Loved by many, despised by some… regardless of where you stand, mp3 is hugely important in the proliferation of internet music. It is the original method of delivering compressed audio (mainly over the internet).
What does MP3 stand for? How does it compress? Why is it “good”? Why is it “bad”? Let’s dive in… (more…)

Ah…. the internet. One of the greatest inventions of our time, not only for information technology… but also for (you guessed it) the audio industry!
The internet has allowed us to turn the music market upside-down. With CD sales on the fall and internet music on the rise, a substantial need for good-sounding compression formats has arisen. But how do these compression codecs actually do what they do? Why do some sound better than others? Why do some sound like… well… bad? We’ll explore this over the series of articles. (more…)

Why YOU should have a YouSendIt account August 13, 2008
Posted by ConnorSmith in : Chit Chat, Project Studio, Troubleshooting , 3commentsI’ve been getting a lot of emails asking how to transfer songs, sessions, and OMF files between computers and/or studios. Now, I’ve talked about this before, but I’d like to hit on it again, as I believe it is such an awesome tool for people in this field.

Posted by PJ in : Chit Chat, GarageBand , 7commentsGarageBand ’08 added some great new features to the platform – full automation, multi-take recording, visual EQ, a real compressor, notation printing and a whole lot more. First off, thanks a bunch for all the great discussions and input (and the traffic) you’ve given The Studio Files. This community doesn’t happen without everyone’s contributions.
I’ve been getting a lot of emails lately, and I find that often I need to send 1-2 back and forth before actually getting to the “help” part. We like to answer everyone’s questions and fix as many problems as we possibly can to get us all making music as fast as humanly possible. Here are some things you can include in your questions that will help for an even faster response (and hopefully a solution!). : (more…)

Keep your ears healthy! February 2, 2008
Posted by ConnorSmith in : Chit Chat, Digital home recording studios , 2commentsPlenty of us, myself included, spend a lot of time talking about gear.
“What’s the best setting for the new Soundmaster5603aZ4 compressor????”
“How many terrabytes of RAM do I get for my new 28-core computer????”
One thing to remember is this: without healthy ears, all of that gear talk is useless. So what are some things you can do to keep them healthy and happy? I’ll list a few suggestions here.
