed to the standard white one you get with direct download.

36. Nick - July 20, 2009

I’ve seen a lot of posts in regards to Pro Tools installing fine but freezing at “structure.dpm”, this is the problem I’m having does anyone know a solution to this?

37. Bryon - July 28, 2009

Just wondering if any of you guys figured out the issue on PT8 freezing while loading at “structure.dpm” The issue has to do with Internet Explorer 8. To fix the issue you have to unistall IE8
More info here: http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=243183

To save you some time from getting frustrated with another issue you will run into with unistalling IE8, If you are running windows XP with SP3 you cannot unistall IE8 without uninstalling SP3 first.

38. chris - August 4, 2009

everytime i start the installation, it comes up with a message sying “pro tools 8 requiers windows xp with SP2, but i have windows XP with SP2
Any ideas?

39. ste - August 6, 2009

It’s 15 minutes i’ve my finger crossed… and it’s not easy writing in this way… Hope everything will work… It’s so long “about a minute” for this gnikcuf script :D

40. vincent leary - August 14, 2009

im at the “installing protools creative collection” part and its been there for almost or even more than an hour haha

i just bought the m-box 2 mini with pro tools le 8 two days ago at guitar center.

digidesign.com or the contact number doesnt help at all what so ever.

SO WHAT DO I DO!?!?!?

41. Justin McIver - September 14, 2009

My freeze error seems to be completely not related to any of the above –

I just did an entire re-install of windows XP and cleared the hardrive, did all of the microsoft updates (SP3 and .NET frameworks, etc.) and the computer was running great.

Tried installing PT 8 LE upgrade, CD booted up fine, clicked install, started to run… then after clicking “Continue installation” when the windows warning pops up about unknown software or whatever for the SECOND time, it freezes – as in, the entire computer freezes, can’t move mouse, can’t hit anything… need to manually turn the computer off and back on again. This is happening during the time that it is trying to install the digidesign drivers.

Any clue? Here are my computer specs:

1 gb Ram
120gb hard drive
intel pentium 4 processor, 3.0 ghz
Nvidia GeForce FX 5400? graphics card
tried with BOTH an mbox 2 and a dig002, froze exact same spot (5 times in a row)

worked fine before system restore. any thoughts? please help!

42. Chuckp - September 18, 2009

The fix to the structure hang on launching PT8 is removing IE8. I’m sorting things out maybe I can help others. Seem to have been hacking PT8 for people in my area as a side job lately.

49. marsman - November 2, 2009

I was having the structure.dpm freeze. Uninstalled Internet Explorer 8 and it fixed the issue. I would suggest uninstalling IE8. And if it takes it back to IE7 uninstall it again and it should take you back to IE6…. Download Mozilla Firefox if you want a decent web broswer. Hope this helps.

50. ConnorSmith - November 2, 2009

@marsman

Huh – that’s a new one.
Well I’ll update my last post to tell others to try that and see where it gets them. Thanks for the info!

Check out this page -
http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?langid=1&navid=54&itemid=28796

There are links to the 64-bit drivers and other info on compatibility.
Let me know if this solves your problems.

54. James - November 12, 2009

ive downloaded the latest driver updates. Ive searched high and low on the m-audio website and cant find anything that would make this from happing. I make sure i do a bunch of searching before i ask questions becuz i find it that 9 times out of 10 it just requires some research but this i am stumped. If Protools wasnt such a great program that it is i would never touch anything m-audio again

55. ConnorSmith - November 13, 2009

@James

Hmmm… that’s a tough one then. If I were you, I’d head over to Duc.Digidesign.com and either start a thread to ask this question, or just email Digidesign tech support directly. Hopefully they can give some more insight… Thanks.

56. Tryin Everything - November 14, 2009

Help Help Help…..

I just bought the Pro Tools 8 LE with the MBOX Mini and when I input the CD in my laptop which runs on the same OS as my Laptop, the “setup.exe” file opens right up to the main man where i can install the software. Unfortunately, my desktop just displays the same box, but blank and only 1/3 of the size. Nothing else happens after this. I’v eupdated, Flash Player, Quick Time, my Memory…everything and still nothing. Can someone help me out please? Thanks

57. ConnorSmith - November 15, 2009

@Tryin’ Everything

I went ahead and linked your duplicate question on the other page to over here – don’t worry, you only need to post it in one place. We’ll find it :)

For starters, we are going to need more information about your system (check out this post – we need this information – http://thestudiofiles.com/?p=848). Without specific on your system, its impossible to diagnose.

58. Dave - November 16, 2009

Hi

Hi. I’m trying to instaal protools le 8 on my power mac g5 dual and it is telling me that the software is not compatible with my computers.

61. Raphael - November 18, 2009

Hello,
I’ve managed to install fine, but now I’m freezed on the PT initializing window on the “Setting up Peripherals Initializing Machine Control” part. How should I proceed?

I’m using a
macbook Pro 2.53GHZ
Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB RAM

Thx

62. ConnorSmith - November 22, 2009

@Dave
Is this a new install? Upgrade? Did you delete your PT preferences?

@Juan
Check out this thread – there are some ideas from Digi
http://duc.digidesign.com/showthread.php?t=238223

@Raphael
Have you trashed your preferences? Do you have any 3rd party plug-ins installed?

63. Jim - November 25, 2009

My install is freezing when I get to “installing Digidesign hardware drivers. I have tried it 3 times now and waited at least 45 minutes each time. WIll it help to call digidesign and see if they can fix it?

64. AJ - December 2, 2009

Hey, I just got a new Macbook Pro with OS X 10.6. 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM. So I also have PT 8 LE with the M Box 2 and went to install PT on my computer. Stuck it in the drive, opened the DVD icon, double clicked the “Install Pro Tools LE.mpkg” icon where it prompts for approval to continue with installation. I hit “continue” and then…nothing happens. I don’t see anything on the screen, no “Welcome to Pro Tools” or anything. Suggestions?

65. AJ - December 2, 2009

Clarification on that last post: The approval message I get it “This package will run a program to determine if the software can be installed: To keep your computer secure, you should only run programs or install software from a trusted source. If you’re not sure about this software’s source, click Cancel to stop the program and the installation.” I still have the box it came in – I know where it came from, I trust the source. I hit “Continue” – that’s where the freeze-up happens. Is this a patience deal?

66. AJ - December 2, 2009

Hate to post again – figured out that last bit, it was just a patience thing. But now, I’m getting another error: “The installation failed. The following installation step failed: run preflight script for Pro Tools Creative Collection Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.”

67. ConnorSmith - December 2, 2009

@Jim
It probably seems ridiculous – but I would wait longer. Even up to a few hours. For some reason, the install can just take forever. Unless you are still in the period where its free to call Digi, I would suggest emailing them (assuming waiting longer doesn’t help). Email support is always free.

@AJ
I may be an issue with the OS – did you download install a “combo” updater from Apple on your OS, or did you just use Software Update?

68. erin - December 5, 2009

so i think i downloaded the upgraded protools 8 le to my new mac book pro 10.5.7 but where do i find it to open and run it?? .

69. erin - December 5, 2009

please and thanks in advance.

70. ConnorSmith - December 5, 2009

@Erin
Not quite sure what you are asking – can you not find the installer file? It’s likely either in your downloads folder or on the Desktop. Let me know if you need more help.

71. Bianca - December 8, 2009

PT8 freezes at “Setting up Peripherals Initializing Machine Control” part. What do I do?

I have a MacBook Pro 10.6.1

72. ConnorSmith - December 8, 2009

@Bianca
Has this problem always happened, or did it used to work?
Have you trashed your preferences and databases?
Do you have any third party plug-ins installed?
What PT interface are you using?
Are you using the latest version of Pro Tools that is supposed to work with Snow Leopard?

73. Joost - December 8, 2009

Hello,
I’m having the same problem as Bianca: PT8 freezes at “Setting up Peripherals Initializing Machine Control” part. I’ve never had it working.

I have a macbook pro 10.6.1 and an iMac 2,8 gHz intel 10.6.1. At both computers the same problem.

What do you mean by trashing preferences and databases? And what is the problem if you have third party plug-ins installed? I’ve got the complete composer collection from east west. I don’t know if that makes any difference? And what version is supposed to work with Snow Leopard?

Thank you a lot in advance!! Because I’m quite desperate, cuz I need the whole system to be running for school..

Thank you!

74. ConnorSmith - December 8, 2009

@joost
Pro Tools saves databases and preferences on your hard drive – one reason is that you only have to create those prefs once, so subsequent loads are faster (i.e. – the first time you launch PT, it has to scan all your plug-ins and takes awhile. Subsequent launches are much quicker)

Occasionally, something goes awry with a pref, and you need to drag them to the trash and relaunch PT. The easiest way is to download the program from this site: http://www.jcdeshaies.com/ Just launch it and choose to trash your prefs.

I suspect that the East West stuff is causing problems too. Digi and EW software packages have a long history of “not playing nice”. I would move those instruments/plug-ins to the “Unused Plug-in Folder” on your drive and see if that works.

The latest version of PT (I believe maybe 8.0.3 or something similar) is supposed to work with Snow Leopard. You can check Digidesign.com for the latest update.

75. JetJ. - December 9, 2009

i had the same problem with the whole freezing at “structure” so i got frustrated and went out for my last resort and closed pro tools and before opening it again i went to the file location (“C:\Program Files\Common Files\Digidesign\DAE\Plug-Ins”) and manually deleted the structure plugin. I’d rather be without that plugin than without protools 8.

76. ConnorSmith - December 9, 2009

@JetJ
Did that work for you? Usually when it stalls out on the load, its a problem with preferences, ReWire, or a third party plug-in. At least in my experience, its been extremely rare that its not one of those three things.

77. JetJ. - December 9, 2009

Yes, it worked fine. I didn’t know why it did that also because i used to have it installed before with no problem then recently upgraded my hard drive and it started to do that. Oh well like I said I’d rather be without that plugin than without PT8.

78. barb - December 26, 2009

My husband got PT8 Mini for xmas and he trying to down load the software it seem to be taking a unusually long time. How long should it take to the initial install?

79. andy - December 29, 2009

Thank you for posting this. Saved me the trouble of scrapping my intall and restarting. I had lots of trouble installing on my Windows PC and after a year of difficulty got an iMac for Christmas. Installed 1st time and works perfectly. Thanks for telling me to wait. I was about to flip out again after all I’d been thru. Now I’m happy as can be. Thanks for posting this helpful hint on your site.

80. Desperate Pro Tools Addict - January 1, 2010

Hello. I just bought the new iMac i5 quad core, 4 gigs, 1TB HD. So i have an Mbox2. I installed PT8 LE, then i installed the PT8 LE update too 8.0.3. Soooo theres two things not letting me use it. 1st, the prog stops responding while loading up the plugins at the startup, and it allways stops at the plugin Xpand!.dpm. 2nd, sometimes all of the plugins load, evrything goes smoothly, then once i try to start a new session, it doesnt even seem to load. Ive even tried to start a session and save it to the desktop, the folder shows up on the dekstop but protools does not load any mix or edit windows, freezes and then i have to force quit. I had let it sit for about 45 minutes once, and it still didnt load. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks and Happy New Years!! 2010!!!!

81. ConnorSmith - January 2, 2010

@barb
The Digidesign download servers aren’t exactly known for their blazing speed. It can take a LONG time…

@andy
Thanks for visiting – glad we could help

@DPTA
A few questions for you -
Have you trashed your preferences and databases?
Do you have any third-party plug-ins installed?
Have you repaired permissions on your hard drive?

82. wdinglis4 - January 2, 2010

I got a mBox mini with ProTools 8 in it and can’t get it to even start installing. I run a Windows XP Home SP3 machine. I see alot of people saying they get stuck at something called ’structure’, but my install just opens a small blank popup window with ‘Welcome to Pro Tools 8′ in the title bar and then nothing. If I ‘explore’ the dvd’s folders I see a background.bmp file, however if I try to view this bmp image Explorer stops responding and I have to close the window. Does this sound like a simple damaged disc to you all? I guess all I can do is call digidesign support on Monday and see what they can do to help…

83. Desperate Pro Tools Addict - January 3, 2010

@ConnorSmith
Thanks for the help, i guess i had something wrong with my installed apple software. after a fresh install and fresh protools install, i had got it working fine. thanks alot. this site is exactly what people in need, need!

I have Pro Tools 8 LE, and an Mbox 2 Micro. I just installed Windows 7 64 bit. I downloaded the new 64 bit drivers from Digi, and the new update. However, I can;t get the install from the 8.0 disk to work, so I can’t even get to the step where I do the update. I run as Admin , under Vista SP2 compatibility, and I’ve let it go all night even. A lot of forums have said you should uninstall IE8, which I did, as well as all of the Vista optimizations for PT 8. I am running the installation setup as Administrator and in Vista SP 2 Compatibility mode. It keeps hanging up on “Installing Digidesign Hardware Drivers” , which I have read can take up to a half hour , but I literally left it all night , with no success. If anyone has had any success I would appreciate any tips. Here are my basic specs:

Intel 2 Quad Core CPU
2.67 Ghz , 5GB RAM
Windows 7 x64

86. Q - January 7, 2010

I also cannot install the 8.0 installer from the disk just as Jay can’t It freezes in various places every time I try to install. I’ve also removed IE8 and am running the installer in Vista SP2 mode with Admin. I’m using Windows 7 x64.

Intel Core 2 Quad
2.3 GHz
4 GB DDR3
Mbox 2 Mini

87. Q - January 7, 2010

GOT IT WORKING! For Windows 7 x64 users, trying running the installer in Vista SP1 mode rather than 2. Worked like a charm!

88. ConnorSmith - January 8, 2010

@wdinglis4
Sounds like it could be that. Is this a clean (new) install of Pro Tools 8, or are you upgrading? I would email Digidesign.

@Chris
Do you have any third party plug-ins installed? Have you trashed your preferences and databases?

@Jay
Did you do a clean install of PT 8 (by uninstalling previous versions first)? If the problem persists, unfortunately I think you will need to email Digidesign directly. A lot of people are having this problem. Be sure to give them your full system specs, and hopefully they can shed some light on a solution.

EDIT – Jay, try taking Q’s suggesting and installing in SP1.

@Q
Thanks! Great to know that something worked. This install problem has been a problem for quite some time now…

89. merter - January 11, 2010

I just got the mbox 2 micro with pro tools LE 8 and installed it to my mac book pro (version 10.5.8). It took almost 30 minutes because it freezed during the “Running pro tools creative collection installer script” message but, as mentioned above, patience was the solution. My problem is I can not launch pro tools..It freezes when it says “Loading Plug-ins DigiReWire.dpm” every time..I could not even got to the authorization page yet and it drives me crazy!! I’ve tried restarting the mac book,unplugging and plugging the mbox many many times.. I tried both usb inputs also.. Please help!!!!

90. Chris - January 12, 2010

@merter

try moving that plugin it’s frezzing on to your own unused plugins folder and then restarting, in theory it should bypass that plugin and start up correctly

@anyone having the same problem I was having previously

uninstalling the devious Internet Explorer 8 fixed the problem for me so I will have to recommend trying that

91. wdinglis4 - January 12, 2010

My issues was indeed a defective installation disc. You could shine a flashlight through the disc and see blank spots where the silver media wasn’t there – light shone straight through it! The seller I bought from said this was happening a lot latley and was kind enough to send me a replacement disc and I’m up and running now. Thanks!

92. merter - January 12, 2010

Thanks for the response..
The weird thing is I can not find the plugin… Where is my unused plugins folder? I had no problems installing Pro Tools to my Windows PC before but this Macbook Pro is new to me. Today i tired to install the software again after uninstalling it. Before the installing, I even used “Pro Tools Pref and Database Helper 2.3″ to clean all the pre Pro Tools versions I may have but I still have the same problem and this time it does not freeze that long, instead, ” ! The application Pro Tools LE quit unexpectedly.” box appears

93. merter - January 12, 2010

I also checked the installation disc..It looks fine. Could not see any blank spots or anything weird..

94. merter - January 12, 2010

Hi Chris, I DID IT !! :)
I finally found and moved that plugin to trash and it worked fine.. Then I removed that plugin to “plug-ins(unused) folder” and now I can run pro tools either with my “mbox2 pro” and “mbox2 micro” with no problem. I even updated to pro tools 8.0.1. THANKS A LOT !!

95. Chris - January 12, 2010

No problem merter, was at school and got the email on my but was in an area of bad service so was coing to tell you to make your own unused plugins folder when i got home… but yay you got it yourself! enjoy the new wonders of pt8!

96. Eric - January 16, 2010

Got Pro Tools 8 with an MBOX 2 Mini yesterday. I’m trying to run it on Windows xp professional. I’ve upgraded the ram to more than enough space, done all the other things the digidesign website said as far as unistalling ie 8, and still nothing. When I put the disk in I get the welcome to pro tools small window and just blank below that. Not sure what to do. please help.

97. wdinglis4 - January 16, 2010

@eric
I had the same issue, could be yours, as well. Look at response #91 above. Defective disc. I had to have my seller send me a replacement installation disc.

98. Eric - January 16, 2010

Disk looks good to me. Yours was popping up saying welcome to pro tools and then it wouldn’t go any further? I don’t know what else to do?

99. John Henry - January 20, 2010

Hey Guys. I hope you can help. We’re trying to load PT8 into a new Imac with 10.6. After we installed the PT8 disk we got error message 5000 and it stopped. So we downloaded the 8.03 upgrade (12 hours) but then it asked us to put some plug ins in a unused file. We clicked the default “no” button and now it’s been “Creating DAE objects” for about 3 hours. Sitting now at 65% complete but it doesn’t seem to be making any progress. Is any of this normal? How can we get this to work? Is the ilok key suppposed to be in the imac while we’re doing all this? Thank you

100. mert - January 20, 2010

I had similar problem while installing PT8 to my mac book pro but mine was freezing while trying to open the DigiReWire plug in. I moved that plugin to unused plugins folder and than it worked. It may be freezing while trying to load one or more of the plugins. You may try to move some of the plugins to unused plugin folder if it does not specifically say which plugin(s) cause the problem. Ilok has to be plugged in to use the plugins on it while launching PT,otherwise it will ask to authorize them.Hope this helps.

101. JBR - January 23, 2010

Hi Guys,

I have been having the same issues as many others here. Below you will find the specs of our system that we have been trying to install LE 8.0.3 Full Installer downloaded from Digi:

MAC Pro
Dual Quad Core Proc. @ 3.0Ghz
5 GB Ram
500 GB Drive
Clean Install 10.5.8
Nothing but OSX and all updates installed.
Digi Rack 003
Control 24

Tried downloading and installing LE 8. After several attempts at downloading the file from Digi we were getting the screen of death during the actual download “Kernel Panic”.

Then downloaded the file to an external drive from another MAC Machine. Copied file over to the MAC Pro outlined above begins installation and then we get the screen of death “Kernel Panic” at the very end of the installation.

We have tried over a dozen times with different Hard Drives, all with a clean fresh install and keep getting the same Screen of Death/”Kernel Panic” with either downloading the actual file from Digi, or at the end of the Installation.

Any ideas on what to do here? This is getting very frustrating and we are losing time and sessions due to this problem.

Thanks for your time and attention with this.

Regards…

Ahahah I searched the web for a clue, and a couple mins after finding this page, the installer ended well.

Have a nice day =)

106. DHS - February 3, 2010

hi Guys
i am new to ProTools and bought a Mbox2 with PT8 received at the start of this week. these are the problems i encountered and how i got around them.

First of all i am running a new MacBook OS x 10.5.8

1. After the installation of PT, when trying to load up you get the error 5000 message.
To Rectify, Uninstall PT and do it all over again.

2. After getting to the final segment of the PT load up the programme beachballs and becomes no responsive.
To Rectify, cancel the programme and restart the your computer, then when you are up and running, open up PT in a finder where you can view all files associated with the install you have made, you will find that there is a Software Update (or Check for Update) icon. Double click this. It will then detect if any updates are required. Turns out I needed PT8.01 for MAC OS, this took about one hour to download and as soon as it was done PT loaded up and i could complete the authorisation and registration process.

Patience is the key

Huge thanks to Connor for this website, before sorting the problem i was looking through this page during the day.

Hey what’s goin’ on? My pro tools 8 won’t install. It’ll start the install process and soon after it tells me to plug in my Mbox 2 mini, I get a message saying “Digidesign Mbox 2 firmware updater has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP. (With the options of “Continue anyway” or “Stop Installation”. I’m kinda lost on where to go from here…

108. Chris - February 3, 2010

continue anyways

109. mert - February 5, 2010

hi, I was trying to take a picture of my pro tools session (command, shift,3) but accidentally pressed something else I guess, then the plugins (most of them) became ghosty!! they are transparent. How can I go back to normal?? I tried to press all the possible buttons again (maybe not all of them) but nothing..

110. ConnorSmith - February 15, 2010

@All who are still having load problems:
Most of you have not given us specific information on your system (such as computer specs, OS, PT version, hardware, etc.). Please give us this so we will have a chance to help. Also, I would suggest to Windows users who are having perpetual problems to not only check your system against digidesign.com for compatibility information, but also to email Digi tech support directly.

@JRandom
Did you try “Continue Anyway”?

@Mert
Well, can you now take a picture of the greyed out plug-ins and send that to me? Are the tracks inactive, or is it just the plug-ins that are being affeted?

113. ConnorSmith - February 16, 2010

@Gareth
You’ll have to downgrade to sp1 likely – I’m not really a windows guy, but I would assume that means reinstalling the OS under sp1 or something similar.

@Anthony
Can’t help without more info about your system. (And unfortunately some people have had to wait longer than 10 hours on the install)

PT 8 M-Powered Installer keeps freezing when I install the Application Files part. As of right now it’s been running for 16 hours straight. I did all optimizations on the DigiDesign site and uninstalled IE8. PT installed on my Vista computer without having to do anything. I just don’t want to use PT on that computer. Any help will be appreciated. This is day three of trying and it’s really frustrating.

My Mac and pro tools are listed above. I cannot get pro tools launch properly. If I start the computer, I can open a new session (can’t open an old one, though). Once in pro tools, I get the spinning color wheel.

Then, I force quit. After, I can’t reopen pro tools. I get stuck at the loading screen, usually at “xpand.dpm.” Also, once this happens, I can’t even open other programs (itunes, quicktime, or even system preferences).

If I restart, I can operate all programs just fine. Once I try to launch pro tools, I get the same problems as described above.

I have not been able to record into pro tools yet. I have not been able to open any session besides a new one.

This is the first program I’ve installed on this machine since I got it two days ago

hello im having a problem. maybe you can HELP! i believe its just a simple error problem. ok i have a PC windows unltimate service pack 2. Processor: intel(R)core(TM) 2CPU 6400 @ 2.13Ghz 2.13Ghz
Memory: 2.00GB and system type 32bit operating system.
The problem is im unable to fully install PRO TOOLS 8 LE. when installing the software the pro tools dialoge comes up GREAT but the installshield wizard setup stops at about 95% . Then this error pops up with error code 0X80070017. I tried cleaning out the registry but that doesnt work either. Maybe you can HELP! i’d appreciate it. Oh and by the way the product is a mbox 2 but the PRO TOOLS 8 LE software IS the problem.

123. Robert - February 25, 2010

Adding on from above.
Half way through running the install It say an error ['-5005: 0x80070017] has occurred while running setup
???
It say to contact digidesign.
Im running

124. Robert - February 26, 2010

Yes my pro tools 8le would freeze @ about 10% in the installation. i let it sit for 3hrs and still nothing. but the weirdest thing that error ['-5005: 0x80070017] does not come up anymore which is great. i tried reinstalling it I got alittle farther but now another error popped up and this is what it says.
Feature transfer error:
Feature: application files
Component: controller-common
File :D :\Pro Tools Le Installer\data2.cab
Error: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)
If you can and know how to fix it Plz Help!
I also noticed it stops at the digidesign audio driver\data2.cab.
so i tried downloading the windows audio driver from digidesign and when i launched it kept flashing. Those are the 2 main problems im having. i just want to get pro tools up and running hope u can help.

I think there is an issue with the combination of 8.0.3, 10.6.2, the new 27inch imac i7, and the mbox family. The only users that I’m aware of who are running 8.0.3 on 10.6.2 FLAWLESSLY without weird tricks to launch and run a session are individuals who are not using the new 27 inch imac i7 and/or are not using the mbox family as the interface.

Hello. I have the Pro Tools Le package and I can not install it on my laptop, my computer is windows xp 2002 version Intel Pentium R
2.00Ghz, 1.60Ghz,0.99GB of RAM

I can play dvds on the computer and use any other disk but when I put the pro tools installation disk in… in makes some noises like the installation screen is going to come up…then it clicks three times and nothing happens, I am not quite sure what is wrong.. I tried pulling it uo manually as well and it shows as if nothing is in the d drive. However when I put the disc in my desktop computer the protools welcome comes up. Is there something disabled from my computer that I need to enable to use this disc?

129. Sam Forencich - March 2, 2010

If you are having installtions issue on PT 8 LE and are getting an error with “cyclic redundancy check” in it you have a bad installation disc. I just purchased an Mbox 2 mini and had this problem. You will need to call digidesign tech support and they will email you a link to download a good installation copy. You will get many warnings that the product needs to be registered in order to get support, but it’s not a problem in this particular instance. The process is a pain but it did install correctly – FINALLY!

130. Bart - March 2, 2010

Thank you ! I almost restarted whole process ! I was patience but I couldn’t believe that my brand new iMac i7 got problems with such long instalation…

Hi,

I have a brand new Macbook Pro, dual 3,06 Ghz, 8GB ram 15″ with OSX 10.6.2.

I have run Pro Tools 8.01 perfectly, but to get rid of yellow structure I tried to update to 8.03. It froze at running application scripts. I uninstalled, tried to redo with PT8 dvd in, still freezes.

I have deleted all prefs etc, still freezes. What to do?

did you make sure your ilok was in properly while it runs through the plugins for the first time?

133. Max - March 4, 2010

Hi Chris,

I am trying with both Mbox Mini and iLok key in atm, but I don’t think it gets that far in the process at all. I click ok for all steps, and when it begins the installation step, by running the install script Application Files, this is where nothing more happens.

134. SOLUTION GUY - March 4, 2010

SOLUTION ATTEMPT:

I have set up a home studio for a friend and have had 3 days of frustration because of the hang ups during install, and the constant freezes during recording. His computer specs were:

Gateway i3 Processor
1 TB hard drive
6 gigs Ram

AFTER TROUBLESHOOTING EVERY IDEA I HAD, I TOOK OUT 2 GIGS OF RAM LEAVING HIM 4 GIGS OF RAM. THEN I INSTALLED AND RAN PROTOOLS AND HAVENT HAD A PROBLEM SINCE.

Therefore, being that after 64-bit isnt all that stable i had installed 32-bit windows 7. And 32-bit cannot see past 4 gigs. After 3 days of constant straining, i took out 2 gigs and pro tools has not frozen in 2 months.

135. Vikas Srivastava - March 5, 2010

download/update 8.03. DON’T DO WHAT DIDGI SAYS ABOUT STRUCTURE.dpm. Instead, let the update replace your structure file. you can save the original structure.dpm if you want. not sure if you’ll need it later. peace.

Your drive may be too slow or fragmented, or a firewire drive could be having trouble due to the extra firewire bandwidth or CPU load.” I was just wondering if there was any way to fix this problem?

155. Rob - April 14, 2010

That’s it. Patience is the key. I’ve installed tools on many computers and macs and at the end of the installation (or sometimes randomly throughout) it will stall for a good 10-30mins, then go on to finish. Strange problem, but very common.

My computer randomly restarts when the “install creative collection” message comes on, and when it comes back on, it says that windows closed unexpectedly.

162. Ron C - May 9, 2010

Ok I’ve been dealing with this for weeks. I bought protools m-powered 8 for my studio, I already had a M-Audio Firewire Solo. Every time I try to install it sits at “installing drivers” which is right in the beginning of the install. I’ve waited for hours and days to no luck. If I cancel the install and try again the installation completes breezing thru the “installing drivers” part and asks me to restart the computer. when i say yes, a windows box pops up stating I have to cancel a program to shut down the computer, This program is listed as “digidesign audio drivers” and the process is named as setup. Now I’ve also sat for hours and days to see if the program would just complete itself and reboot but never does. Now when I do stop this and restart the computer before windows loads completely a black command box screen pops up and behind that is a small box saying “registering dgimidi services” I also have let this sit and nothing changes i end up having to restart again. Now Protools is on my computer in stalled but will not open up at all it doesnt even pop up at the bottom bar. I have the CD for Pro-tools and I have tried from cd and have copied everything from disk and put on computer and tried that way. any help?

Hi

I just bought myself the new upgraded Mac Book Pro from a danish music store and a an M-box 2 mini with pro tools from a the German web store Thomann. I’ve installed Pro tools, restarted the computer, plugged in the m-box, but when I try to launch Pro Tools a window with “error #-500, unknown error” keeps on popping up 10 times and then it freezes (for hours). I would have expected a window where I could write my DIGI-code??

Any idea what might have went wrong?

164. Maja Gry - May 11, 2010

Oh, and it’s error #-5000.

On another webpage I found a guy saying, you should install an “ilok” and now it launches differently, but it still won’t let me write my DIGI-code and freezes after some time… again.

I have had a problem installing the Protoolz LE 8 on my Sahara Laptop. I bought the software & minisound card last year June 2009. 172. Steph - May 28, 2010

I got the Fast Track Pro in this software, and I’ve tried at least 3 or 4 times to install it, but every time it has frozen and my computer and never gets to the installation. I’ve had it for about 3 weeks, but can’t get it to work or install. One of the times I even sat there for at least 30 minutes moving my finger around the track pad to make sure it didn’t freeze, and also made sure no other program was running, but it froze and stalled anyway. I don’t have many GBs left on my computer, so I thought that might be a problem, but not sure… any suggestions?? Thanks!
P.S. Has anyone had any success?? looking over these comments again, it doesn’t look like anyone’s has worked… anywho. if any of you guys have an input, it would be much appreciated!!!

173. Kinfolk Music Group - May 31, 2010

We have found the culprit…at least for Mac guys. I won’t bore anyone with specifics on how we found it, so here goes.

Go to Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Propellerhead Software/Rewire. Once you’ve found this location, take the Rewire devices and drag them to the trash. Also, locate the the Melodyne ReWire Device an trash it. If you still have problems, locate all of the remaining “ReWire” devices and “bundle” blocks in your Application Support folder and trash them.

Disclaimer: We don’t use Rewire in our studio. If you do, I do not know how this will affect your ReWire capabilities.

Feel free to contact us at info@kinfolkmusicgroup.com

Good luck from all of us at Kinfolk Music Group.

I just got the m-audio usb fast track interface and the pro tools m-powered essential 8 software. And after trying 6 times to load the dvd it stalls every time. It finally stop on the 7th try but nothing showed if it had installed properly. I clicked the program and it shows it’s starting and just before it load it crashes. Nothing shows on the screen and I get a message saying “Pro Tools M-Powered Essential quit unexpectedly.”( Yes I have a mac) So I’ve tried reloading the dvd and now the drive won’t even recognize it. It seems all the files show up in the finder but still nothing. What is the problem?

Comment # 2 >

The exact same thing just happened to me!
I was waiting and waiting and waiting… absolutely sure it had frozen.
The moment I booted Safari, googled the problem and loaded this page, the install completed.

That is really weird!

188. joe schmoe - July 17, 2010

I have pt 7. 4 m-powered and a friend has pt8 le with the digi m-box. I tried loading the Creative Collection files onto my pc from his pc. the files are there but when i try to load onto an instrument track, it says “please locate the content file “xpand2.big”. or vice versa when loading the others. i know it will probably work because when i look in the xpand folder, i see a number of other folders inside. when i open the others ,…. mini grand, xpand, or boom, they only have one “BIG” file and those are showing a protools emblem on them. dont know why. but im thinking theres a way to open it up on 7.4 to make it work. i read somwhere that you can load up projects from pt8 into pt7.4, so i figured that maybe the pluging would work too. all of the AIR plugs work. but im having the issues with the beforementioned. thanx for any advice or help.

Ha!. Just as I pulled up this page on another computer, it said the installation was complete. Just wait it out and you should be fine. Took about 15mins to complete that last step (the “about 1 minute” is misleading).

Recently (2 weeks ago) bought an MBP 15″, i7, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD, 2.66

Had Pro Tools Le 7.4 for my old iBook G4 an have an MBox 2.

Downloaded the PT8.0.3 from the Avid site and installed it no problem.
When I open the program, it freezes on the “Xpand!” section.
Have not been able to enter authorization code either.

Followed some advice listed here….repaired permissions, trashed some preferences/databases (not the wrong ones I hope!).

Same problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

This sucks.

Was planning on recording something next week.

201. curtis - September 8, 2010

Oh yeah….when I re-start and open Pro-Tools, it loads and gets to the authorization section and then freezes there (beachball of death rears its head again).

I’m beginning to feel like a pro tool.

I don’t know how…but all is working now.
Maybe took a bit of time for everything to “sink in”.
Let’s hope no glitches later.
