Alesis broke very serious new ground in project studio recording with the release of the original “blackface” ADAT recorders back in the 90′s. Many digital audio interfaces (like the MOTU 2408) include one or more banks of ADAT optical I/O. I used to use ADAT (20 bit) to accomplish location classical recordings. The A/D on my ADAT XT20 was quite stellar. Now I have two outboard PCs that send sample library audio back to my DAW via ADAT lightpipe.
