Hey

I’m running Pro Tools 8 on a mac pro 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon with 3GB of Ram, on OS X 10.5.5 and its running pretty smoothly, I’m just mixing of a radio show now. The only slight annoying problem I’m experiencing is an audio glitch every so often where a faint fuzzy sound drops in, it seems to happen when the disk meter goes above 0% on the system usage window. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions on what it might be and how I can fix it would be greatly appreciated.

2. Paul - December 29, 2008

I’ve had some tracks go a little nuts on me once in a while, they make crazy loud digital distortion for no reason at all. It’s fixed by just restarting protools. Some times, when i’m using the loop tool on midi regions, the middle goes missing from the region. I expect this all to be fixed rather soon with the new cs update. It shouldn’t be too long in coming. Digi released cs updates very often with 7.4. The last one was #8 so #1 for version 8 shouldn’t be too far away.

3. ConnorSmith - December 29, 2008

Hmm – I haven’t been able to get any of those bugs to happen on my system.

However, I have heard in other forums that some people are experiencing the “random noise” situation fairly often. From what I’ve seen, its happening most often with the MBox line.

(What interfaces are you using?)

4. geoffgeezy - December 30, 2008

Pro tools 8 doesn’t recognize my SSL Wave Rtas plugs and it crashes when I run logic with leopard

5. Emlyn Lucas - December 30, 2008

(What interfaces are you using?)

Hey I’m using an M-Audio 410. I’m thinking that m-audio might need to release a new driver for that model, maybe thats why its spitting out the random noise. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one experiencing it, although it does suck.

My friend is running and Mbox mini with protools 8 and he said its running fine?? I’m going to try and delete all my trial plugins cause they can sometimes make weird noises.

Fingers crossed for a cs update soon.

6. ConnorSmith - January 1, 2009

Geoff –
What version of Leopard are you using? Did you do a clean uninstall of 7.4.2 before upgrading to 8 (if you upgraded)

Also what computer? (I should be able to figure this one out, I have mine up and running)

Emlyn -
Hmm.. yeah. If you have a lot of spare time on your hands… I would uninstall and reinstall PT and see what that does. Make sure you don’t have any incompatible plug-ins installed (they don’t have to be used in a session to cause a problem. Just having them installed can mess things up).
I know other people are having a similar problem, I bet Digidesign et. al. figure it out soon.

7. jaime - January 5, 2009

when i open pro tools and open the file or song i’m working on there’s no volume, it has happen a few times now, i used to close the song quit pro tools and turn off the m audio mixer, and restart everything and in the beginning it used to work and i would get volume in my songs but lately it takes up to 20 minutes before i get any volume at all. it seems like something needs to warm up.

8. ConnorSmith - January 5, 2009

@Jaime
(Need a little more info from you; things like what version of Pro Tools, what operating system, what interface)

Also, is your output fader (such as a master fader) showing audio going out of your main outputs?

9. Mathew - January 23, 2009

I too feel a glitch sound and some times no sound … after restaring it fix

10. Mack - January 25, 2009

my system is cashing alot ., i did a uninstall and i took all the non digi plugins out . i’ve played with all the buffer settings and still alot of crashing. its almost impossible to run a session. I was thinking it was 10.5..6 but some people or not having a issue with it

mack book pro 2.66 4GB
10.5.6

11. Radek S. - January 25, 2009

Hey, you should check whether MIDI data is reflected in Score Editor properly on your systems. On mine (LE running on MacBookPro) there are “slight” differences. For instance a 1/8 note in MIDI Editor sometimes is shown as a 1/4 note in Score Editor.

12. Dustin - January 25, 2009

I just downloaded pro tools 8 on my macbook, and did the 10.5.6 upgrade. Now pro tools wont open at all. It says the application pro tools le quit unexpectedly. Anyone suggestions?

13. ConnorSmith - January 25, 2009

@Mack
I’m pretty sure PT8 is only technically qualified for 10.5.5 at this point. It could also be incompatible plug-ins. Try moving all non Digi plug-ins to the “unused” plug-in folder.

@Radek
I will check and get back to you

@Dustin
Again, I’m pretty sure its only technically qualified with 10.5.5 (I will double check). Did you do a clean uninstall of 7.4 first? Also try moving plug-ins like I suggested to Mack above.

14. Cooper Ompte - January 25, 2009

Hola,
I’m just wondering if Protools 7 files can be opened in 8 and vice versa. I’ll need to be working on stuff in Protools 7.4 for a few more months and I’ve been too busy to get 8 so I’m trying to see if I should wait to update or not.
Thanks

15. ConnorSmith - January 25, 2009

You can open v.7 files in v.8 no problem.

To do the opposite, you will have to do a “Save As” or “Save a Copy In”, and there should be an option to save as a 7-compatible file.

Just a note: when you open 7 files in PT 8, the computer will have to redraw the waveforms (won’t take long on a decent computer).

16. Emlyn Lucas - January 26, 2009

Hey Everyone, thanks heaps for your help. PT8 is still having all the bugs ironed out it appears, I’m running PT8 on my mac pro 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon with 3GB of Ram, on OS X 10.5.6, and I’ve worked out that by reducing the disk buffer size a little bit PT8 runs quite well and I’m not experiencing any audio drop outs now, So maybe give that a shot and see if that helps stop the audio drop outs you might be experiencing.

17. Pepe Luis - January 27, 2009

I’m Running PT8 HD3 TDM (PCIe) very very smoothly, Waves, SSL, Lots of Plug ins.
I’m using a G5 2.3mhz Dual, with 4.5GB of ram, on OS 10.5.6.
The only problem I’m having is with some Native Instruments.. very very bad..! it is impossible to use Kontakt, or Elektrik Piano.. It crashes all the time..! But I put the system to the maximum opening old mixes packed of inserts, multiples outputs, … runs perfect.

18. Elvis lopez - January 27, 2009

I’m having problems seeing, or finding my presets for the PT 8 plugins. I bought the upgrade from the digi store and when I first installed it, I had all my plugins, but after installing I did a clean system restore of my iMac, installed all my apps, even Pro tools 8, and now all my presets are gone. I liked using the presets as a starting point and tweaking them to my satisfaction…..can anyone help me? I just want my presets back!! I’ve tried uninstalling it, and installing it several times and still…no presets. If you got an answer please e-mail me.

19. andres - January 28, 2009

mac pro 3.1 dual xeon windows vista 64

It crashes some times when i use the instrument track, and when i close the session and open it again!

20. ConnorSmith - January 28, 2009

@Elvis
Are your normal Pro Tools presets gone, or are you referring to presets that you previously saved?

@Andres
This slightly hijacks your question, but why are you running PT on the Vista side rather than the Mac side?

21. Elvis lopez - January 28, 2009

Im referring to the presets that come with PT 8. As a matter of fact when I think about it, I’ve never had any presets. Thats why I was excited about seeing that they had some. Before hand, the only presets I had were the ones I had set up. Logic for instance has different presets for its gates, eq’s, and compressors. Do you understand now? When I installed PT 8 for the first time I had the presets installed, but after resetting my system and re-installing it they have gone missing. Please help me if possible.

22. ConnorSmith - January 28, 2009

@Elvis

Go to Library>Application Support>Digidesign>Plug-in Settings

Look in the folders inside and see if there are any presets in there. (Should be something like .tfx files, not on my PT computer right now)

If they aren’t in there, it should be an easy fix, let me know.

23. Elvis lopez - January 29, 2009

AWESOME!!! You are the best!!! You’ve been such a great help! Anyway I can get you to help me put together a template for recording vocals only?? let me know buddy, and I do appreciate your help, and the time. Thanks a lot.

-//Elvis

24. ConnorSmith - January 29, 2009

^^sorry, confused at your response.

Are the plug-in settings in there? Is the problem fixed?
What do you mean by a “template for recording vocals”?

word
C

25. Elvis lopez - January 29, 2009

Yes, After I pulled up PT, I pulled up a compressor, and located the presets where you said I should search, and bingo. I just did the same for the plugins I use the most.

As far as a template goes, I know somebody who uses a template he made up, and when I record there I can hear myself clearly through my headphones. I tried doing the same and every time I turn up the gain I distort. So any advice on how to build a template for recording vocals? I don’t mix any instruments, or record midi, I usually just pull up my beats, import them and record my vocals. Problem is, they are either too low, or too high.

I record through the Mbox 2 Pro, iMac 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 gigs of ram. My mic is a Blue Bluebird. I’m just giving you the details because i think the system is decent, but for some reason vocals just sound bad. Any advice???

26. ConnorSmith - January 29, 2009

Well, first I’d suggest that if you can’t hear your vocals over the music bed, then turn the beat down (rather than turning you up).

You should set the preamp gain so that at your loudest, you still have a few dB (maybe 4-6) of headroom before clipping.

I’m assuming the template your friend uses is just some EQ and perhaps a compressor that he inserts into the track. (Fairly standard techniques, like cutting some low mids and boosting the highs a bit. Compressor around 4:1, med/fast attack with med/slow release, few dB of gain reduction).

I would record some vocals, insert an EQ and a compressor, and mess around with some settings until you get the voice sounding good. But, I would still recommend turning down the beat while tracking.

27. Elvis lopez - January 29, 2009

Got it. I use a Presonus Tubpre and thats set up kinda to a low setting. I am going to try doing what you said, should I insert the plugins directly to the channel track, or send them through an aux? I think the guy I know does it through an Aux channel..whats the best option? Let me know, and again, thanks for your time!

-//Elvis

28. ConnorSmith - January 29, 2009

I would put them on the audio track, rather than recording through an aux.

If you print through an Aux, then the effects will be printed “to tape” (aka – on the track, can’t change it). If you insert the plugs onto the audio track, you will still hear their effects, but the audio going to disk is not affected, thus giving you more control later.

This isn’t to say that your friend is wrong, its just preference and style.

29. Elvis lopez - January 29, 2009

Okay, well thank you for the advice and your time. It has been much appreciated.

-//Elvis

30. Mack - January 30, 2009

how many virtual instruments should i be able to run on PT8 ? i have a mackbook pro 2.66 4gb 10.5.6

31. ConnorSmith - January 30, 2009

@Mack

That is pretty hard (nay, impossible) to answer.

Depends on a huge number of things, like:
- are you using a separate drive for the VI libraries?
- a different separate drive for audio, and one for Pro Tools?
- Which instruments? Samplers? Synths?
- How many audio tracks in addition? Plug-ins?
- Is this for tracking (i.e. low buffer) or mix (i.e. high buffer)?

The MacBook Pros are good computers, and can take some pretty heavy use, but it all depends on the above^^

32. Mack - January 30, 2009

ive been getting alot of crashes and im not sure if im over working my computer. Right now all im using are PT8 plugins and battery 3.
-The VI’s are on my laptop
- i use a separate drive for my audio
- i use sampler VI’s mostly (battery,xpand)
- mostly tracking

I didnt have a problem with abelton live and VI’s but with PT8 i do

33. ConnorSmith - January 30, 2009

@Mack

I’d bet more than a dollar that it is likely a problem with Battery. Native Instruments and Digidesign don’t often play nicely for awhile after a new release.

Try moving Battery (unused plug-ins folder). See how your performance is then.

34. Omar - February 4, 2009

I’m having problem recording in Pro tool 8 during my recording it stops and says “access violation, could not read location” and the freeze up.

35. ConnorSmith - February 4, 2009

@Omar
Can you give us some more info? (Computer, specs, make, model, interface, OS version, external drive?, any 3rd party plug-ins)??

36. Dorsey WRIGHT - February 6, 2009

I just installed pro-tools 8 and it stops during start up with message “the appication pro tools m-powered quit unexpectedly”. I have re-installed pro tools and I get the same massage, please help.

m-audio firewire 2626
mac os x 10.5.6 2×3 ghz dual-core intel xeon
2gb 667mhz ddr2 fb-dimm

37. ConnorSmith - February 6, 2009

@Dorsey

Couple things
- Did you do a clean install of version 8 (aka, uninstall previous version first)?
- What (if any) third party plug-ins are you running?
- Also check the software/drivers associated with the 2626

Finally, although many are having success with 10.5.6, technically PT8 is only qualified on 10.5.5

38. Dorsey WRIGHT - February 6, 2009

Hey Connor

I removed all the plug in from the digidesign folder to a folder on my desk top (don’t want to trash plugs) and now pt8 starts up and runs, no probs. what could be wrong with the plug ins that came with the instal disk? I’ll go thru re-installing them one by one (if I have to) to see which one’s cause it to quit unexpectedly.

39. Dorsey WRIGHT - February 6, 2009

Oh sorry yes did a clean install
no third party plugs
drivers for 2626 newest updated

thanks Connor

40. Dorsey WRIGHT - February 6, 2009

Hello ConnorSmith

I went thru all of the plug ins and found that the “DigiReWire.dpm was the one that caused PT8 to quit unexpectedly, onced it was removed the program runs well.

41. ConnorSmith - February 9, 2009

^^yeah, that’s been a problem in various PT setups for awhile, we had an article on it here:
http://thestudiofiles.com/?p=49

Sorry I didn’t think of that first!

42. mike - February 11, 2009

hi am new here i have a few questions wondering if anyone can help me.My name is Mike I have a lil studio set up back at my place and i have a few questions i was hoping u can help me with. I am having some trouble with mixing the vocals with a song am working on.

1) the vocals are dry and i am thinking of adding some reverb however when i try to do this(using the send/return channel) the send fader clips red, regardless of which level i set my meters. what do u think might be the problem here. would u be able to suggest a way for me to fix the reverb on the track without getting the red indicators.

2) when adding reverb to a hip hop vocals which of the settings should i focus more on, would u be able to give me a setting that i could go by.

3)this question has nothing to do with the vocals. I noticed that some people pan their aux channels, I was wondering wether u could tell me where and when u think this might be acceptable in the mix.

4) Also In my mix i have one drum loop sample from my imac, this sample consists of a hi hat, kick and snare, by it self it sounds good, i have never mixed sample drums ever, however i was wondering maybe u might have any suggestions as to

43. mike - February 11, 2009

follow up to question 4

wondering if any one might have any suggestions as to how i can mix the drum sample and make it sit well in the mix.

44. ConnorSmith - February 11, 2009

@Mike (I’ll answer each question individually with a number)

1) Can you take a screenshot of this and email it to me (my email is in the “About” tab at the top of our site)

2) Really impossible to give you a suggestion. Everything is based on context, so I would have to know the song. Very generally I would recommend starting with a shorter verb (say around 1 sec). Perhaps start with a plate verb or a small room. (Again, its impossible to say without context)

3) It is never not “acceptable”, its just a matter of what sounds good and what doesn’t. You’ll have to dial up some settings, pan things around, and see if its helping or hurting the sound

4) Once again, it completely depends on the song/mix

As sort of a general response -
A lot of audio production is solely determined by what sounds right for the song. Yes, there are some generalities of what is “right” and “wrong”, but even those rules are broken a thousand times per day, simply because in that context, it sounded good.

I would encourage you to not go “by the book” always, and just try things out and see how they sound. At worst, it won’t sound how you’d like, and you’ll have to go back into your DAW and change it back. In our world of non-destructive editing and effects, we can learn from our mistakes without huge consequences.

Also, if you’d like, feel free to send me mp3’s (via email) of the songs and I can give you more specific suggestions.

45. Mike - February 12, 2009

thank you CONNOR SMITH, u kinda confirmed what some other producers have been saying about the stuff just sounding right to your ears and experimenting. the funny thing was last night i added a new dimension(piano rhythm track) to the track and it gave the vocal and the whole song a different feel. ill send the song as soon as i can however just so u might have an idea it is an hip hop track with two rhythm tracks a bass and a drum sample. One rhythm flows on through out the song and the other comes in and out. I guess u can sort of compare it to NEW YORK STATE OF MIND on the ILLMATIC ALBUM by Nas. I compare it to this because the vocal delivery goes on non stop until it hits the chorus, and the song doesnt comprise of too many tracks. Does this help? ANYWAY THANKS FOR THE ADVICE ILL APPERRECIATE ANY TIP U CAN GIVE ME THOUGH ON WORKING THE RHYTHM TRACKs SO THEY CAN BOTH FLOW WELL IN THE SONG AT THE SAME TIME STILL FEEL SPACEY

46. John - February 16, 2009

hi my name is John.
1.just a quick question on audio wavelength height.
I have noticed when I am using a live instrument (Guitar etc) while recording it is showing a big black block which is caused by audio track height been at full capacity, obviously all I need to do is turn the track height down but for some reason everytime i open a new audio track it does this.
on my last pro tools i turned it to a view I was happy with and it stayed like that and have toggled with the preferences and no luck.
not sure if this is a glitch or that pro tools 8 has moved this setting
somewhere else in the program?

2. also when I decrease the track size all the other audio tracks do the same, i cannot do it individually for some reason?

any help would be great

thanks
John

47. ConnorSmith - February 16, 2009

@John

I’m not at my PT rig right now, but I’m pretty sure if you hit:

Ctrl+Opt+Command+[

(All three modifier keys + [ )

That will resize the waveform zoom to its normal level.

48. Prets - February 19, 2009

hey Folks …..

have talked to numerous people about this …and I’ve tried a bunch of different things that have fixed this problem for others ….ie (deleting preferences, trashing the digidesign database folder , I’ve even trashed all plugins in an effort to see if there was any corruption going on) all has failed …..

Basically I’ll launch pro tools m-powered 8 and get as far as putting a title on my session …at which point I’ll hit save ….and I get the “pro tools m-powered has quit unexpectedly window” every single time

(using an Imac- os X 10.5.6 and the profire 2626 as my interface ….)

anyways …I really have no idea what’s going on

49. ConnorSmith - February 19, 2009

Here are my first thoughts -

1) Pro Tools is technically only fully compatible with 10.5.5, you are running 10.5.6. While many people are running successfully, this could be a problem.

2) It could be a ProFire 2626 driver issue, are you using the latest driver? (Again, this driver could be only “good” with 10.5.5, I’m not familiar with it, so I can’t say for sure)

3) What plug-ins are you running? Any third party? Incompatible plug-ins could be crashing the program. Move any problem plug-ins to the Unused Plug-in Folder.

4) Also could be a ReWire problem. Try this if the other 3 suggestions don’t help http://thestudiofiles.com/?p=49

50. Prets - February 19, 2009

Yeah I went to the m-audio site last night and updated the driver …however I only did so cause I was having the same problem without having updated the driver

I haven’t got around to installing any 3rd party plugins yet either …..just been wanting to get protools up and running before I start getting into that …..

just read ..and believe it or not I haven;t tried this …..but apparently this problem will happen if there’s a bad connection to the interface …..

I’ll have to try it …..I guess it’s possible …just didn;t think of it as everything is new

I’ll look further into the 10.5.5 capatibility issue as well

thanks a lot

51. ConnorSmith - February 19, 2009

Yeah, check the firewire cable (shorter is better here).

Try the ReWire trick, although I don’t think its that (even just move to a different directory, out of the plug-ins folder)

52. Rene van der Wouden - February 21, 2009

I have the same system, but them 6,5 Gb of RAM as Pepe Luis and experience the same problem with Native Instruments. I can’t do a project with 6 audio tracks, FM8 and Massive. It crashes and says increase your buffer etc.. while my total CPU usage is about 21 %..

53. ConnorSmith - February 21, 2009

@Rene

Its got to be an incompatible with either those instruments or another plug-in. Move third party plug-ins to the Unused Plug-ins Folder and see if your performance is improved. Native Instrument stuff and Pro Tools often don’t play nice for quite awhile after an upgrade…

54. John Rivers - February 22, 2009

Hi Guys

I’ve had a bit of a nightmare with 10.5.6 and PT 8. It seemed to work OK when I first installed although not reall quite right. Then on friday Protools wouldn’t quit and force quit caused the Mac to hang so a had to force power off. I’ve tried everything including re-installing the Mac OS, (and a clean install of PT8 and trying it without any plugs and the Rewire removal!). I now think my best bet is to go back to 10.5.5 if I can buy a installer DVD. Has anyone done this? Any hints. Apple help were next to usleless on this and kept saying you can’t go back.
Many thanks
John @ Woodbine

55. ConnorSmith - February 22, 2009

Hmm – that seems pretty odd.

Which Mac are you using (and specs)?

10.5.5 is your best bet for safety, but you shouldn’t be having those giant problems.

Also, just to rule other things out, is Pro Tools the only program that your computer is having a problem with?

56. John Rivers - February 22, 2009

Hi Cinnor
It’s an Intel quad G5 and after 10.5.6 the whole Mac didn’t ‘feel right’ Mail ceased to work, (common apparently). Drives took for ever to mount / dismount…..generally crap.
Anyway, today I bought a full installer 10.5.4 then upgraded with combo 10.5.5, re-installed PT and all is perfect!
I tried everything I know with 10.5.6 and think I can safely say – it’s a dog!!
Best

John

57. ConnorSmith - February 22, 2009

Thanks for the update John.

Its nice to have someone with confirmed problems in 10.5.6 so we can concretely advise people to stick with 10.5.5

58. Shabz - February 23, 2009

I’m having this big problem with Pro tools 8 When ever i’m recording it keeps giving me these errors and freezes on me. Please Check out the images and see if you can help me with my problem. Please.

Please help me i have a album working on and this keep bugging me out.

60. ConnorSmith - February 23, 2009

@Shabz

Please let us know the following information, or else its near impossible to help -
1) Computer specs, OS version, etc.
2) Which hard drive are you recording to?
3) Any third party plug-ins? VIs?

If you are getting assertion errors, its likely related to a hard drive error, but let me know the above^^ and I can help in a more specific way.

61. John Rivers - February 23, 2009

Hi Conner

Thought the following specifics re: PT8 / 10.5.6 may help;
PT froze on opening at last screen (No satellite video).
Couldn’t force quit, couldn’t shut off Mac.
Seemed to be a clash with audio as once I’d set audio prefs so I could use Toast / Jam through interface, Mac speech would cause freeze.
Huge CPU spikes on sessions previously fine.
Opening, saving all very slow
Cheers
John

62. Richard Mc - February 23, 2009

Hi folks ….
I’m just trying to install PT8 on my 15″Powerbook 1.5Ghz (2004)ish
I reformatted the drive and installed OSX10.5.6 …. Trouble is that the installation grinds to a halt at the point where it says ‘Running Pro Tools Creative collection Installer Script’ …

Any ideas/ help greatly appreciated

Regards
Rich

63. ConnorSmith - February 23, 2009

@Richard –

According to Digi’s site (recently), Pro Tools should work with 10.5.6.

When you install, if you have the option, I would just install the PT software and nothing else to start; are you doing this?

How much RAM does your computer have? There is a pretty decent RAM requirement for Pro Tools (I think its either 1 or 2 gigs off the top of my head)

64. Richard Mc - February 23, 2009

Hi Connor …
THanks for that brother … I finally managed to get it to install now all i need is a good book to read whilst each plug-in loads :v/ …. i think i need a new laptop!? Cheers anyway
Regards
Richard

65. ConnorSmith - February 23, 2009

Careful with any third party plugs/VIs – if you get problems now once you install them, I would check them first.

(Even the Digi VIs need an update for v.8, available on Digidesign.com)

66. Richard Mc - February 24, 2009

Ahhh …. It was the Instruments i wanted to use!!
Basically, I’ve got my main set up that i don’t want to upgrade until i’m 100% sure about the new version … so i’m installing it on my laptop whilst i work out the bugs and also as a stand alone sound module/ drum machine etc …. I’ll try the update see if that works.
Cheers again Connor.

Rich

67. Richard Mc - February 24, 2009

Hmmmm struggling to fing the update …. is it the PT8.0.cs1 update?
Could i be a pain and ask you to post me a link brother!?

Cheers Connor

@Shabz
My first guess would be move the Nomad plug-ins to the Unused Plug-ins folder. Also make sure your Waves is up to date. I would also update to the latest cs (see the link above).

Lately, it seems90% of buffer problems/glitches are plug-in related.

I thought in one of your pictures I saw an assertion error. While that can be a number of things, it can be a drive problem, so I would format your recording drive as well. Finally, check Digidesign.com to make sure your firewire set is compatible.

Connor you’re a legend cheers mate ;v)

71. ConnorSmith - February 25, 2009

No problem! Hope everything is working for you.

72. kevib - February 26, 2009

Hey guys

I have had pro tools 8 for a while now but haven’t managed to open it once yet.At first whenever i tried to open it,it said it could not locate any digidesign hardware,even though my mbox 2 is plugged in and running..now it just says pro tools has quit unexpectedly every time it starts loading..i was using le 7.4.2 and that was working fine.Im using a macbook pro,with leopard 10.5.5.I have tried installing the audio driver separately,but still no luck.Any suggestions would be very appreciated.
Cheers
Kevin

73. ConnorSmith - February 26, 2009

@kevib

Did you do a complete uninstall of PT 7 before installing 8?
I would also try just trashing prefs and doing general maintenance (that has a good shot of fixing it)

74. kevib - February 27, 2009

Il try do a clean uninstall of pt 7 now and let you know.Thanks

75. kevib - February 27, 2009

Hey connor,its still saying ‘unable to locate digidesign hardware’ when i try start up PT 8.Im all out of ideas.

76. ConnorSmith - February 27, 2009

This is a simple one, but are you sure the cord connecting your MBox to the computer isn’t bad?

I would try another (shorter) cable.

77. kevib - February 28, 2009

Yea im using the cable that came with the mbox 2, i also tried some other USB cables that i have and still no luck

78. ConnorSmith - February 28, 2009

I guess at this point I would trash ALL of the pro tools prefs, repair permissions, etc. and see if that does anything.

If not, I would probably reinstall Leopard (wipe and install), install another fresh copy of PT, and see what that does.

If it doesn’t work then, perhaps something is wrong with your MBox, because that’s just odd.

79. kevib - March 2, 2009

Ok il give those suggestions a try,it is really odd and im also thinking it might be a problem with my mbox but i keep using 7.4 in the meantime and it’s working fine witch doesn’t really make to much sense,its only PT 8 that is giving problems.
Thanks alot for the help though connor.Il let you know if i get it working.
Cheers

Hi .. i’ve been using PT8 on my imac 2.8 2gb of ram with 10.5.6… sometimes when recording i get distorted audio kind of a fuzz…rarely happens but frustrates me cuz i have to record all over again… does it have to do with the 10.5.5, “” “” 5.6 compatibility thing?? or could i be doing something wrong?? please help.. it would be greatly appreciated.

81. Dr Dre - March 4, 2009

Quick question I am currently trying to add some slap delay on my vocal track using the send and return busses, but since i can only add so much before it starts clipping, i set my levels very low, my send level is at a 94 and my return 42.7. with this the funny thing happened, i was receiving signals from my send bus but non in the return bus, but at the same time i could here the effect on the vocals
My question here to you pro tools users is; is it ok to have my busses react in this manner even if though i am getting the effect i desired for my vocals. (pro tools 7.4)

82. Alex Lugo - March 6, 2009

well now i have a new problem… i re-installed everything on my mac..im using an imac core 2 dual with 2 gb of ram, i installed the 10.5.5 combo update.. and now my computer is crashing when i quit any application…i don’t know if this is because of pro tools (which i think it is) or something else… if some one could help it would be appreciated. thanks.

83. Joe Chase - March 7, 2009

Have had a few problems moving projects from one computer to another. Not all files are saved in the folders. Saving a copy didn’t fair well lost many of the edits and fades, even some of the midi shifted in time. Digidesign could not figure any reason for this to happen. We duplicated the problem twice. Some want to blame XP. Some wanted to blame the hard drive cash software.

Weird!

84. Pablo Vega - March 9, 2009

Hi, I send the PT8 HD2 midi click through a Midisport 2*4 interface to a Korg module, record it on an audio track and it is very very out of time, in an empty session with no CPU activity at all. I also have serious latency problems on sending tracks by different analog outputs of the 96 interface.
Besides, my Powercore plug-ins are not recognized by PT since 8.0, but all other VST plug-ins are o.k with Fxpansion wrapper.
Mac PPC dual 2.0 Ghz 3 Gb RAM. PT 8.0 HD2 with 96I/O.
Thanks in advance.

85. Sam - March 10, 2009

Hi
I have installed ProTools 8 on my Mac OS 10.5.5 Combo (1,8 second generation model M9454), but ProTools 8 quits all the time. So I updated my ProTools to 8.0cs2 but it still quits and my compter crashes immediately (asking to restart).
What should I do ?
Thank you for your reply.

86. ConnorSmith - March 10, 2009

Hi – sorry I’ve been out for awhile, I’ll try to answer multiple questions here.

@Dr. Dre – Clipping your channels is generally a bad thing, although the occasional “soft” clip isn’t the end of the world. I would encourage you to go for the sound you want, but adjust accordingly so that you don’t have distortion all over the place.

@Alex and Sam
I would trash your Pro Tools databases and Preferences and see where that gets you.

@ Pablo
Some of that latency is due to buffers and I/O. Since you are in HD, make sure you have the delay compensation engine turned on. I would uninstall and reinstall the wrapper for your Powercore plug-ins (and trash preferences) and see if it loads them

87. Alex Lugo - March 10, 2009

already tried that and gets worst cuz i can’t get to open pro tools…i get this weird long msg that doesn’t allows me to open pro tools and i have to reinstall it all over again…which leaves me at the begining, i have both of the updates..but still hasn’t fix anything, actually what im now getting is not just the distorted recordings but the playback too and it is really anoying…. using imac 2.8 core 2 dual 2 gb or ram…i don’t think it would be a matter of resources on my computer… so if anyone knows anything i would aprecciate it.

88. Rene Anton - March 10, 2009

this one is for sam with Protools Crashing at the start after the restart. I don’t know this will help but i had the same problem and i narrowed it down to to plugins which i had to remove from the plugin folder.

I removed the Stereo mixer.dpm and the Surround Mixer.dpm plugins and walla Protools went thru it’s course and opened up to it’s new preset template screen.

Hope it helps it worked for me , it was a little bit of a grind to figure out but maybe it can help someone else with the same problem . G4 powerbook with external drives leopard 10.5.6 .

89. ConnorSmith - March 10, 2009

@Alex
Quite a bummer… If it were me, (after I tried moving bad plug-ins out) I would wipe all my drives, reinstall Leopard, do a fresh install of PT8cs2 and see where that gets me…

90. Alex Lugo - March 10, 2009

well…i’ve done that too :S
i guess.. i’ll just hope for a third upgrade and hopefully that’ll solve the issue… if not i think i’ll say bye bye to PT for good… which i’d hate… but thanks for your help!

91. Elvis Lopez - March 12, 2009

Connor,

You were a big help before when I had an issue, and decided to come back here and reach out to you another time. I am having a hard time getting a good volume in my head set. The only time I can get a decent volume in my headsets is when my pre-amp is turned up pretty high and the problem is that my Mbox 2 keeps peaking hard. I will break down what I’m using and maybe you can help me get the right settings for the hardware I have. I also have just purchased my first compressor which is a new thing for me, and am having a hard time using it, or setting it up. All I usually do is record vocals, my beats come to me already mixed and bounced down, so all I need to do with my equipment is record my vocals. So here’s the list of the equipment i have, please if you can help me set them up properly.

1. Blue- Blue Bird Condenser Mic—-> That runs into—–>
2. ART-Tube MP Studio Pre amp—–> That runs into—–>
3. DBX- 266XL Compressor/Gate—-> That runs into—–>
4. Digi Design-Mbox 2 —–> Thats hooked up to my speakers.

I am using the Mbox 2 to run Logic Pro 8.
here are my Computers Specs:

Processor: iMac 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

I dunno if it’ll affect anything but the cable that is running out of my tube amp is an XLR to 1/4 inch thats running into the compressors input, the output from the compressor is XLR which is running a 1/4 inch jack into my Mbox’s Input 1.

I’ve included a link to a simple pic of the equipment:

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll132/orlando_lopez_gonzalez/Skillz/MySetUp.jpg

Thanks!!

92. ConnorSmith - March 12, 2009

Are you sure they aren’t balanced? Its usually not as easy to find XLRs that are wired as unbalanced. And yes, get balanced cabling.

As far as the volume goes, why not just turn up the volume on the output (aka turn up the headphone volume knob)? Your recording input level should hopefully never clip, you have plenty of headroom in 24 bit depth. If you can’t hear your voice over the beat, turn the beat down while you track.

For compressor settings, I wouldn’t hit it too hard on the way in. Maybe 2 or 3:1 ratio (could be higher), with not too fast attack and fairly slow release. Set the threshold for just a few dB at most of reduction. You can be more aggressive on the way in, but definitely for starters go for a light compression.

93. Joshie B - March 16, 2009

I’m having the problem with installation that Richard Mc had in #62 — installation stops just before end, during “installing creative collection installer scripts.” It says “about a minute” is left in install, then doesn’t make it past that point. Mc says he finally did manage to install PT8, but doesn’t say how! One key difference between his situation and mine: I’m trying to install on a new Macbook (aluminum). Please advise. Thanks.

94. Sam - March 16, 2009

hi
try this
1- before to install pro tools unstall and clean pro tools
2-unstall all plug in or save it in anothe disc
3- if you add mémory carte untall remove it and keep the original mémoiry
4-clean the folder (database )on you disk
5-now install pro tool and open a session test if every thing ok then you can add all your plug in and memoiry carte that remove before the instation.
sam

95. Joshie B - March 16, 2009

Okay, so I solved the “installing creative collection” problem, or rather it solved itself: the trick is to just let the installation keep running for as long as it takes and ignore the “about one minute left” message and the fact that the program appears crashed. Thanks for your suggestions though Sam.

NEW QUESTION:
Pro Tools recommends not using a USB port replicator for your M-Audio input device. It also requires (or at least strongly recommends) an external recording drive. And it demands a dongle. This is a problem for anyone using a new Macbook, because (lamely) these have only two USB ports, and no firewire ports. So if you plug your M-Audio device (Fast Track Pro in my case) into one, what do you plug into the other? If I plug in the recording drive, there is no place to put the dongle. So A) do I need the dongle if I have an M-Audio device plugged in? (the instructions hint yes, but are murky about this), B) is there some way to put the dongle on the tail and of a hard drive with 2 USB ports? C) how bad an idea is it to run a recording drive off a USB hub? D) if there’s no option, what is the best configuration, ie what SHOULD go on the hub if a hub is necessary? and E) is there really no way to run without the dongle? If Pro Tools requires more than 2 direct USB plug-ins, it’s not compatible with new Macbooks.

96. ConnorSmith - March 18, 2009

@joshie

EDIT – I missed the boat. Check Damon’s post below and my next one. :O

97. Damon Sink - March 20, 2009

Unfortunately, as joshie says, only the MB Pro has Firewire now. Your M-powered interface (such as an M-box) should act as the hw “dongle,” correct? Then you could run other USB devices, including a USB 2.0 audio drive from a powered hub on the second port.

Damon

98. ConnorSmith - March 20, 2009

Ah -

I missed that one… wow, really? Apple goofed.

Yeah, connect the interface directly to the computer and use a hub for the rest.

99. Joe - March 20, 2009

Hi,

New Pro Tools user. I have a macbook 2.4ghz w/4gb of memory, Mac OS X 10.5.6 and 320gb 7200 RPM drive. While I’m installing PT8, it hangs on “running pro tools creative collection installer script”

Any ideas here? I can’t auth it yet, so I can’t register it yet, so I can’t call digi yet. I have an email in to them…still waiting for a reply.

Thanks.

Joe

100. ConnorSmith - March 20, 2009

Hmm.

A few people have that problem. Hopefully Digi has answer. In the meantime, if you have time to kill -

(Don’t know if you did this or not, but) When I install/upgrade Pro Tools, I do an erase and install of the operating system and then immediately install Pro Tools. This helps minimize the chances of other factors hindering the PT install.

How long have you let it sit at that? I faintly remember one Pro Tools install that took quite a long time to get past a certain spot (although I can’t say for certain it was the latest version)

101. Joe - March 20, 2009

It’s been sitting for about 30 minutes several times. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled a few times too.

Erasing is not gonna work for me however. I have way too many files and 3rd party apps to reinstall. Plus out of principle, I shouldn’t have to wipe a drive to install PRO GRADE software.

any other ideas as to what it my be?

Joe

102. Joshie B - March 20, 2009

Joe — as I mention above, I had this problem, and after several tries of just leaving it installing for a LONG (approx hour) time, it installed fine.

103. Joe - March 20, 2009

Thanks for all the responses, this is a great forum!!

I’m trying to let it go for over an hour…I’ll check back then…

Disk 2 (Audio Loops and Samples) do I install it with an installer or drag and drop it into a HD or folder?

104. Joe - March 20, 2009

Success!!! I guess the 4th or 5th time is the charm!!!

Thanks…What am I suppose to do with disk 2 (audio loops)?

Joe

105. ConnorSmith - March 20, 2009

I would just drag it to a HD, but keep the contents organized so that you can easily find and import the loops if need be.

Yeah – it must have just needed more time. I remember mine taking a bit longer than I expected to install.

106. KK - March 20, 2009

Getting my PT 8 LE update, was something that I looked forward to as soon as I heard the release anouncement last year. Digidesign made It really easy i to download and install the software however, due to errors, and crushes, I have had to reinstall PT 8 LE on several occasions.

First, it was the issue with Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime errors which didn’t stop until, I deleted all my third party plugins and then reinstalled Pro Tools.

Most recently, I have started having a fatal error right after the loading is finished.

Now, I don’t know if its my computer, which is a recent brand new purchase only running pro tools and reason 4, Or if its an issue with the software. All I know is that I need a solution to this, because I don’t want to go back to using other software.

107. ConnorSmith - March 20, 2009

@KK

Can’t help without more information:
Specific computer specs (mobo, processor, memory, etc), which version and SP of windows?
Which PT interface? firewire card?
Which third party plug-ins? Did you do a clean install of PT?
8.0cs2 or just 8.0?

^^Let me know things like that, and I bet we can figure it out for you.

108. mike - March 24, 2009

Hi mr Connor i was hoping u could help me answer this question. I have a pro tools 7.4 and i notice that unlike the older versions the, 7.4 compressor and eq plug ins has a level called GR right next to the in and out level, this GR often responds with a yellow indicator. I was wondering whether u would be able to tell me of what significance this indicator is to my mix and when and what i should pay attention to whenever am using these plug ins.

109. ConnorSmith - March 24, 2009

@mike

(I’m pretty sure its not on the EQ, only on the compressor)
That stands for Gain Reduction. That meter will show you how hard the compressor is squishing down on the original signal.

A good thing to practice is to close your eyes and begin to lower the threshold of the compressor. Listen to how the compressor is squishing the audio, make a reference in your brain of what it sounds like. Then open your eyes and check the GR meter to see what the compressor is actually doing.

This way you can begin to get a more defined sense of what 2 dB of gain reduction versus 8 dB of gain reduction sounds like. (And of course, listening for differences in attack/release times and the shape of the knee are also very important)

110. mike - March 24, 2009

that helps mr connor but wat if the yellow light starts to show does this mean i have to be wary of anything.

111. ConnorSmith - March 24, 2009

@mike

I’m not really sure what you are asking.

The purpose of a compressor (usually) is to apply gain reduction. [Ed: on the loud parts, so that you can increase the volume of the not so loud parts :-) DS]
The yellow meter labeled “GR” is just showing you the amount of gain being reduced.

If its showing a lot of yellow, you are compressing the signal a lot (and therefore reducing the gain a lot).

Let me know if you still need help.

112. mike - March 25, 2009

thank u mr connor that helps a lot. have a good night.

113. mike - March 25, 2009

Hi mr connor i am thinking of getting new monitors in the 180-200$ range for my home studio. I just have a few questions i was hoping u would help me answer. what is the difference between active, reference, and passive monitors and what make might u suggest i get 4 a decent pair or single within this range. thank you enjoy your day and look forward to hearing from u.

114. ConnorSmith - March 25, 2009

@mike

What are you currently using for monitoring?

Honestly, you’ll be hard pressed to find anything worthwhile for under $200. I would say at a bare minimum to make it worth your while, you should go for Alesis M1’s or M-Audio BX5a
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/M1ActiveMkII/
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/BX5aDeluxe/

Those are quality monitors and sound pretty good for the price. Anything lower than that, and I don’t think its worth the money.

Active monitors (like those^^) have the amps integrated into the design. You don’t need an external amp, you can plug line level outputs right into them. Passive monitors will also require the purchase of a power amp.

115. Esben - March 25, 2009

Well hello..
I just got my Pro Tools LE 8 in the mail today and got through installing just fine. Afterwards I wanted to try running Reason 4 in my new PT with ReWire, but every time I select Reason as an instrument in an Audio track both programs chrashes. Can anybody help me?

116. ConnorSmith - March 25, 2009

@Esben

The Reason Rewire is supposed to be opened on an aux track, not on an audio track. That could be why its crashing.

Are you using the latest version of ReWire (I think it may be 4.0.1 or something to that extent)?

Are you using any other 3rd party plug-ins or control surfaces?

117. mike - March 25, 2009

thank you mr connor, i currently use a CREATIVE speaker that comes with a subwoofer(CREATIVE MP3 IPod makers?) any way i use these coupled with my head phones and occasionally trying my mixes on different systems, i think the speakers stress more of the high end, i guess wat i would be looking for would be something that projects the actual image of my mix so that when am done i can be pretty confident of what i have b4 even trying them out on different systems. i just havent spent anything on a studio monitor and since am working on a budget i dont want to end up regreting. Thank u for info ill be on the look out 4 those u recommended. thank u 4 your help.

118. Esben - March 25, 2009

I’m using a novation remote sl 61 keyboard to control reason. I’m running automap 3, reason 4 and pt le 8 on my macbook 2.16, 2gb memory.

How do I update ReWire? Can’t seem to find an “Update ReWire” button :S…

Tried using an aux track aswell. Same result…

119. ConnorSmith - March 25, 2009

I’m fairly certain that there is a problem with Automap/Reason/Pro tools. Uninstall automap and see if that does it.

If there are any updates to Reason or Rewire, you’d find them here:
http://www.propellerheads.se/download/

120. Esben - March 25, 2009

I used Automap/Reason/Pro Tools before I upgraded, but I tried uninstalling Automap – Didn’t change a thing.

The updater said I didn’t need to update ReWire since I’m running Reason 4.

I can open Reason while running PT, and Reason will run in slave mode, but as soon as I try an make it an insert in PT it crashes.

121. ConnorSmith - March 25, 2009

I searched on the DUC and found a few threads where people were having this problem. It seems that some people got it working by uninstalling automap, some didn’t.

At this point, I would either email Digidesign or start a thread on duc.digidesign.com

Perhaps Digi can help directly or shed any light on this bug.

122. Esben - March 25, 2009

Okay, I will figure something out. Thank you for helping…

123. JBergdorf - March 30, 2009

Hey everyone, I’m a fairly new user to pro-tools, but my problem is a confusing one. Occasionally when trying to record audio I will arm the track, press record in the transport window, and then press play. After I do this the stop button lights up and it says record-pause in the bottom left corner of the edit window. I quit pro-tools and open it back up, and everything seems to work out fine. Is there any reason for this at all?

124. ConnorSmith - March 30, 2009

@JBergdorf

Try this -
Does it go into pause if you use “Command+SpaceBar” or if you use “3″ (on the number pad) to trigger record?

125. JBergdorf - March 30, 2009

command+ spacebar opens up spotlight on my finder bar, but 3 records. I never knew about that little shortcut before.

Like I said, it doesn’t happen too often, just on occasion

126. ConnorSmith - April 1, 2009

@JBergdorf

In System Preferences > Spotlight you can disable the Command+Space trigger for spotlight. Then it will record in Pro Tools.

127. JBergdorf - April 2, 2009

Thank you, you made my life so much easier.

128. mike - April 3, 2009

Good morning author this is mike i have a quick question. i am currently mixing a song and i want to add a delay plug in on one of the tracks. the issue here is the track is panned slightly to the right by 4 and i dont know if the return aux has to be panned too. does the return aux have to be panned or can it stay in the middle. thanks in advance 4 your response ill be waiting to hear from you. enjoi your day take care and god bless

129. ConnorSmith - April 3, 2009

@Mike -

When you activate the aux send, there will be a pan pot in the window that pops up. That pot can be set to either Follow Main Panner (orange button) or you can set it independently. Assuming you have your return setup as I explain below, the pan pot there will control the stereo position of the effect (barring any oddities in what the effect plug-in is doing to the signal).

I would recommend just hard panning L and R (which is default) on the Aux track with the delay return. This will give you the ability to send sources to that aux with a variety of different pans and have them placed correctly across the whole stereo image.

130. mike - April 3, 2009

i think i understand what u r saying Aurthur. if i am getting u right, u r suggesting that i leave the return pan aux as it is(the default setting which is 100L, 100R). If this is so i would think i can do the same if i were to send the effect to a mono return aux, leave the pan setting at the center ,0 even if the track from which the effect is sent is panned.

131. Damon Sink - April 5, 2009

Mike,

The effect on the mono return will be centered, defeating any pan that you have set on the source track. I can’t remember the last time I instantiated a mono aux return, actually. Always stereo aux tracks.

132. Tim Kemp - April 6, 2009

Hi, I’ve been using ProTools (LE using an Mbox 2) for a long while now and have just upgraded to LE 8. Installation was fine and the program runs without crashing most of the time, however in playback during a mix session there is an intermittent hum/fuzz noise that sort of comes and goes throughout the track and never at the same points. Sometimes this leads to the DAE 6101 error. Didn’t have this problem in 7.3/7.4 at all. It does this on both new LE8 sessions and old 7.3/7.4 sessions. Downloaded cs2 update and not solved it.

Im using a MacBook Black 2.16ghz intel core 2 duo with 2gb of ram and 160gb hdd running osx 10.5.6. The Mbox is always plugged in to the front of the 2 USB ports as instructed by Digi. Also, to do some of my uni work i run Cubase using the Mbox as the interface and i dont have the noise issue with that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated =)!

Tim

133. ConnorSmith - April 6, 2009

@Tim

I haven’t heard of that one. Hmmm…
Let me ask around – I’ll get back to you, hopefully very soon.

134. Tim Kemp - April 6, 2009

Thanks, like i said…any help on this would be amazing!

135. joseph B. - April 6, 2009

I have a mac book 10.5.6 and i want to purchase an mbox 2 but it comes with Pro Tools Le 7 which is not compatible. i want to upgrade to pro tools 8 (which is compatible with my computer) but dont i need to install pro tools 7 first. How does this work if i wont be able to install pro tools 7 on my computer. So how can i get pro tools to work on my computer if i purchase an mbox?

136. ConnorSmith - April 6, 2009

@Joesphb
If you buy a new MBox now that was originally packaged with 7.4, you can register it on Digidesign.com to get a free amnesty upgrade email.

This is so they don’t have to rip open all the retail MBoxes that were made before version 8 was released.

137. Joseph B - April 7, 2009

thank you. do i have to install pro tools 7.4 before i upgrade free to 8?
becuase im not sure if my computer 10.5.6 mac will install version 7. dididesign only approved pro tools 8 with 10.5.6

138. JBergdorf - April 7, 2009

@ Joseph B

It will install 7.4, that is the configuration I have with my pro tools set up and it installed just fine.

139. Alex Lugo - April 7, 2009

hello ppl….. im back with a not so difficult question….( i think ) yet… can’t resolve the issue…… so….
im currently using pt 7.4.2 with the lataste update which is the cs3,
comp specs: mac, core 2 duo- 2.8 with 2 gb of ram on mac os x 10.5.6…. so….. i’ve always been able to work with pt 7.4 w/o any problems…. the thing is when i go to system prefs and select my mbox 2 mini as the main output for my system… it hangs and i have to reboot my computer manually, it really sucks… why does this happen? any advice?????? Hey guys, has anyone found anything to do with my problem yet? it’s really starting to annoy me. Is there a way where i can go back to 7.4 and get my money back from digi because i paid a lot of money for this upgrade and it is, to my ears, unusable.

My problem is at post 132, i’ve tried fiddling with the monitor connections and that hasn’t helped. The same noise comes directly out of the headphone port whether the monitor out is plugged in or not. Looked at the system usage as well today and the CPU doesn’t go above 40% and the disk doesn’t go above 6% usage. There is also no common numbers appearing when the noise appears.

I really don’t want to have to go back to 7.4 because the plug-ins included in 8 are great as are the Midi features.

Any advice?

141. Tim Kemp - April 9, 2009

another update, i’ve recorded some audio using my mbox and if the random fuzzy sound happens during recording it records it on to that track. This makes it present at the mixdown stage when you bounce it.

I have installed 10.5.6 and pro tools 8 on a mac pro1,1 2.66 ghz dual-core intel xeon 3gb ram. The application will only launch successfully after a restart. If I quit pro tools and try to relaunch it it will hang on start up. I have all plug ins in the unused folder, have deleted the digidesign databases off of mounted drives and trashed preferences. The problem continues. Does anyone have any ideas? I am installing these upgrades for a client and need to make this happen. thanks

145. Scott - April 12, 2009

I can’t bus to an aux or audio track in pro tools8.(I ve done it a thousand times on 7.3) The send output meter is working but no signal is going into new channel.

146. ConnorSmith - April 13, 2009

@mike

Did you trash your preferences/databases?

@Scott
Can you take a screenshot? You can email it to me (email is in the “About” tab up top)

147. Scott - April 14, 2009

I finally got it to work. It was a file from a previous 7.1 session and for some strange reason it didn’t let me bus. Not sure why. New recordings are working fine though. i guess it was a compatabilty problem. When i deleted the aux track/ bus and created a new one, then moved its position in the mix window it finally worked. It doesn’t tell you that in the manual.Ha

148. MH - April 14, 2009

im running an imac os x 10.5.6 and for some reason when i try to open pro tools 8 the applications quits unexpectedly. The only reason i bought the imac was because i recently purchased a digi 003. im getting so frustrated that i am ready to return my imac…please help

152. Rene Anton - April 29, 2009

Hey! Casey
read my post # 88 hopefully it will help. I had to hunt does plugins and removed them. before Protools gave a warning of no ilok , or demo mode etc. so it took me awhile to figure it was a plugin loading from the start. you can delete from the plugin folder to try and also check for incompatible third part plugins you can always test by putting them back in but if it’s a start up this is a good place to look.
hope this helps with my Two cents.
Cheers!

153. ConnorSmith - April 29, 2009

@ Casey

Did you trash your preferences/databases?
Did you do a clean install of PT8?
Do you have any third party plug-ins installed?
Also – please keep the same question on the same page (aka don’t ask it in two different threads). It makes it harder to keep track of answers/progress/etc.

Thanks

Hey Mike.

I know you have been communicating with Connor, but I’d also be happy to take a listen. Use Yousendit to send me a full wav and I’ll see what occurs to me to help your mix.

Yep. Use YouSendIt’s free sending (or something similar) to send Damon and/or I a wav file of your tune. We can offer some suggestions.

157. gsbe - May 13, 2009

There seems to be a problem with the soundmixer and surroundmixer plugins on the OSX install of PT 8. Take these out of the plugins folder as suggested on this thread and all seems well.

158. Scott Brady - May 21, 2009

I have the new mac pro 8 core 2.26 nahalem. Just wondering if it would be better to turn off hyperthreading or not. There seems to be much debate this. If i did turn it off, would it now out perform the harpertowns.( I know alot of people were buying the harpertowns because they where outperforming the nahalems. Any advive on this topic would be much appreciated as when i read other threads, nothing was definitive. Digidesign does not say anything about this topic either just that they are compatible.

159. ConnorSmith - May 21, 2009

I’m pretty sure from 7.0 on, PT has been compatible with hyperthreading, and that you should leave it on.

Are you having performance problems? With a computer that powerful, I wouldn’t think that you’d need to worry about it :)

I’ve never really researched/messed with hyperthreading. I’ve got a 3.2gHz harpertown from early 2008, and I haven’t been able to max it out.

160. Elvis Lopez - May 25, 2009

@Conor,

You were a great help to me before, so I decided to come back here for advice. I recently partioned my iMac, and added Windows XP to it. I then installed PT 7.4 on the windows side of my iMac, and I was able to pull up sessions and everything, but I have an issue importing audio. I then thought it was a 7.4 issue, so I installed my PT8. Things got worst. Now instead of the audio not playing, anytime i click on some audio that I want to import, Pro tools just shuts down immediately. I dont even get any notifications on why it did. It’s kind of wierd, i’ve never had this happen before. I have installed pro tools through bootcamp before with no issue’s, so maybe you can help me out here.

Thanks,
Elvis

168. ConnorSmith - June 7, 2009

To upgrade to 8, you need to do a clean install – uninstall 7.3 first and then install 8.

Also, even in its current state, did you trash your preferences/databases?

Let me know what happens when you try those.

Hello Mike…… i would recommend you to look for the presonus studio channel tube…. u get a tube pre with compressor and parametric EQ ..3 in 1 for 300 dlls so….. it’s not to expensive and works well, i personally own it and i has giving me good results, hope you find it useful, cheers!

Mike:

Here is a link to an ebay auction for a JoeMeek VC3:

This was the first outboard pre that I ever owned and I still think it’s pretty smokin. The post says it is a compressor, which means that dude don’t know what he’s talkin’ ’bout; but you can probably snag it for a good deal. I still have two of these that my students use.

Hi,
On my old Mac (Macbook) I could record fine with Protools LE 7.4. Now I’ve just updated to the new Macbook Pro- 10.5.7 and it won’t record. I just a bit fat band on the upper part of the recording area. Any ideas?
Thanks for any help

179. ConnorSmith - July 10, 2009

@Emma

It could be a number of things. First thing I would do is check the Digidesign.com compatibility pages. I don’t know if 7.4 is compatible with OSX10.5.7 – you may want to go to version 8.

Feel free to take a screenshot and send it to my email if this persists.

Hello, I am running 10.5.7 and PT 8 with a 002. I am running a dual 2.6 htz, 4 gigs. I am having a heck of a time with plugin/instrument tracks. I am using plugins like NI b4II and ez-drummer. By the time i load up a 4th or 5th track and use another type of plug in I get slapped with the ol cpu usage error. I did research on google try to figure it out.. changed my play back settings to one processor and 85% and etc… i download the cs update i think i was from jan 09 and it seemed to work ok for a day or so until i had a project going and bam.. PT 8 came unresponsive and lost all my work.. anyways any tricks on running about 5 instrument tracks with out crashes…i would love to use something like synth ivorys or NI pianos.. but i know my mac wouldnt handle it… unless they are a trick that i can do so i can run plugs. thanks for your help

181. lankyboy_90 - July 22, 2009

Hey guys, its been a while since i posted on here!

I am currently running PT8cs3 on my macbook black 2.16 core 2 duo, 2gb ddr2 667 Ram on OS 10.5.6 through an Mbox 2 and am having a couple of issues.

On my recording sessions with audio in, i get a crazy, intermittent digital distortion noise during playback and sometimes on tracks i have recorded too.

I have tried taking out plug-ins and that doesnt seem to make a difference and also i have changed the RTAS processor from 2 to 1 and my H/W buffer to 1024 because it also comes up with the “CPU overload error” even though the CPU load never exceeds 75% during playback on a single processor or 50% load on dual processors.

I have tried different USB leads, listening just through the headphones and not my speakers, changing the USB port my Mbox is plugged into and nothing seems to change it.

I can’t afford an external Firewire HDD and am using the Macbook’s internal HDD. I had no problems using this exact same configuration using PT 7.4.2cs2.

Any ideas?

182. lankyboy_90 - July 22, 2009

184. lankyboy_90 - July 22, 2009

185. Trg - July 24, 2009

Hey folks,
I finally have PT 8 installed after discovering that my M-Audio Fast track ultra 8r had a defective USB out. PT is working fine, except that when I try to open a filed created in 7.4, there’s no sound waves in the file. Read an earlier post that said the computer would have to redraw, but I don’t what command or process to use to accomplish this.
System is PT 8, interfaces as described, MacBook (non-pro) and OS X 10.5.7. Latest drivers for M-Audio box.
Help, please.

186. mrmecanique - August 16, 2009

Hi everybody,

Quite the same problems here with Protools 8cs3 on Macs (intel and G5). I recorded 14 songs with 28 tracks of drums I NEED to be beat detectived by tuesday. The noises are appearing randomly in the songs. Some songs get “infected” some not, but I can’t trust anything because a song that was clean yesterday just got some burst today. It’s been 3 days of work for nothing. Is Digidesign gonna communicate on that???

Well, the problem’s description is that randomly, some kind of full scale sinus signal appears in the recordings (you can’t miss it…). Not while recording, but after, when reopening the session one month after. These noises appears in different tracks. If I zoom out, I can see the “normal” wave. If I do zoom in, I can see the Burst/0dBFS sinus on the “infected” track. If I click on “recalculate waveform” on that section, then the burst/sinus appears at any zoom… On some songs, I haven’t done anything since the recording. And I repeat, during the recording, everything was fine. It is REALLY annoying, I’m loosing something like 700$ a day with that shit! And this noise is REALLY loud. I can’t imagine recording a musician anymore before this problem is gone, because loud monitoring has now become dangerous. Is that something we can expect from a “professional” software? Digidesign, any suggestion? Any refund (hahaha)? Shall we go back to cutting tapes?

Thanx anyone for any idea, help, comments.

187. Tim - August 17, 2009

I have come to the reasoning that it is not going to be worth it for me to get PT 8 for my system from hearing all the probs that I have read on this website.
PT 7.4 is just fine from what I see.

188. John Rivers - August 19, 2009

Tim

Don’t give up hope on PT8. I had terrible problems when first instaling it but after retro instaling 10.5.4 instead of 10.5.5, and doing a clean install, (make sure all pref’s are burnt and also Digi Databases ON ALL DRIVES!),it was fine. Also be sure to set recording drives to private away from the prying eyes of Spotlight and turn off Time machine. I’ve been running it professionaly now since late Febuary and it is brilliant – much better than PT7. cs3 seems more stable….remember, if you get prob’s; trash prefs and digi databses and make sure your permisions are good.
Good luck

Hi Everyone

I have problems knowin wen to add delay to my mix. Just finished recordin instrumental 4 my song(5 tracks: kick, snare, bass, panned tamborine, melody and a slightly panned synth sound). As far as am concerned it sounds pretty tight already. However because most tracks nowadays need effect I think I might have to add at sum point. Wuz wondering if u can suggest to me a way I can use delay without loosing the feel of the track and without overusing it. Basically scared of slowin down the tempo?( Note. This song has a pop feel and the bass drives the song.)

another question. Am considering using a flanger effect on my vocals. backup or lead haven’t decided yet however wuz wonderingif u can suggest the best way to do this without causing phase cancellation, I.e do I just put it on the track or do I use an aux. Any help is appreciated.

Feature transfer error
Feature: Application files

error:the request could not be completed because of an i o error.

I have checked the control panal and the mbox mini is working fine and is recognised. please help, pete

200. ConnorSmith - October 29, 2009

@Ryan
I’ve never heard of that one before, but I suspect its some bug involved in the transfer between versions. I would check duc.digidesign.com for anyone else having the same problem, but I’d say there’s at least a decent chance you are going to have to copy your plug-ins over manually

@matt
Stereo plug-ins are stereo, multi-mono uses multiple mono instances (so, two mono plugs – one for each side of stereo). This is normal (i.e. with the EQ), but with other devices (such as a compressor), you’d want to use a stereo plug. I can elaborate more on this if anyone would like.

@Matt
I am going to need more info about your rig and your install procedure – check this post
http://thestudiofiles.com/?p=848

@Miro
In Disk Utility (Mac side), you can format the disk to NTFS (The drop down menu has an option for “Windows NT File System”)

201. Randy - November 11, 2009

PT 8 Mbox on Windows: I lost sound output. Meters show levels, but no output. It was working fine and went out suddenly. I can still hear input sounds on speakers or headphones, but no output from previously recorded music files. I loaded some previous projects, but have the same problem…no output from the Mbox. All Windows sounds work normally. Speakers work when unplugged from Mbox and hooked to other sound sources.

Anyone have any ideas??

202. ConnorSmith - November 12, 2009

@Randy

Hmm… That’s a new one. What happens if you make a new session, import a stereo audio file (say a song from a CD), and try to play it back?

I would also trash your Pro Tools preferences.

Also, feel free to take screenshots (perhaps of the mixer and also I/O Connections window) and send them to my email (listed above in the “Who We Are” tab).

203. Randy - November 12, 2009

Ok, I’ll try that when I am at the computer later. I went through all of the I/O tabs and set them to default. I’ve tried new and old sessions, audio imports, etc. It’s as if the preamp in the Mbox is bad. Actually, if I crank the volume all the way up, I can faintly hear all the tracks. The computer only has PT 8 on it, and is not connected to the internet.

204. ConnorSmith - November 13, 2009

@Randy

Yeah let me know if that works. Is it still the case that you can hear incoming sounds (while being recorded), but can’t hear anything on playback?

Also – if you are using an MBox 1 (first generation), have you played with the knob on the front that mixes between incoming and outgoing signal?

205. Charles B. - November 25, 2009

Hi Conner Smith

I first want to acknowledge your steadfast commitment to helping the pro-tools community. It, to me, is quite noble.

I have a Nehalem Mac Pro 10.5.6 OS and I am having very similar problems as the posters earlier this year… You guesssed it “pro-tools quit unexpectedly” (I should design A T-Shirt that says that) I have done the trash the protools prefs, pram, un-install both os and protools. I have not tried the plug-ins removal yet for the re-wire but I will try today. I just dont think that that will work. I tried absolutely everything else. Is it possible to downgrade to 10.5.5?

206. Charles B. - November 25, 2009

Oh I have the xeon processor that comes with the Nehalem 3 gigs. Just really mad becuase the machine is sooo super expensive and it does not seem to be compatible with this also super expensive software. Which is designed by a company that pretty much endorses whole heartedly this so super expensive machine.

207. Charles B. - November 25, 2009

…Uuuh, super expensive. Oh,I mean, are there any mentionings of a more compatible update to 10.5.6? Y’know…Something a little more on the lines of plug and play because the software is FULLY AND COMPLETELY DEVELOPED AS YOU WOULD EXPECT AFTER YOU PAY A LOT of YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY?? And less the kinda “do it yourself software calibration… for those who are dying to know the responsibility of fine tuning our products for us”??

I mean im just saying that would be great…

208. matt - November 27, 2009

Happy hollidays to everyone on this site. I pray that the good Lord continues to add more to what we already know about pro tools, all editing softwares and our musical talents. On another note I will like to thank Mr connor specially for his wisdom and the grace he has to share and be generous. Your well shall never run dry sir, I am grateful.

I am also trying to shoot a lil video for my new demo single, i was wondering if anyone here might be able to recommend any good HD camera, prefferably inexpensive, handy and crystal clear, kinda like a diamond in the rough. all suggestions are welcome.

is there any setting or preperations i need to do?

210. Justize - November 30, 2009

” WARNING
loss of plug-in authrorization keys may ocur… ETC”

Is This The Thing Thats Wrong, and if it are then how should i fix it?

211. ConnorSmith - November 30, 2009

@Charles
What version of Pro tools are you using?

@Justize
When that error message happens, can you take a screenshot of it and email it to me?

For your recording problem – I need some more info: What interface are you using? How are you monitoring (what are your headphones plugged into)? Do you see level in the metering in the DAW?

212. Tim - December 3, 2009

I’m running PT8 on an HD5 system. I was restarting PT when someone pulled my ilok out. I closed and restarted again with the ilok but now none of my waves plugins will pull up in my sessions. PT starts up fine and all the plugins are in the waves folder.

213. ConnorSmith - December 3, 2009

@Tim
Have you trashed you PT preferences and databases? I bet that will do it. Let us know if that doesn’t work.

214. Charles B. - December 3, 2009

Oh im using pt8

215. Tim - December 3, 2009

No the waveshell got moved to the unused plugins folder. I had to move it back to the plugins folder and then it worked. Thanks though.

216. Justize - December 4, 2009

i fixed it, but suprisingly as it seems. lol another problem came up!

“DAE error – 1115 was encoutered”

and then it shuts down the program.

What do i do now?

217. ConnorSmith - December 5, 2009

@Tim
Good – glad your setup is running smoothly

@Justize
Have you trashed your preferences and databases?

218. Brandon L - December 7, 2009

im having a issue with my PT8 whilie its loading up everything is fine until it gets to the plug ins and when it gets to XPAND!.dpm it freezes and doesnt respond anymore what can i do to fix this?

219. matt - December 7, 2009

hi brandon i encounter a similar problem on my i mac with PT 7.4 the only difference is mine stops at pheripherals(very often). what i do then is to force quit pro tools by clicking on the apple icon on the upper left hand side of the screen. after i do this i then relaunch PT again. hope this helps. takia and best of luck.

220. ConnorSmith - December 8, 2009

@Brandon

Its probably one of a few things (in this order) –

1) It could be just a matter of trashing your prefs/databases
2) It could be a Rewire thing. Drag your ReWire plug out of the plug-ins folder
3) It could be incompatible third party plug-ins. Do you have any third party plugs installed?

@matt
Sometimes this happens when you leave your computer/interface on for an extended period of time while you aren’t using it. What interface are you using, and do you leave it on typically?

221. Brandon L - December 8, 2009

well i got 2 interfaces im using m-audio fast track for when im using reasons and my mbox 2 mini for protools i always have 1 of them unplug if im using the other , plus i do leave the interface on maybe thats the issue ill try to leave it off for now and see if it works.

thanks

222. ConnorSmith - December 8, 2009

@ Brandon
(The part of my last post was actually aimed at Matt, but if it helps you, then good)
Is there a reason why you don’t use one interface the whole time?

223. Brandon L - December 8, 2009

well for some reason i cant get my mbox to be my default audio device for my laptop so i use the fast track to connect my monitors so i could get sound

224. CosmicKid - December 16, 2009

Hello! Out of the blue I’m getting the “access violation” upon opening a session. After several attempts – reboots – trashing preferences etc – it will let me load the session and then give me the “access violation” right after I bounce to disk (and it never saves the bounced file). This rig has worked flawlessly for years. I have read where waves plug-ins can cause this, but why would this happen two years after I installed them? any help would be awesome…i’m at a loss here! Thank you in advance

Pro Tools 7 LE, digi002, windows XP, core2duo 3ghz/3gRam.

225. ConnorSmith - December 16, 2009

@CosmicKid

Is it only happening with this session?

If so, I would make a new session, and File>Import>Session Data (thus creating a new version of essentially the same project file), and see if that works.

If it is happening across the board, let me know and we can try to solve that.

226. mitchell - December 17, 2009

Hi, I am using Pro Tools 8 Le on my macbook pro. version 10.5.8

it loads plugins, effects, and when it gets to “loading surround mixer” it crashes and says quit unexpectedly, i am using a digi 002 and it has no problems. is it my os x version? im not using leopard.

thanks

227. CosmicKid - December 17, 2009

Connor – thanks for the quick response. I just imported the session files to a new session – right after getting through the entire song during bounce (when the numbers normally crunch at the end…) i’m still getting the “cannot perform the action due to a n access violation” error – click OK and a smaller window comes up saying “acces violation” and everything freezes and or crashes (leaving Reason open). I attempted bounces on other session without any problems. I’m baffled. And as always – one of the most important tracks i’m currently working on ;-(

Thank you in advance!

228. ConnorSmith - December 18, 2009

@mitchell

Are you using the complete production toolkit?
Have you tried trashing preferences and databases?
Do you have any third party plug-ins installed?

@CosmicKid
Hmmm…. That is a tricky one. Have you tried opening any of the past versions of the session that are automatically saved in the “Session Backup Files” folder?

Another (longer and more tedious) option is to open the session, highlight all the audio, hit alt+shift+3 to consolidate the audio files, then search on your drive to the audio files folder, and drag those into a new session.

229. Chuck Eddy - December 21, 2009

Hi,

I’ve been using the PT 8.0.1 and the Digi 003 Rack. My computer is Mac OX 10.5.8. It worked fine for the first couple months but then I began to get the “unable to locate digidesign hardware” message with increasing frequency, to the point that now I only get that message and am hence unable to use Pro Tools at all!

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have tried virtually EVERYTHING I have read on the Avid website and user forums.

Thanks,

Chuck Eddy

230. ConnorSmith - December 21, 2009

@Chuck

Have you trashed your preferences?
How long is your firewire cable? Sometimes switching to a shorter one can help.
If you power cycle your 003R after you get the message, does it fix it?

(Also, just to double check, you are using a 003R, not a 002R right? If its a 002R, its likely a power harness problem).

231. CosmicKid - December 21, 2009

Connor -

I’m using the Waves Mercury bundle. I have tried opening backup files and they do the same thing (sometimes throwing the acces violation when the session first opens – then crashing altogether). This weekend I realized that I had neglected to delete the entire DAE Prefs folder – after doing so I was able to load the track and finally bounce it to disk! And then I attempted to add a track to the session and immediately get the access violation and crash! My system was custom built by a developer of the Sweetwater Creation Station machines (and has worked flawlessly from day 1). I’m still baffled.

232. ConnorSmith - December 21, 2009

I’d move all third party plug-ins out of the plug-ins folder, trash preferences and databases, and then see what happens.

Wow – $5000 worth of plug-ins with a $1500 interface? I probably would have allocated my investment differently. What sort of front-end (preamps/outboard) are you running?

233. CosmicKid - December 21, 2009

Well, when you live 10 mins from the world’s largest audio software retailer (and hang out with people that work there) you’re bound to get a freebie here and there ;-) I am on a limited budget though. My next big purchase is preamps. Any suggestion on a “bang for the buck” preamp?

Back to my problem…when I move the plug-ins they will just show up as inactive when I re-open the session?

234. ConnorSmith - December 21, 2009

Right – moving all non-Digi plug-ins away will help to diagnose. I’m trying to get to the bottom of what is causing the weird errors.

You must live near Ft. Wayne?? :)

235. CosmicKid - December 21, 2009

Ah yes…Ft. Waste as we like to call it. Anyway, I will try to move the plugins and see what happens. I will let you know.

running protools 8 on vista sp2. no problems previously… not all of the sudden PT will load any session but crashes / freezes as soon as playback is initiated.

any ideas?

I tried cs updates, re-installs, disconnecting internet, disabling ie8, removing ie 8… my interface m-audio fw solo is still working properly in all other applications and it previews in PT.

thanks,
bert

241. ConnorSmith - January 2, 2010

@Sonny
Have you trashed your preferences/databases?

@Ken
Vista Home edition is usually a nightmare for Pro Tools compatibility. Unfortunately I’m going to have to punt – I think you should scour the Digidesign.com site for compatibility. It could be that your processor or firewire chipset is incompatible, or it could still be just a Vista/PT incompatibility. I would email Digidesign rather than call. Emailing is always free, and they are usually quick to respond. Be sure to include ALL your system information (all your computer specs, specific versions of software, etc.)

@bert

Hello,
I’m having problem with the score editor, when I right click a midi region and select “open in score editor” it opens the score editor window but there’s nothing, no music notation, it’s just gray. What could be the problem?

243. ConnorSmith - January 8, 2010

@Gianisonfire
Can you take a screen shot or a screen capture video and send it to my email (available in the “Who We Are” tab above).

I’m having some problems with pro tools 8 and my macbook with a mbox2. I installed the 8.0.1 update and now when I try yo open it, it says it quits unexpectedly. Then, when I run the uninstaller, it does nothing when pressing uninstall. Is there another way for uninstalling it?

246. Mike M - January 13, 2010

Hello All!

I am running Pro Tools 8.0 with an Mbox 2 Pro on a PPC G5 Dual 2.7 Ghz, OS 10.5.8, 4GB DDR SDRAM. Hopefully noone has already posted this question and I missed it. I recently added Drumagog Platinum and BFD2 to my system, they work fine when added to a session, but, after closing the session, I can not re open it. It will load upto the point where it shows

“Restoring Tracks…
Activating inserts: Kick In”

at that point I have to force quit Pro tools. all other sessions work fine. I AM able to create a new session and Import session data, but I have to leave out the instrument track that has BFD2 on the insert, which leads me to believe it is an issue of some sort with BFD2 and not Drumagog. Upon inserting BFD2 on a new instrument track in the new session, again, everything works fine, until I close it and try to re open the session and the problem is back again. I have not come across anything yet on their forums but was wondering if anyone here has had an issue with this, and hopefully has found a solution? I have tryed trashing the preferences, but no change.

Thank you very much for your time!

247. Brendan - January 25, 2010

Im running pro tools 8 on windows 7 everything works fine besides that when im bouncin a song to disk it shows the time remainin box its plays fine for 3 secs then the time stops but the song keeps playing and it bounces fine but id rather see how much time is left while the song is playin/bouncin throughout

248. Ras T - February 2, 2010

I bought Pro ToolsLE8.3 from Sweetwater.com to use on my Mac Book Pro OS X 10.6.2 and nothing works!! First of all Mac Book Pro has only 1 FireWire port, thus I have to connect via the Glyph hard drive. This makes the system limp along “halfass.” The latest problem is an error report, “DAE error-9060/9035″ which flashes and prevent playback of certain session tracks. First I was told I need an update, then that my connection (which I complied with the DigiDesign manual pg. 10) is faulty. What’s up, should I return the goods???

249. jonathan - February 9, 2010

Hi I just bought pt8 and during my installation on my pc I keep getting “feature transfer error” then it says something about a cyclic redundancy check. Please help trying to record so badly

250. Ras T - February 9, 2010

Well, I’m still just “limping” along, but still haven’t accomplished what I bought ProTools to do. Still merely trying to play back tracks from Live recordings from Summer and Fall. Seems like NOBODY in America knows what “DAE error-1060/1035″ mean or where one can acquire a list of these error report numbers and what they represent, in order to figure out what the hell went wrong and where. SAD, SAD, SAD !!

251. JBergdorf - February 9, 2010

This error can occur when the hard drive being used for audio is near capacity.

Backup and reinitialize the drive, free up some space and defragment the drive, or use another hard drive instead.

You may be able to obtain temporary relief by going to Setup>Preferences>Operation and limiting the open-ended record allocation preference to 30 minutes or less.

This is what I got when I searched the Digidesign database

252. Frank - February 10, 2010

Hey guys Question

So I have a macbook with pro tools 8. Anyway everytime I try record my guitar or voice the levels goes up unexpectedly. The input is also turned all the way down so Im not sure where this gain is coming from. I mean i plug everything in. I have my audio mono track. I can hear it clear and loud through my headphones. Then as soon as a record enable the track the level just shoots from zero to clipping. Yesterday I tried again and it worked but thats the only time its worked for me. Then today I went to try again and the levels went crazy again

253. Frank - February 10, 2010

Ok so I managed to fix the problem. I had to restart the computer. Weird

254. ConnorSmith - February 15, 2010

@Fabrizio and Cody
Try trashing your Pro Tools preferences and databases and try again. Also Cody – if things are working just fine on your system now, I wouldn’t worry about updating. Rule of thumb – if things work, don’t change them until you absolutely have to.

@Mike M
Its likely a compatibility problem between BFD and PT. I would go to BFD’s site as well as Digidesign’s site to see if there are any new updates that address the problem. With Pro Tools, its very important to check specific version compatibilities before purchasing new software.

@Brendan
That sounds like a very specific bug. Are you using the latest Windows 7 compatibility version of PT?

@RasT
If you have checked Digidesign.com’s compatibility list to make sure your software/OS/hardware are totally compatible, then I would email Digi tech support directly (or go through Sweetwater) with as much detail about the situation as possible.

@jonathan
You need to give us more information about your system.

@frank
Try trashing preferences as well if it comes back. Also check to make sure all aspects of your system are compatible (Digidesign.com)

255. Brendan - February 20, 2010

yea i fixed it i had to download the windows seven software from digi design

I have a question about protools regions and the edits I make in the regions. Once I edit a region and grab the entire file and drag it to another track, my edits change. They move to other areas in the region and uncover previous recordings. Is there a setting that I am missing so I can avoid this issue?

Also does any one know how to designate markers so i can make a “go back” marker that I can put anywhere in the session and return to it? How can I program some quick keys?

Hi
I run PT 8.03 on my Pc windows xp sp2.with amd Phenom 4 core and 3 gb ram
usually we work in audio recordings with no problems.
But a few days later we start a postpro job with a .mov (quicktime movie)
and when we try to move or edit some wavefile or simply start playing
this message appears:

“Access violation ocurred, unable to write location 0s4007AF64 at adress 0×871AA4FF in module Quicktime.qts”
We try all, reinstall different versions of quicktime, update protool (we start with pt 8, next 8.1 and now 8.3) without any solution.

Can you help us guys.
excuse my bad english!
Thanx

260. crimsonphoenix - March 12, 2010

I’m having a problem with my protools 8. I’m running it on a Mac. We recorded vocals a few months ago and when we opened the file a day ago all the instrument tracks where present, the vocal track was technically there, in other words the boxes where the vocals used to be where there, it says it’s a wav file but there are no vocals. We don’t know what happened, they were never erased. Help please! We really don’t want to have to redo the vocals. What I find odd is that the vocal field is there, the boxes are there yet they’re empty, you can’t see the wav. Please help!!

IM having a major issue with Pro Tools 8.0.3 on snow leopard. I have 22 brand new imac intel core i5 quads with 8 gigs of ram each. Pro Tools LE has been installed, reinstalled several times now. Each of these machines has an Mbox2 attached to it. Pro Tools sees a micro and opens on all stations if I unplug the mbox, but as soon as you plug in the mbox, it freezes just after PT bootup. It shows the PT menus, but just gives you the spinning ball of death. If you pull the mbox it boots up immediately but of course then says cant find hardware etc. I have trashed prefs from inside to outside, I have reinstalled, Something is not liking the mbox2 for some reason and they all have the most current firmware. ugh…any ideas here?

Im running Pro Tools 8 m-powered with M-Audio FastTrack Ultra 8R on a more than capable stipped laptop desgned for audio production. However im experiencing the odd glitch every now and again. Sometimes it happens not at all, can help sometimes restarting computer or software but can also make it worse. Could it have anything to do with using a better USB lead? only using the crappy one i got with the fasttrack at the moment. Possibly an externally powered USB hub to reduce motherboard noise? Could it be spikes in the mains supply? Any advice would be much appreciated. As I said computer has plenty of power and changing sample rates ect has no bearing on the problem. Can only think it is electrical interference? Thanks

267. chris cash - April 23, 2010

I cannot click anything within the pro tools program. I can’t even quit the program everything is grayed out. I can use a couple of keyboard shortcuts to start and stop the audio but thats all. I have recently installed WAVES and I found at least one person with a similar problem after installing WAVES. Anyways I installed CS2 for 8.0.3 and the problem went away for the day until the next day when I started PT the problem was back. Totally Uninspiring!!!! Please help.

In OS 10.5, I when I repair permissions, I get lot’s of ACL errors. I never got these in OS 10.4. Does this only happen in OS 10.5?

I just bought PT8LE for my Mac Pro, but I am wondering what would be the stablest Mac OS to use? Or should I stay with PT 7.4? Someone on this board has actually has used PT8 with OS 10.5.4, which DD hasn’t authorized; anyone else do this?

271. Rene Anton - June 3, 2010

Don’t know if it only happens in osx10.5. but along with running permissions try downloading ACLr8 a osx software that removes ACL errors it worked for me. i am running protools 8 on osx 10.5.8 PPC . i have also updated protools 8.0.1cs2 for ppc released in the beginning of may posted on the avid/ digidesign website . They said they were no longer supporting but this is an update to correct errors which is cool of them to do hope it helps! cheers!

Before doing anything try downloading this app its free don’t know what url it is but its named (Delete Digi Databases folders! ) you can do it manually but i find this is the easiest. The first thing to do is this since for some reason this folders get currupt! after you run or delete , run protools once again this folder come up again just cleaned i guess, but a lot of times its just this the other things i would do is run permissions/ also check on there system preferences / Accounts check if there is any login items that should not be there and my be running while you are running protools / turn off Airport/ and any Bluetooth etc. hope this helps!

I keep getting a -50 error message, which I’m told is is drive related. I own a G tech G Drive 500GB, which contains an Oxford 944 (I found out Pro Tools is compatible only with 911 and 924). I basically got raped by G Tech because they claim their hard drives are compatible with Pro Tools and they are NOT! Now I’m looking into the Glyph GT050Q, because I have run out of options.

My question is how can I make sure I’m getting the right hard drive that I need with out getting fucked over again?

How can I be sure that the Glyph actually is compatible and that the company isn’t just false advertising like G Tech?

Setup Overview:
- Macbook Pro 13″ 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB RAM (10.5.8)
- M-Powered Pro Tools (8.0.4)
- M-Audio Firewire Audiophile (1.9.3)

Thanks!

I finished recording/mixing a song yesterdy. saved it to be opened again for vocals today and now while it’s loading the audio files it stops with an error that says “cannot open session because access violation. Unable to read location” there’s alittle bit more but that’s the most of it. Any fix? Or ideas on a fix? And there are no session backups for this song. I’m running windows 7 with m audio profire 2626 interface.

Help! I’ve got Mbox 2 Pro and I was running it on a PC with Vista and had loads of problems, never got anything done. I just recently got a Mac G5 with OS 10.5.8, I believe this is what you call a PPC. Anyway after calling and paying for tech support I finally got it loaded, after all is said and done I’m getting an error -6101. Can anyone help this poor soul out, got PT for Christmas and haven’t done one damn thing with it.

Frustrated

Annoyed… have a new laptop HP DV7 (i7, 8G Ram) with Win7 – keep getting various error messages relating to when I use MIDI… RTAS meter gets up to about 25% when crashing.. some errors include -6085, -9128… I adjust one thing in playback engine and another error pops up in playback – the darn thing has 8 virtual processors and 4G of free RAM when crashing? Why, when MIDI (I have exported to a MIDI file) uses like 10k for what I am doing?

PS:::

Crashing with like 2 audio and 3 MIDI (Instrument tracks) using expand and boom plug ins.. boom seems to use more RTAS … about 3 minutes of song with cut and paste loops of midi..

HI I had a quick question on Pro tools le 8 cs3. I am trying to use the virtual instruments such as boom, grand piano, xpand, etc that come with the pro tools creative collection,but when I go to bring them up in the insert column I cant find them. I’ve even went and got the vst to rtas adapter to find all vst on my computer but to no avail. I do remember when I 1st installed pro tools on my comp. I had to do something with the plug-ins folder due to it freezing at the load up screen, Well I the advice of the fix, and it successfully worked, but now that I have grown in my usage of pro tools and want to utilize plug-ins. They are no where to be found. I see that in my digidesign folder (c:\program files\digidesign) the plug-ins are available in the creative collections folder, but once it comes to real usage of them, its a no go. I would appreciate if you could explain to me, 1st the normal procedure of using virtual instruments in PT sessions. 2ndly, If by moving the creative folder through the fix I followed during my pro tools load up freeze, could I have moved it from its normal location. I am a new user to the pro tools line and it could be a very simple answer to this question. I also remember all the glitches and installation obstacles I’ve had to overcome just to get my Pt 8 up and running so one more obstacle wouldn’t be far fetched! I’m running PT 8 on Xp sp3 4g Ram 2.8 ghz. I new to using threads too, so if I wasn’t detailed in explaining the problem excuse me. Any help would be greatly appreciated, let me know if you need more info on the prob.

Hi!

Im using PT8.03 / Mbox2 on a HP HPE-330sc Pavilion Elite:

CPU: Intel Core i7
Chipset: Intel PCH 2
RAM-type DDR3
RAM (MB) 6 144
OS: Win7 64bit

When I start PT, I get a DAE error 1115. After reading up on several forums, I’ve entered BIOS and turned off firewire and network card, and I’ve switched off IE8 (though not uninstalled it as of yet). Can any1 pls point me in ANY direction to get this solved?
